From the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo of The Royals and When It’s Real comes a sensational new novel about a girl falling for the one boy she should never have met…
Beth’s life hasn’t been the same since her sister died. Her parents try to lock her down, believing they can keep her safe by monitoring her every move. When Beth sneaks out to a party one night and meets the new guy in town, Chase, she’s thrilled to make a secret friend. It seems like a small thing, just for her.
Only Beth doesn’t know how big her secret really is…
Fresh out of juvie and determined to start his life over, Chase has demons to face and much to atone for, including his part in the night Beth’s sister died. Beth, who has more reason than anyone to despise him, is willing to give him a second chance. A forbidden romance is the last thing either of them planned for senior year, but the more time they spend together, the deeper their feelings get.
Now Beth has a choice to make—follow the rules, or risk tearing everything apart…again.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Good girl falls for bad boy may be an old theme in romance novels, but Watt (When It's Real) adds an edgy twist. Since her sister's death three years ago, 17-year-old Beth's parents have become overprotective and overbearing, making her feel like a prisoner in her own home. In an act of rebellion, she sneaks out to a party and hooks up with a stranger, not recognizing him as Charles Donnelly, the reckless driver who struck her sister with a stolen car. The plot thickens when Charles (Chase), recently released from juvie and now living in Beth's town, tries to make a fresh start at Beth's school. Beth knows she should hate him as much as her harassing classmates do, but she can't help being drawn to him. Ironically, he is the one person who understands her pain and offers advice she can really use. Watt skillfully dissects an extremely complicated and highly improbable situation to reveal the layers of emotions experienced by Beth and other characters. Beth's anger toward her parents, the grief she feels for the loss of her sister, and her attraction to Chase will be deeply felt by readers. Ages 14 up.
Customer Reviews
See AllA GREAT BOOK!!!
I liked this book, didn’t love it, but liked it! It brought me to tears and some heart pounding moments. It was a little dark but had some great romance scenes! The story centers a girl named Beth who forgives and falls in love with a murderer (Charlie) who killed Beth’s sister, Rachel. I’m this review 4 stars out of 5 because of some disturbing parts in the story. The parents were a little harsh to Beth and the kids at the school were bullies to Beth for falling in love with Charlie. Overall, it’s a great read with romance, a twisty story of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!
Absolutely Loved!
I’m so sad I’m done with the book! I absolutely loved it!
Angsty YA
I struggled with this story primarily because I had trouble connecting with some of the characters, especially Beth. Despite that though, I praise Erin Watt for writing this book. It’s certainly not an easy story to get through. It touches upon death and pain, the grieving process, and second chances. This book will invoke a range of high, intense emotions that can sometimes make you furious and at other times make you want to crumble with sadness.
Though predictable, ONE SMALL THING is quite an unforgettable teen drama full of angst.
