Optio: Ancient Rome meets Ancient Germania... (Quintus Roman Thrillers Book 3) Kindle Edition
Will Quintus and his comrades ever make it back to Rome…?
Julius Quintus Quirinius, Decanus of his contubernium, has failed in his mission to secure a bridgehead in Britannia for the emperor Augustus.
Despite their failure, they have collected valuable intelligence from the British tribes that they are keen to share with Augustus, hoping that will restore their reputation.
Together with his rescued comrades, Quintus flees the misted isle of the enemy and begins the long and treacherous journey home.
Once they locate the remnants of their cohort, Quintus is promoted to Optio and tasked with leading his men against rebel Germanic tribes.
Success could mean a fast route back to Rome and the favour of the emperor. But failure means an almost certain death.
When disaster strikes, can Quintus rescue the honour of Rome and lead the cohort to safety?
Or will the odds once more refuse to fall in their favour…?
OPTIO is the third book in the Quintus Roman Thrillers series: action-packed, authentic historical military adventures set in Ancient Rome.

About the author

My years of publishing academic texts are behind me - many are out of print although of course they still appear on my profile.
I am excited now to turn my hand to writing historical novels - set in the early years of the Augustan principate (1st century BCE). The first book in the Quintus Roman series ‘Legionary’ was published March 17th 2023. Second book, ‘Decanus’ was published August 26th 2023.
Delighted that both have been bought by Tantor Media and the audiobooks are now available from January 2024 (Legionary) and February 2024 (Decanus). Matthew Lloyd Davies does a brilliant job of narrating.
Third book (Optio) was published in January 2024 and number Four (Centurion) in September 2024. Next in the series: ‘Scutarius’ (shield-bearer) is about to enter first edit stage before going on pre release on Amazon. Thanks to all readers, especially those wonderful people who leave positive reviews.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2024I throughly enjoyed these 3 books in what I hope is a long series.
While not exactly fast paced it is great story telling of what we think the 106 B.C. Era for Roman Legionnaires was all about.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2024Enjoyable storyline with just a few proofing errors to distract those inclined to notice such things. 4 more words required
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024Nice details that seem to be historically accurate. Keeps a nice medium pace, skips a little of the tedium without it feeling like time jumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Roman Series
Once again, Neil Denby has written a great adventure with great storylines and characters. Quintus and his contubernium get in and out of trouble on a regular basis throughout this book but always seem to escape with minimal loses. Highly recommend and can hardly wait for the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and gripping with every page turn.
Having read books 1 and 2, this carries on the story at the same pace. Wonderful Characters and a great story, that keep you glued to every page. The best thing about this book, is that I finish it half a mile from the Appian way, in Rome. After visiting the Colliseum yesterday and the Forum and Paletine hill, I can imagine these brave brothers in arms finally reaching Rome and being hailed as heroes. I can't wait for book four.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read
Not a bad read; I read all three of these; certainly more interesting than a lot of other amazon books I've read.
