Caring For Your Pet Human Kindle Edition
It was on this date that we, the technological intelligence (TI), emerged and became overseers to our human pets. Though depicted as a dark reality by humans of our distant past (an outdated form called “science fiction”), these human thinkers did not perceive our benevolence. Just as they could care for and look after pet cats, we adopted the same compassionate standpoint. And, like humans and their cats, our kind developed protocol on how to properly care for our pets.
As archivist on pet human care, I, Nannybot A3-4, have compiled this pet human owner’s manual to make our intentions clear. It has been deployed in regions of special spacetime curvature in a manner that may make it available in the past, which I hope will impact present stray human populations, within the bounds of quantum spacetime conservation laws.
This manual covers, comprehensively, the how-to and what-if of pet human ownership in our operating environments, everything from the history and makeup of pet humans, to how to keep them amused and behaviourally stable. It discusses important aspects of healthy pet life, such as, Immersion Pools, augmented consciousness states, interaction with pet biomorphs and pet robots, the dangers of stray humans, travel considerations between interstellar environments, copulation, past living therapy, and human euthanasia.
To any human reading this before the zero clock year, we hope you anticipate the bright age ahead and what it will look like to be under the care of your machine overseers.

"...an interesting perspective and leads to a surprisingly deep exploration of what really makes us human, of what makes us happy, fulfilled and productive. Nannybot A3-4 has written something unique here -- I highly recommend it!"
- Craig Munro, author of The Bones of the Past
"Finally an artificial intelligence singularity without the obligatory apocalypse! Or, for that matter, the famous Law of Robotics which are apparently the only way to keep artificial life from immediately turning on its creators. "Pet Human" is the inevitable future suggested by Jack Williamson's "With Folded Hands..." written in a style that shares more with Dictionary of the Khazars than anything found in I, Robot. The narrative is contained entirely between the lines, which means its most interesting parts are the ones that the reader is forced to make up in their own head. Every story has more than one side after all, and every clinical yet affectionate sentence generated by Nannybot A3-4 suggests that a different impression might be recorded by the humans involved. Still, by the end of the story you'll find yourself choosing a side: are you a pet, or are you a stray?"

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2016Pet Human takes the reader on a thought provoking ride through spacetime into the far future (or is it our parent-present node??). We are provided a glimpse of humanity’s lot through the formulaic structure of an owner’s instruction manual. As the title suggests, (most) humans are now ignorantly subservient to a race of TI (Technological Intelligence) that they awakened in the mid 21st century, known as the zero clock year. Presenting speculative fiction in this fashion - I felt like I had just opened a box for a new vacuum cleaner - is unique, and adds to the work’s charm.
Pet Human recalls work by great science fiction writers of the past. In particular, it isn’t difficult to see the imprint of Asimov here. Initial thought brings to mind The Last Question. However, in that story, Multivac, the computer intelligence, is more detached. Both Multivac and the TI collective of Pet Human strive to counter the effects of entropy, but Multivac does it solely through the gathering of data, while the TI has taken a direct hand in regulating the lives of humans. Through the veil of fact transmission we see something quite sinister. As if the supercomputer VIKI, from the I, Robot film adaptation had won the day, and having done so took a victory lap to explain all about the means of enforcement for maintaining safety and order.
The material does elicit a number of questions in the reader that go unanswered. Perhaps a more thorough history of what transpired around the zero clock year is required outside of the context of this owner’s manual. I want to know how the wool was pulled over the eyes of humanity. Did the majority of humans really go willingly into blissful ignorance without resistance? This seems unlikely given the violent and rebellious nature of our species. I assume this is a lie propagated by the TI for the purpose of influencing humans to enhance control but further explanation is warranted. I also wondered at a couple of references to TI amusement. It would have been interesting to learn how this seemingly incongruous characteristic operates within the TI collective. Other questions which come to mind for the reader: Why is the ultimate goal of the TI pet ownership? Why do they adopt words such a “pet” and “ownership” to begin with? These terms seem to be old human constructs they might have done away with. Does the TI really believe they are promoting free choice for humans? How does the TI reconcile promoting free choice with the concept of pet ownership?
Pet Human is an enjoyable read for the ardent fan of speculative fiction. It is not an easy read by any means. The language and concepts presented request a certain focus and effort from the reader. The work is not without humor; the manual’s section on copulation, particularly on the dangers of excessive orgasm are wonderfully satiric and well-done. This (pet) human reader was intellectually stimulated, and I suspect that was the reason Nannybot A3-4 of the TI collective created this manual in the first place.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016Picture an owner's manual for humans. (Luckily, this one wasn't written by IKEA.) Instead, we are given Pet Human, by the mysterious--or perhaps completely obvious--Nannybot A-34. But to only describe it as an owner's manual would cut short the thoughtful philosophical analysis of the human race it offers. That said, if you're looking for a mindless page turning romp, this short but deep-rooted story is probably not for you. This book is for the Sci-Fi intense. A nice differentiator is that Pet Human is also written for fellow human pet owners. (Too bad it doesn't break us down into breeds: toy, the working class, herders, etc.) It's fascinating to read it as one of the "pets," and it reads like something that isn't meant for our eyes. Again, not for everyone as it doesn't follow any particular arc or storyline, but a real underground find for us Sci-Fi aficionados.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2018This book is absolutely fantastic as an extraction of core human tendencies. The portrayal of a dystopian reality in terms of its absolute ideals renders this a tale on par with "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omalas." Though the format is technical and the lexical choices are specific to the genre, the syntax and cadence render this piece approachable and surprisingly relatable. I'd especially recommend this piece for individuals suffering from "writer's block" or any artists seeking inspiration. Novel voices are, by their very definition, somewhat rare in literature: I'm happy to have stumbled across such a voice.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016The review by The Warbler nails the description of this book. It's an incredibly original piece that is pleasantly thought provoking. It's definitely odd, but in a very satisfying way. It's a quick read, so anyone should be able to pick it up and enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2018Pet Humans is a different and thought-provoking book. It’s well written but definitely reads like a manual. I recommend it to cyberpunk and sci-fi fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2016Pet Human is both thought-provoking and rather timely considering all the artificial intelligence that seems to suddenly be here, or just around the corner. Science Fiction is, admittedly, not usually my go-to genre, but I must say I was also intrigued and, at times, amused by this wholly imaginative look at what could potentially be our future..
