PLACID RIVER RUNS DEEP Kindle Edition
Diagnosis: hepatitis C. It’s a shocker for Ember Mackay. In 2010, there is no cure and she is far too young to die. Ember needs time to process, so she makes for River Lane, the Southwest Washington summer community her grandparents helped establish long ago. The old cabin holds happy memories, but can they ease the grim reality that will change her life forever?
Her focus shifts when an elderly River Lane patron is found horribly murdered and his brother dies a mysterious death. A handsome artist whom Ember hasn’t seen since childhood becomes friend, lover, and then protector, but his care may be coming too late. When a third neighbor is killed and the cops are no nearer to discovering a motive, let alone the killer’s identity, it becomes clear no one is safe.

About the author

Cat Writer Mollie Hunt is the award-winning author of two cozy series: the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries featuring a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip, and the Tenth Life Paranormal Mysteries involving a ghost cat. Her Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy presents extraordinary cats saving the world. She recently released a COVID memoir which she calls, "a tale of a plague and politics, of depression and inspiration, and an ode to the very real and healing presence of cats." In her spare time, she pens a bit of cat poetry as well.
Mollie is a member of the Oregon Writers’ Colony, Sisters in Crime, the Cat Writers’ Association, Willamette Writers, and Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like her cat lady character, she is a grateful shelter volunteer.
Praise for Mollie Hunt, Cat Writer:
“I know Mollie as a true, dyed-in-the-wool cat person, as a cat guardian and a foster parent and, most importantly, as a human being. One thing I can spot a mile away is true passion... and Mollie Hunt has it. People like Mollie are rare in this world because they infuse their own curiosity… with true empathy... the recipe for not only a quality person, but, in the end, a great artist as well.”

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInitially, I purchased this book for my Kindle, but then won a hard copy from the author Mollie Hunt in a contest. It arrived very quickly and I was not initially planning to read it right away due to having a lot of other books still waiting to be read first. But then I got trapped by my cats one weekend day, and the only thing within reach was this book. So, I picked it up, started reading and next thing I knew I was 9 chapters in and thoroughly engaged in it.
The summary seems to give away a lot about the plot right up front, an impression that carries over with the first chapter, but this is a bit deceptive, the plot goes on further and becomes rather intense; the book becomes quite a page turner that kept me up past my bedtime until I finished it. It reminded me of how much I liked camping as a kid and also, how much I used to love mystery novels, something I moved away from due to an interest in other genres. If you like mysteries....this book is an excellent, nicely paced read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe sense of place along the river was a nice change of venue. I like the style of writing. The killer's motive seemed unreal and characters s bit thin. Overall it was unique which I can appreciate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh boy, NOT your average cosy mystery
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really like Mollie Hunt's cosy mystery books, and when I saw this had to give it a go. Mollie had told me it wasn't your average cosy, and boy was she right. This takes that genre out into the wilds and adds no end more tension and conflict, and yes, murder too. All in all I love this foray into new waters, pardon the pun, and shows another side of Mollie's undoubted literary talent. Thoroughly recommend and be prepared to be scared of still waters . . .
