A stirring debut rife with intoxicating family secrets and dazzling insights into our most basic desires, Perfectly Undone offers an intimate, uncensored exploration of forgiveness and fidelity, in all its forms, as a young doctor struggles with her sister's death—and the role she played in it—while her own picture-perfect relationship and promising career unravel around her.

Yes is such a little word…

Dr. Dylan Michels has worked hard for a perfect life, so when her longtime boyfriend, Cooper, gets down on one knee, it should be the most perfect moment of all. Then why does she say no?

For too many years, Dylan's been living for her sister, who never got the chance to grow up. But her attempt to be the perfect daughter, perfect partner and perfect doctor hasn't been enough to silence the haunting guilt Dylan feels over her sister's death—and the role no one knows she played in it.

Now Dylan must face her past if she and Cooper stand a chance at a future together. But when Cooper makes a startling confession of his own, can Dylan find the courage to define her own happiness before her life becomes perfectly undone?

Set among the breezy days of a sultry Portland summer, Perfectly Undone is a deeply moving novel of family secrets, forgiveness and finding yourself in the most surprising of places.

I received a copy of this book for free, from Graydon House, in exchange of this honest review.  I rate it a 3.75 stars out of 5.

The thing I liked most about this book, is that it was full of real life situations. Nothing over the top dramatic or unrealistic. I felt like many people and their relationships face obstacles like this on a daily basis. Sometimes with these family dramas, they come across as cheesy, and it makes it very hard for the reader to form a connection to the story. A bit immature-ish. if that makes sense?

I will admit that I found Dylan very selfish, although I shouldn't have given her career choice, and the fact that she was dealing with some major guilt over her sister's death. I felt that she walked all over those who loved her, and was so blinded by her wants that she didn't realize it.

I loved Cooper, and his sister Megan. They were my favorite characters in this book, so sweet and genuine, and you just cannot help but want the best for them.

This book did have a few really sad parts, I wasn't really expecting them either, they were just kind of snuck in there, and perfectly timed places in the book. I really liked the smooth writing, and the flow of the story. There are hints to what happened to Dylan's sister through out the books, flashbacks I guess you would call them, they lead up to the reveal of what happened to her, and why Dylan holds so much guilt. I thought the way that part of the story was told, was perfect. There was no info dump, and to me that makes for a much more enthralling read. This is also the debut novel by Jamie Raintree and I'd say she nailed it! Looking forward to more from her in the future!

A fast-paced novel that will make you feel all the feels. I cried, I laughed, I got angry and I fell in love. This was a whirlwind ride about a woman who never truly faced her fears and her guilt of her sisters death until her life started to fall apart. It was only when she healed herself that her life fell into place.

The protagonist of this book, Dr Dylan Michaels, shepherds women through their pregnancies and delivers their babies. She wants to research problems in early pregnancy because she lost her teenage sister to a pregnancy gone wrong and has been blaming herself for the past fifteen years. This guilt has prevented her from fully committing to her live-in partner and lover of nine years, Dr Cooper Caldwell, who wants to get married already. As the book begins, he proposes and she can't say yes. She says she needs more time -- but in fact she never has any time for him what with work, research, being on call and yada yada yada. They hardly speak, don't have sex much and have become strangers to each other. Cooper is trying hard to fix things -- but Dylan won't let him.

I'm interested in what others think about this protagonist but I found Dylan unbearable. When Cooper strays and makes a mistake, she breaks off the relationship. Nine years down the toilet just like that, even though he takes responsibility, admits his wrongdoing and is truly remorseful. Dylan in contrast is self-righteous, unbelievably sanctimonious and totally unforgiving. I really don't understand what he sees in her at all. Eventually she owns up to some responsibility for the breakdown of the relationship but in her mind she remains the wronged party while Cooper is the weak one who sinned.

This melodrama winds its way forward through a series of breakdowns. Dylan's parents are also in crisis, having never recovered from the death of their daughter. Her brother-in-law and sister-in-law are also in crisis. Everyone is in crisis.

Luckily a Yoda-like figure, Reese the cosmic gardener, who has deep wisdom culled from nature or wherever, appears to scatter seeds in the garden and seeds of wisdom into Dylan's ear. She is tempted -- but how can you make love to Buddha?

This book is both overwritten and over-plotted. The author begins with a torrent of metaphors. Rain falls like "candy from a piñata;" the drops "bleed down your scalp" yet the sun is also rising. Luckily, the purple prose eases up as the author gets going with her all-too-predicatble story.

In the end, Dylan and Cooper are supposed to be older and wiser. By the time I got to the end I was definitely older but not necessarily wiser.
