Our Little Secret Paperback – January 1, 2017

3.9 out of 5 stars 760 ratings

For fans of In a Dark, Dark Wood and All the Missing Girls comes Our Little Secret, a compulsive and thrilling debut about a missing woman, a tangled love triangle, the secrets we keep and the secrets we share.

The detective wants to know what happened to Saskia, as if I could just skip to the ending and all would be well. But stories begin at the beginning and some secrets have to be earned.

Angela is being held in a police interrogation room. Her ex’s wife has gone missing and Detective Novak is sure Angela knows something, despite her claim that she’s not involved.

At Novak’s prodding, Angela tells a story going back ten years, explaining how she met and fell in love with her high school friend HP. But as her past unfolds, she reveals a disconcerting love triangle and a dark, tangled web of betrayals. Is Angela a scorned ex-lover with criminal intent? Or a pawn in someone else’s revenge scheme? Who is she protecting? And why?

Twisty and suspenseful,
Our Little Secret is an intense cat-and-mouse game and a riveting thriller about the lies we tell others—and ourselves.

This is a debut! I can't believe it.
Thank you, St. Martin's Press for providing me with this phenomenal read! Who would have thought that such a brightly covered book could be so dark? I had no expectations when cracking open this book. It's a debut and usually that's enough to know it could go either way. Our Little Secret blew me away! I felt an instant hatred toward Angela, the person this story revolves around. Whether it was her nonchalant attitude or the emotionless way she spoke, I just knew I didn't like her and yet, I could not stop reading this book! Whether I liked her not didn't matter. This was Angela's story to tell. Our Little Secret is not a thriller that causes your heart to race. It's not an edge-of-your-seat kind of read, but I promise you it's one you haven't read before. This book takes a hold of you until that final page. Yes. The FINAL page. This is a book that can be spoiled by a single detail and I don't want to spoil this book for anyone. Read it and enjoy the story.

I wasn't planning on leaving a review and only because I haven't been in a review writing mood lately but since I can't stop thinking about this one, I thought I should say a few quick words.

For a debut novel, and a short story, this was definitely worth reading! I say that because any book that leaves me thinking about it and questioning things long after I finished, means it obviously left some kind of impression on me. Albeit some of the story was a little frustrating, almost angsty (which I'm not much a fan of anymore), but as it continues that feeling settles and things start shifting and I saw what was really going on...or did I?! As I said this was a short story, quick read, so I feel it could have had a little more meat to it but then if it did, would it have left me questioning things? And I have to say I love when a thriller/mystery leaves me in that state of mind, it makes it that much more interesting and irresistible.

I was back and forth how I was going to rate this one but no matter it was going to be a high 3.5 to 4 stars but as I sit here and continue to think about the book I can't help but give it more stars. I am looking forward to see what other stories this author gifts us with.

Cancel your plans for the evening once you start this book! It grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. I don't want to give any of the twists away, but this is a unique reading experience. You really only understand what Nay has constructed and deconstructed *after you've finished reading and can reflect on how the characters evolved. It's a mystery for sure, but also a genuine and engaging reminder of the what it's like the first time we fall in love and how it's an experience that stays with us, in one way or another, informing future relationships. You'll get nostalgic and you'll get the creeps...in the best ways possible!

It had the potential to be a great book but it falls short. I liked the beginning with the interrogation of Angela and her story in the beginning. It seemed very real and very sweet, how she met HP and how their relationship developed. But after that the story goes from sweet to crazy. Angela and HP are friends forever and then a couple and it seems like a great relationship until he visits her in college. This is where it gets strange. First he brings Ezra? Then he barely spends time with her after not seeing her in months and immediately latches on to Saskia? I questioned if they were really a couple or if it was in Angela's head since she doesn't seem to be a very stable person, but they had to be close for him to go that far to see her. And HP and Saskia ask her to be in their lives? Asking her to be the godmother and having her babysit and then live with them?? His ex girlfriend who is clearly still in love with him??? Who would really do that? I did not think the ending was a shock at all. Like I said the potential was there it just fell short...the story just moved too fast and was too unbelievable. But it was well written and obviously still has me thinking about it enough to write the review :)

I read this in one sitting, because it was that absorbing. I’m still thinking about it a day later. I honestly loved everything about it, except for the characters who spoke in exaggerated British and American accents - it was kind of hard to suspend disbelief at the way they talked.

I read this book, start to finish, over a 3-day business trip. This isn’t one of those books that requires an investment of 50 pages before you’re engaged. I was caught up from page 1. Even though my trip was jam-packed, I spent every free bit of time reading. The author developed the lead characters extremely well and I connected with her writing style. I only have one negative point to offer: this is a debut novel so we have to WAIT for more!

Spoilers: The first 80% of the book was quite good and well-written (even though Angela living with HP and Saskia and caring for Olive was a *massive* stretch). But so much of the book made little sense (the relationship with Freddy, for example), I figured our unreliable narrator was already in prison or a psychiatric facility. The wrap-up was not well executed. Had LJ been mentally ill since childhood? Were the "spiders" there all along? Had she been violent in any other way? Did she have a real romance with HP? I can handle a fair amount of ambiguity, but the end felt rushed and like the author couldn't craft a twist so she just ended the novel. This is not a crime novel (even tho there is a crime) and there's zero suspense. I'd prefer to give it 3.5 stars. P.S. Many of the 5-star reviews are from people who rec'd free advance copies.

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good, but predictable
Reviewed in Canada on March 31, 2020
I liked the accessible writing style, the storytelling of this book. I got a feel for Angela, the roller coaster of her emotions, her emotional immaturity. But being as she is being interrogated by police about the disappearance of her "rival", and the story is written from her POV as an unreliable narrator, the ending is very predictable. And although I liked her narration, her storytelling, it did get a bit stale after a while because I predicted the outcome and wanted the journey to amp up. I would have liked the past chapters to have been darker, to have more clash. HP was too wimpy for me to view as the man worthy of such obsession and devotion and Freddy was a foppy caricature. I did love what I think of as the "Sopranos" ending. badda bing.
