On the run from heartbreak, she might just end up finding happiness… Calli’s world has fallen apart—her relationship is suddenly over and her chances of starting a family are gone. So when she’s sent to write a magazine article about the Greek island of Ikaria, it seems the perfect escape. Travelling to Crete, where her family is from, Calli soon realises there is more to discover than paradise beaches and friendly locals. When her aunt Froso begins to share the story of her own teenage heartache, will the love, betrayal, and revenge she reveals change Calli’s life forever? One Summer in Crete by Nadia Marks is a gloriously sunny book of family secrets, lost loves, and self-discovery.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat summer read. I loved reading about the culture of the smaller Greek islands, especially the culture of the ones where people live long, productive lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024Format: Audible AudiobookVerified PurchaseI loved how this novel started on the magical island of Ikaria, my mother in law’s island and ended on Crete, my father in law’s island. It is all very real and romantically accurate. A well written beautiful story.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI Read this book when I was in Crete, two Weeks ago. So for me was the perfect book Read in a perfect place.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2021Format: PaperbackOne Summer in Crete is an atmospheric, uplifting tale that sweeps you away to the picturesque Greek Islands and into the life of Calli, a magazine writer who, after heading to the Mediterranean to complete an article for work and mend a broken heart, discovers a new place to call home that’s filled with family, food, culture, long-buried secrets, kindness, support, and love.
The prose is sweet and descriptive. The characters are complex, passionate, and sympathetic. And the plot, using a back and forth, past/present style, is a touching mix of life, loss, deception, betrayal, friendship, compassion, self-discovery, and new beginnings.
Overall, One Summer in Crete is a light, charming, escapist tale by Marks that reminds us that life is comprised of all the messy, complicated, challenging, heartbreaking moments, as well as all the special, lovely times that happen in-between.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be coming back for more
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhat starts as a light summer read becomes an engrossing story you won't want to put down. Centring on the life of Calli, a young woman who seems to have everything (a healthy career as a photo-journalist with its accompanying travel opportunities, a loving family, and a longstanding, sensual relationship) the novel follows the rapid and unexpected unravelling of her life, and the journey of discovery that follows. As ever in Nadia Marks' books, family, relationships, and a story that winds back and forth through the years uniting different cultures and generations, feature strongly and bring engrossing detail, passion and delightful discoveries to the narrative. The perfect read for lockdown if you want to travel in your mind to warm climates and sample the embracing culture and delicious food of unfamiliar, welcoming island cultures. This is also far more than a summer read; as with all her books Nadia draws you in with a light touch until you are absorbed in her characters' lives and then touches your heart in a way which surprises, thrills, awakens and beats out the rhythm of our basic need for love and connection. I've read all four of Nadia's books and bought this one as soon as it was released; it has not disappointed. Recommendations: her other 3 books, Secrets Under The Sun, Between The Orange Groves, and Among The Lemon Trees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a beautiful read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the second of Nadia's books I have read, ordered the minute I finished the first. Now I have just purchased another. What a beautifully written book, I really felt I was there in Crete all the time. Such emotion and love blended into a story. A very powerful read without drowning the reader in historic facts, just enough to paint a realistic picture. One tip, keep a pen and paper handy to write down the names of the Greek dishes of food mentioned with such passion that I have since had to cook them and they are just a delicious as the description in the book. I wish Nadia would include a few recipes or better still write a cook book!

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was an enjoyable read but a bit predictable.I guessed early on what all the big family secrets were but it's still a nice book set in some stunning locations. A perfect holiday read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and heart-warming
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe sense of both place and time were apparent, the characters believable and likable (apart from one - but no spoilers!) The smattering of Greek interspersed throughout (mainly 'mou' to denote familiarity) was just enough to remind the reader of the setting, and the gorgeous Greek islands of Ikaria and Crete were really brought to life yet not over-played to the point of being hackneyed. I loved the warm, sometimes heart-rending and believable story and really didn't want it to end. To that end, I will definitely be reading more of Ms Marks' books!
