I’m not going to summarize the plot, or say much about the book per se, except that it’s very different, interesting and entertaining, with a lot of surprises. Well written, too. I highly recommend it. I didn’t find it earthshaking or numinous; it’s not 2001 or anything, but a lot of fun.
I enjoyed it, despite its length. Got tired of it for a minute after it had already gone on for a very long time and was still far from over, but then I got my second wind. If I enjoyed it that much, and it doesn't have major flaws, it gets five stars.
I have one major quibble, something I find objectionable but a lot of people probably wouldn't even notice, and I'm not going to mark it down for that.

I just looked at some of the 1-star reviews, and they say it's slow, boring, predictable, and amateurishly written. I strongly disagree with the accusation that it's predictable. Slow, yes. Boring, not to me, but if you're looking for action, yeah, probably so. The writing, I think it's pretty good.

It’s about aliens, or is it? It’s also a lot about politics, PR, stuff like that, and for a wonder, the way people act is not specially implausible. In fact, not nearly as implausible as recent actual events. (Sigh).
    Check it out.

I got it for free, via BookBub. A lot of the self-published novels on BookBub are terrible, so I always “look inside” on Amazon first, maybe check the 1-star reviews, and usually end up not downloading them, but this one grabbed me right away.

I just have a few quibbles. On these unedited self-published books, people often complain about typos. Generally, there are almost no such errors in this book, but for some reason, there are several instances of a plural noun with an apostrophe, like “the brother’s”. Not a possessive or a contraction, just a plural with a mysterious alien apostrophe. Weird.
I know no one knows where apostrophes are supposed to go, or what they’re for, and we should just get rid of them, but I haven’t seen this particular mistake before. Never mind. Not important.

The author is British, and at least 90% of the dialog in the book is spoken by Americans. It doesn’t bother me that the authorial voice, the omniscient narrator, speaks British English, even though 90% of the book takes place in the US. I’m not even talking about how they spell “colour” or “programme”; that’s understood, but the authorial voice uses Britishisms. Not too blatant, not a problem. At least he doesn’t do strange things with commas.

Well, there’s one time where the narrator says someone speaks with a “North London accent”, that struck me a little oddly. Like the vast majority of Americans, I wouldn’t know a North London accent from second base, or should I say “a Yorker into the wicket”? It is the omniscient narrator, so (s)he could be allowed to know that, I guess, but it sounds weird to me. Never mind.

Actually, there are several comments about accents, and I guess Brits are keenly aware of these things, but Americans can’t tell Australian from Manchester. We hardly even have, or have awareness of, our own regional accents.
In fact, there’s a line in the book about someone having a “strong California accent”— that’s oxymoronic. California, and the West Coast generally, is as close to a neutral American accent as it gets. There is something called Valley Girl talk, but it’s not really a regional accent, and grown-up professional women don’t talk that way.

What does bother me, and where this book really could have used an editor, is that the Americans speak British English! (Even if pronounced with a “strong California accent”).
It’s fairly subtle; the author is probably unaware of it. I doubt if I could write convincing dialog for Brits without some Americanisms creeping in, possibly things I don’t even know are Americanisms, but if you’re going to write a whole bookful of dialog (“dialogue” to you) supposedly spoken by Americans, maybe run it by an American?
Here’s what I mean: various American characters say things like:
    —“will I bring the computer?”
(An American would say “shall I” or “should I” or “Want me to?”, but never “will I?”.
—“We’ll go back to ours”. (American: “our place”)
—“The firm have insisted”— no, the firm is an it. IT insisted. “My bosses at the firm insisted”, fine, but the firm has to be singular. We’d never say “Los Angeles have won their last three games on the road”; the “Lakers have won”, yes, but it has to be “Los Angeles has”.
—“It sounds a lot, but…” Americans say “it sounds LIKE a lot”.
—people are “keen” to do things. Americans would say “eager”, “anxious”, “hot”, “dying to”, or more likely just “they want to”, but never “keen”. If we ever use the word “keen” it would be like saying “coool!”.
—one character jumps in the car and tells the driver to “reverse!” and get the hell out of there.
    Americans would say “Back up!”

Actually it got to be kind of fun spotting all these things, but I think convincing American dialog would have worked better for suspension of disbelief.
Anyway, it’s a fun read, if a little long, and I recommend it.

