- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020Holds your interest from beginning to end. Lots of twists and turns.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021Old Sins Never Die is a mystery full of suspense, plot twists, intriguing locations (from London to the Isle of Mull), well-developed characters and my personal favorite, lots of witty, engaging dialog. The main characters are a clever couple, a modern Nick & Nora, that I instantly took to, cheering them on against the odds. Although this is the first book I've read in the Emmeline Kirby& Gregory Longdon Mystery series, I never felt I had to read the previous books in the series to enjoy this one. But since this ended in a bit of a cliff-hanger, I certainly intend to read the next installment as soon as it comes out!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2020OLD SINS NEVER DIE is the sixth book in the Emmeline Kirby & Gregory Longdon Mysteries series and the first book I’ve ever read by Ms. Bernett. But I’ll definitely be back to read more of her books and not only in this series if this is her caliber of writing.
The prologue sets the stage of what’s to come with lots of murder and mayhem. There are multiple stories going on and crimes to be solved, along with deaths and destruction. The story is set in England and Scotland with lots of attention to details and scenic descriptions. The characters have a depth to them, and we learn about them a little at a time. Pasts are hinted at and sometimes ignored. There are criminals, government agents, and police forces involved along with one very nosy journalist, Emmeline, who seems to almost singlehandedly piece together the clues and solve the murders, but there were many others who had a hand in the solving of the cases or had access to information pertaining to the crimes being assessed and analyzed. Her newlywed husband, Gregory, is a reformed jewel thief, or is he? He’s currently the chief investigator of Symington’s, which apparently keeps him within reach of things he holds most dear.
Emmeline and Gregory both have strong wills but also show their tenderness for each other, especially since they are together more often than not trying to get information or bring criminals to justice. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time to offer her protection, whether she thinks she needs it or not. I liked her friendship with Philip, who works in the Foreign Office and is her best friend’s husband, but also one of her go-to people for sharing information. The story takes a lot of twists and turns and brings in different characters throughout. Sometimes they are just discussed, but other times they’re in the thick of things. All have a depth to them.
There are a lot of injuries and deaths, misinformation, jobs to do, travel, arguments, intrigue, Russians, past conflicts, secrets, and possible treason. There is some closure with the murderer unmasked but still a cliffhanger in the epilogue that left me wanting more. The cover fits nicely with the story and gives off a bit of intrigue.
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021This series is getting really, really interesting. Emmeline Kirby and Gregory Longdon are now married. So, that is interesting in itself. Because if you follow the series, and even if you don’t, I’ll just tell you that Gregory is a reformed (maybe) jewel thief, and Emmeline is a journalist and a very stubborn one and very persistent. And this is set in England or it’s set in the UK, I should say, because they end up going to Scotland, too. But, the twists and turns in this one get very interesting. MI-5, of course, is as usual involved, because there’s a recurring character with MI-5 and there are all sorts of secrets involved there, of course, but the action picks up substantially toward the end.
And well, I just don’t want to say too much because then there’ll be spoilers and you don’t want spoilers. Really you should just read this. It’s fun. The romantic relationship and so forth between Emmeline and Gregory are great. All the backstory in terms of characters, you can understand what’s going on without having to read the rest of the series, but I would encourage you to read other books in the series, because for me, a lot of it is the “getting there”. Getting to know the characters, and seeing how they get where they are here. But, you can certainly pick this one up and enjoy it.
Oh, and the book ends in a way that just makes you go, “Okay. I got to read the next one now.”
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021I’ve always been a big fan of Dashiell Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles characters from The Thin Man. Reading Danielle Bernett’s Emmeline Kirby and Gregory Longdon series is just as enjoyable. Old Sins Never Die is the sixth mystery in the series. Bernett has done a masterful job of weaving espionage, intrigue, with a tad of romance into this present-day mystery. The story takes us from Grasmere in the Lake District to London for murder and Scotland for a page-turning conclusion. In Old Sins Never Die, Emmeline and Gregory have tied the knot, but their honeymoon is cut short when Emmeline, a journalist for London’s Clarion who cannot turn off her trouble radar even on her honeymoon, eavesdrops on a conversation that sounds like a murder for hire transaction. The plot twists and turns and offers readers an unforgettable journey down suspense road. If you haven’t read Bernett’s earlier books, I highly recommend them. Following Emmeline and Gregory’s crime-solving exploits is a true delight.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021Fans of Daniella Bernette’s Emmeline Kirby/Gregory Longdon Mysteries need wait no longer for her latest adventure featuring the unlikely lovers—a determined reporter and a dashing jewel thief. Old Sins Never Die is a mélange of espionage, murder, and greed with her signature turns and twists. Set in the picturesque British venues of any Anglophiles’ dreams, the author created memorable characters to drive the good versus evil plot to its stunning conclusion. This book belongs by your fireplace. I loved it!
