"G.R. Matthews has taken two of the best things ever created: fantasy novels Kung Fu movies, thrown them together into a blender and left us with something wonderful."

Seven Deaths of an Empire from Solaris Books due out June 2021.

Rep'd by Jamie Cowen.

After studying for a Diploma in Creative Writing, G R Matthews taught the subject at A Level and holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography. Currently working in education with a focus on Child Protection and Safeguarding, he finds time to write in the evenings between battles to get his children to go to bed and the desire to binge watch Eureka on Netflix. He has also studied (been hit a lot) Judo, Kung fu, Wing Chun and Kickboxing - and is not particularly skilled in any of them (hence the being hit a lot).

A D&D enthusiast, G R Matthews prefers the rogue (stabby stabby… who me?) as it suits his imagination and allows him to hide from all the things that go (accidentally) wrong during a dungeon crawl… (and no one can prove I set fire to that town… it was only a little fire, honest!). As a self-taught guitarist the best that can be said is that at least he doesn’t sing along to the songs (all the time) and the few thousand, over the years, who’ve heard him play (and sing) are mostly fine (some, to be fair, are still in recovery, but we wish them well).

At night, he sits and dreams that Spielberg, Lucas, Keanu Reeves, someone, anyone, reads his books thinks they’d make a great movie series (they would, that much is definitely true). With two children (where did they come from?), a wife (long suffering, caring, strong) and two hamsters (who actually show him the respect he deserves), G R Matthews is known for his self-deprecating sense of humour (true), his chiselled jawline (false), and his long career as a heart-throb film star (utterly false).

Loved the richness of the Stone Road books. This is a great read to fill in some of the areas between them.

    A fun short story.

There is not much world building, though we do get a glimpse in the world this series in set in. But the main focus is the fight of the 2 main characters, Liu and Gang, against a band of outlaws.

The fighting scenes were pretty good, and most importantly of reasonable length, unlike some Kung-fu movies who stretch them as much as possible, something I find rather boring. And the interactions between Liu and Gang were very entertaining.

I'll be reading the rest of the series, if only to meet those 2 again.

hat a humorous banger of a short story!

Fun, fast-paced and entertaining. The two main characters are likeable and easy to imagine with no info dumping to get the images across.

It builds up nicely, paints a well rounded picture of the surrounds and leaves you satisfied.

Bang-average (which is a very good thing, just ask the Fantasy Five) job, G.R!

A fun, quick read. I love the addition of Chinese lore in it! My husband, Slade, is obsessed with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms books and any videogames that feature this era. The Chinese had some amazing fighting tactics and unorthodox battle strategies so books that feature that get bonus points from me! There were some places that were a little short on details and could have been spiced up a bit, but overall a good read and a great tease to the rest of the series!

Fantastic little story. The characters seem flat and derivative at first but a few pages in their personalities and Matthews' talent start to show. I was smiling to myself without knowing it and wishing there was more was it was over. If this is any indication Matthews has a future in this industry.

It was good to be back in the world of The Forbidden List series. As always GR Matthews does not dissapoint, I actually think his writing gets better and better, and he already is one of my favorite authors.
This short story was a fun and entertaining read with some unexpected turns in the storyline. I immediately liked the two main characters who go out and do the right thing. Everyone who knows me just a little knows I am a fan of somewhat rough characters who do the right thing.
If you do enjoy it, why not check out the entire Forbidden List series and also go read the Corin Hayes novels, both series are amazing!
I, for one, am very much looking forward to anything he decides to write next!

A great example of the author's work, this winningly combines the Chinese-inspired setting of his Forbidden List series with the humour and action of his Corin Hayes series. The pair of heroes are reminiscent of the best fantasy duos, and the story is surprisingly poignant while offering plenty of action. If you like it, check out his other work!

Well written short story with engaging characters, but Kung-Fu really isn't my thing
