Purchase options and add-ons
New York, 1998. Santiago Larrea, a wealthy Argentine diplomat, is holding court alongside his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, a college student and budding jewelry designer, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect in the Larreas’ world—until an unexpected party guest from Santiago's university days shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma’s curiosity about her father’s past, of which she knows little.
When the family travels to Buenos Aires for Santiago's UN ambassadorial appointment, Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the military dictatorship of 1976. With the help of a local university student, Franco Bonetti, an activist member of H.I.J.O.S.—a group whose members are the children of the desaparecidos, or the “disappeared,” men and women who were forcibly disappeared by the state during Argentina’s “Dirty War”—Paloma unleashes a chain of events that not only leads her to question her family and her identity, but also puts her life in danger.
In compelling fashion, On a Night of a Thousand Stars speaks to relationships, morality, and identity during a brutal period in Argentinian history, and the understanding—and redemption—people crave in the face of tragedy.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt seems only natural to give a book called On a Night of a Thousand Stars the maximum number of stars! But Andrea Clark's debut novel truly earned it. Common literary wisdom is that books generally fall into one of three categories: entertaining, educational, or escape. On a Night of a Thousand Stars nailed all three.
First, this novel taught me so much about Argentina's history and "Los Desaparecidos," the victims of a government campaign against suspected dissidents and subversives - horrific and poignant and awful beyond measure. The dark historical account made for an interesting contrast to protagonist Paloma's privileged upbringing and served as a vivid reminder that governments do unspeakable things, yet people somehow have to come to terms with their own country's history and carry on.
Next, this book was quite entertaining, with an action-packed plot and well-crafted balance between past events and the narrator's present day. Paloma and other characters occasionally demonstrated a dry, understated sense of humor which made the characters more real and human. The father-daughter relationship, and the ensuing tensions between Paloma and her parents, were quite poignant. A lot happens in this book, yet I never felt confused or overwhelmed as to what was going on, thanks to the steady pacing. The book doesn't arrive at any easy answers, but I was satisfied with the level of closure I felt with regard to the various plot lines.
Finally, this novel was certainly an escape. The descriptions of the lifestyles of the Argentinian elite with their polo matches, lavish parties, and exotic men and women were highly engrossing, and it was fun to be immersed in their world for a while. There was plenty of passion and steamy romance, and I was immediately riveted by the several brave, handsome, righteous male heroes. The women, too, were strong and complex. The stakes were high, and the endings weren't always happy, but there was a a beauty to the storylines that made the journey well worth taking.
In short, this book made me think, and it also made me feel. I value it for both.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe story of the “Disappeared” during the era of the military junta that ruled Argentina in the 1970s is fascinating and horrifying. People were literally kidnapped off the street and tortured or killed on the merest of suspicions. Even the methods used to kill them were so awful that a shot in the head would have seemed refined.
This is the story that Ms. Clark writes about, and it’s a doozy. There’s a bit too much romance for my taste, but Ms. Clark uses it well for purposes of her story, using it as a means of going back in time to revisit the “dirty war,” as it is called. Particularly considering that it’s her first novel, it’s pretty good. I hope she writes more on this topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI found this book fascinating. I am always drawn to historical fiction mixed with romance, and I also felt personally tied to the story itself simply due to my heritage. My parents left Argentina in 1974, with my five brothers and sisters and I in tow. They were difficult times, and throughout my childhood it was always challenging to get my parents to open up about the desaparecidos, and the times themselves. So I find the subject both important to know and shed light on, while terrifyingly gripping. I really loved the story itself, the tidbits about Argentine culture and Buenos Aires, even the campo. And I thought the dual timeline flowed perfectly. If I had one minor critique, it's that I connected much more with the characters and storyline in the 1970s, than the main protagonist and narrator, and her love interest, in what was meant to be the present time. Still, I read it in one day, which says everything I don't need to about the book. Bravo to the author!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book, although uneven, is worth reading for the subject matter--the dirty war in Argentina during the 1970s. The author alternates between the past and the present and the main character finds out something about herself that her father and mother would rather she not know. It is always tricky when a writer combines romance and history. So this book has a split personality that doesn't always work. But the plot is interesting and the characters engaging.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchasePoor character building. Very little historical background. The story was obvious in the first few chapters.
However, the ending is heartbreaking and decently done.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA way of learning history is through fictional books as well. I heard about On a Night of a Thousand Stars through a podcast.
I knew stories about “Los Desparecidos” of Argentina and their dark history, but reading and learning more is heartbreaking.
Sometimes I had to put the book down (during the 1970s perspective), breathe and relax and continue because Andrea Yaryura Clark’s writing is captivating.
The seventies are dark years for Argentina and many Latin American countries.
People who love historical fiction from a different era should pick and read this book.
I want a copy of this book in my physical library.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was an exchangee on the International 4-H Youth Exchange in 1960 to Argentina. My time there was before the books beginning. I witnessed the start of the unrest and this book brings out many of the feelings of the Argentine people. I grew to love the people as my own family. Trouble was definitely brewing. I followed the news as things worsened. After finishing the book, l cried for Argentina and its mothers and grand mothers. It was another holocaust that happened and the world is still silent!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHistorical fiction that puts the reader directly into the middle of Argentina's Dirty War.
I did dislike Paloma towards the end of the story, but overall an overwhelmingly great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous story about an unknown time in Argentina's history.
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book did an amazing job of explaining what happened during the 1970's in Argentina. It is told in two time periods, the 1970's and the 1990's. Both stories could stand on their own, but the author does a wonderful job of weaving the stories together. I could not wait to read more - to learn about what happened next. It is a beautiful, heart breaking story. A must read!

I loved it! It was history and a love story combined. Tragic and heartbreaking at times. A lot of the places in Buenos Aires I had been to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Argentina's recent history
It is a dual timeline historic fiction, one timeline is during the era of the military junta in the 1970s, the other in the late 1990s. It is educational as one can learn a lot about what happened in Argentina in the 1970s, and about the stories of "Los Desaparecidos". You would cry for Argentina when you learn about all that suffering. However, the fictional story I found flat, without any depth, no atmosphere.
