Pieces of My Life Kindle Edition

2.8 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Kevin should be living the life of every eighteen-year-old—applying to colleges, procrastinating on homework, and hanging with friends. Instead, he’s starting senior year at a new school, still struggling to cope with the sudden and tragic death of his secret boyfriend a mere two months ago.

He just wants to go to school, do the work, and go home…and not talk to anyone. But that plan is foiled by Wesley, an arrogant, talkative jock who just won’t leave Kevin alone. It gets even worse when they’re assigned to work together on a project. And it really hits rock bottom when Kevin realizes Wesley is flirting with him.

But maybe this could be a good thing—for both of them. With Wesley being closeted, maybe Kevin can help him make peace with who he is. And if he explores this flirtation with Wesley, this might be the thing to help Kevin work through the grief that clouds his days and find the light of happiness again.

Had to stop reading. Just too many mistakes that killed an already unbelievable, shallow story. Surprised I made it to 80%. This author has potential to write good stories. Some scenes, like Wes suddenly leaving the restaurant needed a whole lot more body to get the reader emotionally invested.

I really wanted to like this book. It could have been a great exploration into the inner mind, emotions, and actions of a high school senior who experienced tragedy, but it wasn't. For me it felt superficial, and I really disliked Kevin, who was the whole focus of the book. He felt sorry for himself (like he was the ONLY person in the world who ever suffered), was self-centered, selfish, and just mean and cruel to other people sometimes. Right to the very end, even when things were going his way, he was cruel to a woman at her husband's death bed. Some of the things he said might have true, but who tells a grieving woman that her husband 'got exactly what was coming to him when he died of a heart attack. And I hope he suffered.' Seriously? Newsflash, abused people often still love their abusers, and she should have been pitied, not further (verbally) abused by Kevin. There are so many other things that Kevin said and did that grated on me, but I can't say more without giving spoilers, so I'll stop. Maybe this is how a teenager would act, but I hope not.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly awful and immature

This story has a main character who is impossible to like, a ridiculous and impossible story that nobody would believe, on top of bad writing and zero editing. Avoid this book. I seriously hope the author has matured and improved since this, but I cannot bring myself to read another of his books.
