Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning: 26 evidence-based and easy-to-apply tactics that promote deeper learning and application (Deep Learning) Paperback – October 1, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Practice and feedback are two of the most essential elements of instruction and getting them right is the difference between instruction that doesn’t connect and deep learning and application. Practice is where people go from what to how. Feedback offers information needed for next steps. How we implement these two critical elements make all the difference and this book shows how.
The strategies and tactics come from training and adult learning research and were selected because of their impact on training and learning outcomes. The five strategies are:
- Strategy 1: Analyze the Job Context
- Strategy 2: Practice for Self-direction
- Strategy 3: Practice for Transfer
- Strategy 4: Practice for Remembering
- Strategy 5: Give Effective Feedback
These are the strategies and tactics needed to make instruction more relevant and responsive to today’s changing workplace and needs. The book is filled with examples, checklists, and job aids to help you apply the tactics in your own situation.
Praise for Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning
Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning is a research-to-practice powerhouse! Filled with golden nuggets of practical insight, Patti Shank’s book shares fundamental strategies in a uniquely crisp and coherent manner. A book worthy of being in the personal library of every instructional designer!
Will Thalheimer, PhD, President, Work-Learning Research, Inc.Patti Shank's latest addition to her Make It Learnable series, Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning, is excellent. Every page has something valuable, and you can read it with confidence knowing that Patti has diligently combed through the research evidence to extract the most useful guidelines. This whole series is an invaluable contribution to the field of learning and development.
Julie Dirksen, Author, Design for How People Learn, and Learning Strategist, Usable LearningPatti Shank’s second book in her Make it Learnable series of books once again hits the mark. In simple, straightforward terms she has boiled down and laid out the research that you need to read as practical approaches; in this case, for practice and feedback. It’s a ‘must own’ reference that every designer should have if you’re to create learning experiences that lead to real outcomes.
Clark Quinn, PhD, Author and learning technology consultant through QuinnovationIt’s a pleasure and a professional responsibility to recommend this book. This and Patti’s previous book Write and Organize for Deeper Learning should be standard texts for all new learning professionals. Patti’s focus on using empirical research for how to design and deliver training is exceptional.
Jo Cook, Live online learning and virtual classroom expert, LightbulbMoment.infoPatti’s book is absolutely brilliant. It covers most (if not all!) fundamentals for effective learning design. It also reminded me that our profession is tough! There are many nuances and subtleties that are extremely important. Patti explains these complicated topics in an understandable and applicable way.

You heard me: you can trust _Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning_ to deliver exactly what the title promises. You may even decide it is a must-have, and not just for yourself.
As Dr. Shank’s well-researched book reminds anyone who might have forgotten, knowledge once heard or read but not repeatedly used will decay, eventually fading out of mind. Possibly absent from your long-term memory is some of the research you once read backing adult learning theory. Not to worry: with this highly readable book whether you are taking in information for the first time or refreshing faded memories, you’ll be encouraged to take part in activities that will help meet your need to recall information, successfully apply strategies and tactics, and elicit effective feedback on the job.
Dr. Shank reminds us that possessing the maturity and discipline to engage in self-directed learning is 21st c. employment essential. If that sounds like a big challenge in addition to a full-time job as a learning professional, imagine how it must feel for everyone else working around you! Fortunately, Dr. Shank provides much-needed perspective on designing instruction for contemporary work environments in her recognizable brand of clear, well-organized writing. She models the strategies and tactics she teaches throughout the book, reducing the cognitive load on your working memory and helping you find the means to encode and retrieve the information you’ll need to create effective learning experiences for others. Learning transfer for all!
Yes, this book is a great share. But it really is a workbook: for your work, at work. You won’t want to give away your copy, particularly if you take Dr. Shank’s advice and write all over it, because by then you’ll realize that your colleagues will need their own space and time to write. That’s OK; note that in the section titled “Want More?” Dr. Shank offers “excellent quantity discounts” when placing orders for an entire team. Dig in and enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2017Patti Shank’s "Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning" is a summary of tactics you can use to create memorable, relevant practice opportunities and provide constructive, beneficial feedback for learners. Everything in the book is backed by research and written to be immediately usable by instructional designers and trainers.
Have you ever wondered…?
How do we create practice activities that will help transfer skills to the workplace?
Ho can we create practice activities that are more memorable?
How can we create more effective feedback than just “correct” and “incorrect”?
Do novice and experienced learners benefit from the same strategies?
How do we make sure learners are practicing the right skills and behaviors?
How can we help learners deal with errors and mistakes?
If we’re training a complex task, should we divide the task into small parts or train a simple version of the whole task?
Is it better to give feedback right away or to delay it?
What kinds of realism are important to training practice? Is it necessary to use lots of multimedia to make training look exactly like the work environment?
Is it better to set goals for specific performance levels or goals for making progress in learning?
All of these questions are addressed in this book through 5 overall strategies divided into 26 tactics.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2017I’ve read the new addition to the remarkable Make It Learnable series from cover to cover, and I’ve enjoyed Patti’s Shank’s wit and wisdom throughout! Patti knows exactly what the problem is: Training should be less about content development and more about people development. As truly meaningful practice and feedback are often absent from training initiatives, she is offering 5 valuable strategies to follow, with actionable tactics you can implement this very moment – for each tactic, she shows practical examples and discusses possible issues. Practice And Feedback For Deeper Learning is simply an excellent resource if you’re interested in helping people in your organization learn, apply, and remember.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2017An excellent addition to every Learning & Development professional's library. I would have L&D staff read this book second, immediately after Mager & Pipe's Analyzing Performance Problems. Patti really knows and shares the research! - Guy W. Wallace EPPIC Inc.