This was a book worth reading, if for no other reason than it is really an original and unlike just about anything you'll find out there in SciFi. That being said, I do have to list a few irritations I had that wouldn't allow me to give the book five stars.

First, it's too long by at least 100 pages. The author obviously self-published the book; and while I totally support writers being able to publish their own material, the weakness in the process usually is seen in editing. This book needed a stern disciplinarian for an editor to force the author to cut, trim, and burn out the excess fat. Authors fall in love with their own words and feel like they have to include every little detail... and that was the case here. The first 50% of the book (I know because I read it on Kindle) was so superfluous in detail that it's all I could do to wade through the minutiae. To Mr. Falconer... get an editor, please!

Second, while the book is set largely in the US, with a US cast of politicians, institutions and media, these institutions and processes are not American in style at all. This was a real distraction for me. Falconer has imposed the British media culture, political culture and processes on US institutions. All through the book I kept saying to myself, "that would never happen that way in the US..." in regard to the President, her "PR" advisor and the media outlets that all look like Rupert Murdoch British outlets, not CNN, Fox or MSNBC, I just couldn't buy what the author was selling.. Really, what US president would ever allow a government department head (under the authority of the executive branch) to publicly badmouth and name call POTUS on camera to the media? I don't care who the President is, was, or is going to be in the future - from Washington all the way up to Obama, strong Republican or weak Democrat - that agency head would be gone - fired - in a millisecond. If MacArthur couldn't get away with it, I can guarantee that Mr. Walker wouldn't either. I just couldn't buy the storyline of a president fearful of offending a career bureaucrat. This would have felt more plausible if the whole story were set in Jolly Old England.

Third, (a bit of a spoiler alert here!) alien craft and cornfields? Really? Of all the places to land a spaceship, why a cornfield? What is the deal with that? If I was trying to keep myself hidden so that no earthling would know I was around, why would I land in a cornfield and leave a crop circle behind? Let's dispense with this tired old cliche once and for all.

OK, other than those minor glitches, this is a good story - one worth reading. And by the way, I looooovvvvvve Emma Stone. Go for it and enjoy reading it.

The basic idea is interesting and the writing style was fine. The big problem with it is the lack of dramatic tension. It is just a procession of positive events for the hero. I believe there is a surprise towards the end, but after several hundred pages of story, I've taken a break. There are numerous events in the book where the hero could suffer from a dramatic reverse, but it never happens. Pretty much everyone just likes him and things work out the way he wants them to.

This could be much, much more engaging than it actually is. It would be interesting to see what a good screenwriter could do with it.

This is a truly engaging series - and I love Sci Fi books that fully engage you with alien characters. If you want a book that gives you a bit of everything and as I said is truly engaging then this is the book for you - it starts out a bit slowly but keep with it and it builds up and each book in the series just gets better and better. I highly recommend this series.

A book for people who enjoy
Books with a lot of pages, which keep you entertained for many days
to learn how PR and manipulation of the media REALLY works - myself I was fascinated
to wonder.. what would proof of “we are not alone“ do to Humanity as a world-wide society
However, do not let these points discurage you. I really liked all these aspects of the book. I find it i credibly well done. Our main protagonist Dan is maybe the only human on Earth with true integrity. Truth before profit to the core. You just like him from the start.
We acompany him on his story, day by day, from before the proofs are presented to the world, on the actual day and on to some time after. It's media shows, heated discussions and relevations on world-wide TV events. And it's us with Dan, Emma and Clark at place and learning the most schocking facts first hand. This is so well written, draws you in fast and.. honestly, I caught myself thinking one day: I have to turn on the TV, Dan should be on air soon and tell us the latest news.
And THAT, my fellow Sci-Fi lovers, is what I call a great book.

I did not know of this author or his books before I was recommended to read this story. I was blown away. Not only is it very well written, but the narrative, with its ups and downs, its twists and turns keeps up the interest. The characters are believable and not dissimilar to contemporary figures, I suspect!! It was a page turner, exciting and gripping all the way through and worked on a personal and general level. I was very surprised with how absorbed I was in the whole thing. Thanks to the author for writing such an entertaining book, but it leaves you with a very tiny feeling of unease that this may not be too far from reality eventually. Amazing.
