Another Day in Paradise (Tails from Paradise) Paperback – August 27, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
A warm-hearted, autobiographical story about the location and lifestyle in a small village in the Algarve, as seen through the eyes of Karen, and her husband Nick, who made the move seeking a quieter, more serene way of life. What lurks in the shadows of paradise, however, is a life-changing illness she has struggled with in the past and now comes to the fore.
They have made Portugal their home. Will they be able to navigate the health system and succeed in getting her the urgent operation needed, to prevent her from spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair? This adds tension to an otherwise gentle, amusing, highly descriptive story, filled with wonderful observations, funny clashes of culture and an entertaining learning curve for all concerned. The dialogue is so authentic, you can hear their voices. The characters are real and 3-dimensional and the supporting cast of cats and dogs at times threaten to steal the show. This is a fulfilling and satisfying read, uplifting, positive and makes you long for a sequel.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book because I can identify with the people and the places and the dogs and cats. I sometimes regret not
having moved to Portugal sooner, instead of just nine years ago.
I am sorry you are bedridden, Karen, but glad that you can take it because you're in the right place.
Best wishes and love, Scarlett
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2023Format: KindleIn Another Day in Paradise, Karen Telling and husband Nick, decide to pack up, leave the UK and move to Portugal in 2003. They had visited there in the 80's and 90's and decide to head through the Eurotunnel, drive their VW over to Portugal and make it their official home. They rent a few houses before finding the perfect place to buy as they pick up jobs to keep themselves both useful and busy. They have their lovable dogs and stray cats seem to appear at their doorsteps as they learn all things Portuguese. Through medical challenges and other small setbacks, they know that they have chosen the perfect paradise as British expats!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI think you painted a very accurate picture of the frustrations and also the joys of moving to a different country which made this such a compelling read. You are so talented, Karen; please keep on writing and best wishes to you. We could be friends just by sharing stories and love of dogs and cats!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood story that kept my interest. Looking forward to reading more of her stories. I felt really bad hearing that the back surgery did not go well.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021Format: KindleI very much enjoyed reading the unique account of the Telling's move from the UK to Carvoeiro, our new permanent home with a story of our own often mirroring theirs. Animal lovers will appreciate the many devoted rescue efforts. The author brought smiles and at times a heavy heart to "the telling."
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023Format: KindleTelling a great story about moving and acclimating to a new country, and all that is associated with it; I enjoyed reading the story and about this particular region in Portugal. Looking forward to starting Book #2 today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBeing a lover of Portugal, I'd always dreamed of going to live out there. The author has shared her story of the reality of upping sticks and following their dream. A really interesting and entertaining book. Stark reality coupled with wonderful humour make it a must-read for anyone who, like me, loves the country and it's people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read - informative, amusing and honest
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI read this lovely book in a day and found it easy to read and has made me look forward to the sequel, which we also have. As someone who has bought a holiday home abroad (Crete) and eventually moved to live there, many of the concerns, struggles as well as joys and highlights ring familiar. Our move abroad didn't last as my wife couldn't fully settle and wasn't quite ready to retire. We moved back to the UK 5 years ago and will take our first non Greek, European holiday later in the summer to Carvoeiro.

5.0 out of 5 stars A LOVELY, HEART WARMING STORY!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInteresting, heart warming, funny, a true story of a British couple leaving everything behind to set up home in Portugal, only to face more life-changing decisions than they bargained for. I couldn't stop reading. So refreshing to find a book like this, reminds me of Driving Over Lemons but with some very comic pets who threaten to steal the show with their antics. Wonderfully written.
