Oblivious Roommate: M/M romcom (Am I the Problem? Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 527 ratings

Tl;dr: Am I the problem for trying to sabotage my gay roommate's relationship? I have my reasons!

I [20M] moved to a different college just so I can live with my best friend since high school [21M]. But it turns out that in the two years we lived apart, he’s come out as gay, and he never told me! He also has a boyfriend, and I’m really not homophobic, but seeing them together bothers me. Other than that, we’ve reconnected like it’s magic. Living with him is amazing, and everything would have been perfect if his ass of a boyfriend wasn’t around. I don’t think that guy is good enough for someone as funny, interesting, and cool as my friend.

How do I make him dump the stupid boyfriend?

Update: So I’ve been trying to break them up, and I’m starting to realize that, possibly-maybe, I’m the one who wants to date my roommate. Help! He’s the hottest guy I’ve ever known and I keep screwing things up!
Also, is it gay to love smelling his sweaty T-shirt?

*

“Oblivious Roommate” is a best friends-to-lovers, gay-awakening steamy romcom filled with misunderstandings caused by an oblivious himbo who means well but has no clue.
While the books in the series share a setting each can be read as a standalone.

I had such a fun time reading this!

I had such a fun time reading this!
Brace yourself for the himbo-iest himbo that ever himbo-ed. Absolutely flabbergasted that his high school bff Cassian came out as gay but hadn’t told him - Matt finds out when they move in together after two years at different colleges. He’s totally fine with it but he can’t stand Cass’s boyfriend Logan… This book is so funny and Matt is such a loveable oaf. He’s constantly scheming to figure out if he’s gay and to get Logan out of the picture and you can see that his intentions are pure but they’re just the dumbest ideas. He keeps getting told these are bad ideas and to just talk to Cassian but does he? NO! 🤣 It’s frustrating in a totally hilarious and endearing way. I loved Matt’s internal dialogue and how confused he was, I loved watching all of his schemes backfire, and I loved that Logan got some redemption - he’s not the villain Matt makes him out to be but he’s definitely not the right guy for Cass. He’ll get his HEA next and I’m totally here for it! An awesome debut! I’m excited for the rest of the series 🥰 I received an advanced copy for review - all opinions are my own.

Seeing all the mixed reviews I honestly wasn't sure what to expect and debated even starting this series. Saying that, I am so so glad I did. It is the perfect mix of humor and sappiness. I think it is ana amazing portrayal of people growing up, figuring out life, and making dumb mistakes along the way.

This was a solid debut novel. It was sweet and light and had a decent amount of steam. It's not deep or angsty or overly original. Pretty standard bi-awakening, falling for your best friend. This was a super quick read for me, but I doubt it will stick with me long term

OMG Matt. I just wanted to knock some sense in to him. Some of his ploys were truly cringeworthy, but they came from a good (if misguided) place. Cass bugged me a bit. I liked him for the first half of the book. Then everything hit the fan and his reactions seemed really strange. He just seemed very hot and cold, like he couldn't figure out where his mind was at.

This is the second book I've read in the series so far. I'm not in love with it, but the secondary characters have been intriguing enough that I plan to continue reading. I will definitely need something dark and angsty when I'm done though!

I should’ve read this sooner! I’m not a fan of the non straight friend that pines forever, but never makes an effort to find happiness and I love this for that! Cass knew what he wanted and he made it happen since he knew Matt’s feelings (mostly). Matt was supper crazy there for a while, but such a great read!

This is my first book by this author and I’m impressed. There was just enough of everything to make it a really good story. It was a good start to a series and I look forward to seeing what is next.

I am a sucker for gay realizations, and this book had everything. All of my boxes were ticked, the panic, the fantasies, the sweet moments, and miscommunications, everything. I really enjoyed both characters. I was immediately invested in Matt, and I truly wanted to scream at him so many times. Still, it was not too frustrating with the miscommunication as much as it was comical at times. I enjoyed the humorous, light elements, while the story still taps into some really deep and raw emotion enough to get me a little teary eyed. I cannot wait to devour the rest of the Devon Doe books!

I went through so many phases in this book. The story in theory is great, the beginning is awkward, the middle is a little boring, and the end is great. I’m not sure if I would recommend this but I still have it 3 out of 5 stars.

So I really enjoyed Matt and Cass, but I gotta say- the ridiculous things Matt did through the first 2/3 of the book were so frustrating it ramped up my anxiety! I love a good himbo, but lord.
I was glad I read it by the end.

Having read books by this author in their other pen name im pleasantly shocked how different this is. Light hearted, funny and just the right level of sweet. I wanted to strangle matt many times to just speak up but it definitely added to the humour

So cute, I wanted to snack Matt on the back of the head a couple of times out of sheer frustration of his obliviousness. But together these two were the cutest. I didn’t want it to end.

A funny but also touching story as a man tries to figure out if he's gay or not. His confusing thoughts makes us chuckle but there's a sadness in his uncertainty. Matt's biggest fear is losing Cass's life long friendship and so he comes up with some crazy ideas that just don't work but give us a laugh. But at the same time its sad, so sweet and desperate Matt is so touching to read, such a great story.

When two best friends finally become college roommates, Matt and Cass have been friends since their early years. Can living together cement their friendship even more, or is Matt feeling more for his roommate than friendship?

It's a great crowd-pleaser book, easy to read. It's new to me author, but I would read the next book in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid debut
Reviewed in Australia on May 17, 2023
As far as debuts go, this was pretty good. I'll never tire of bi and gay-awakenings and realizing you're in love with your best friend. Matt is a complete disaster and most of his choices were pretty questionable. Cass has the patience of a saint, lol.

At some points, i felt like the book was trying too hard to be funny and I'd have preferred more interaction between the MCs. We spend most of the time in Matt's head and it gets boring after a while
