Primal: Like a Mermaid (The North Shore Fae Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 305 ratings

She's a mermaid shifter. He keeps his identity close to the vest. Could the truth finally set them free?

I was held captive for decades by a soul-sucking monster. It’s a shameful history that no one can know.

While my rescuers have deposited me at Hawthorn Academy—a training school for young fae—there’s no way I’ll let anyone stick me in another cage. No matter how delicious my jailer, the dean of students, Raine O’Keefe.

Worse, with the Black Castle seemingly defeated, a new enemy has awakened to fill the void, unleashing an ancient swarm of evil that attacks the fae.

The sexy dean of students won’t let me leave the safety of the school’s walls and—after much one-on-one time—I suspect I'm not the only one with a secret past.

Is it possible our histories might even intersect?

Answers are nearly within my grasp, but that’s when things turn from bad to worse. That ancient evil…it’s turned its sights on me.

If you love Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter, you'll love this steamy fae romance!

A mermaid with long red hair pulls herself up onto land.

"You've been rescued. You're free."

Aoife scoffed. Even unchained, she wasn't really free. She could never be that again.

ONE BEGUILING EXPERIENCE!!!Busting loose! Green is stacking the cinders, directing the wind and lowering the boom, racking up the shenanigans, powering through chaos and roping all the mayhem, blowing this baby wide open....with a bounty of plot twists and sleek turns...awe inspiring in its depth. Sparks fly...tension spirals. The chemistry and attraction is intense, smoldering and palpable...Remarkable. - Kaye Gunter, Bookbub

USA Today bestselling author A.S. Green lives in chilly Minnesota and spends the all-too-short summers on Lake Superior, which is the muse for her paranormal and contemporary romances. She writes complex characters, action-packed plots, and snarky in-your-face banter. And, of course, loads of steamy love scenes.

When she's not writing romance, she's probably watching Outlander or pleading (unsuccessfully) with her husband to don the kilt she bought him last summer.

I ordered the book, started reading it that evening, and stayed up late to finish it. Both H and h have scars from events in their past and expectations from who they and their peoples are; they're well-drawn characters a reader can root for and care about. And ultimately of course they can't resist the way they're drawn to each other. Loved the setting and the hints about the other fae beings and characters we met. Very intrigued by the Big Bad that's rising, what it wants - who it wants.

Looking forward to the next book!

Although this is a standalone romance in the North Shore Fae Academy series, it does continue a storyline begun in the Fae Hell Hounds of the North Shore series, and for a better understanding of some of the side characters in the story, it would be best to have read those first.
That being said, this was a fast paced story about a Mermaid who was freed (presumably in the last of the hell hound books) from an evil half-incubus, who had kept her prisoner for fifty-five years! She meets the Dean of Students at the Fae Academy of the title, after he takes her in for his brother.
Most of the story is about the two of them learning to trust each other, and a new big evil is introduced in the book, because evil abhors a vacuum.
An enjoyable urban fantasy/paranormal romance, with some intriguing twists on the Fae.

This standalone was the first I've read from this author. It was a great read and I devoured it in a day. Even though its a standalone, and the story of the main characters is finished, it seems the overall plot will take place over other characters books as well. I can't wait to read more of this world with other characters to meet, and also any other book this author has.

Pretty good beginning of a series. Fast read. I will continue with the next book in this series. Hoping there is a little more depth in the second book.

Raine and Aoife are going to be put through some awful times before they even get a chance to take a breath. I loved seeing how hard Raine struggled to keep his strait laced persona after Aoife arrived. I thought she adjusted rather well after being tortured for 55 years. But, her escape doesn't end the torment threatening the fae. One of my favorite parts was Will and Ellie, the youngsters that adore Aoife, using her as their art canvas. That was when I melted for Raine. I'm so excited about the next book I'm starting it right now!

Following the events of the defeat of the Black Castle (Hell Hounds trilogy), this story features Raine O'Keefe and Aoife. He is a fae, but has a secret he fears anyone finding out. She is a mermaid, but is scared to return to the water. This is no ordinary professor/student taboo story. Raine and Aoife's chemistry is undeniable and they are irresistible in the struggle to maintain a distance from each other in public. But passion burns hot, and the idea of anamchara rings true. Will the past haunt Aoife forever? Will truths better left unknown remain hidden?

I really liked this book! The accents were fun to imagine and so was the characters and their personalities! I was a little worried at the end this was going somewhere I didn’t like but thank god it didn’t go that route, so glad this book was amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a new author.

A.S. Green is a new to me author. I was recommended this series through Goodreads.

‘Primal’ is book one in A.S. Green’s Fae Academy.

Raine O'Keefe, a Seelie and the Dean of Hawthorn Academy. He has a secret and if that secret is ever revealed his life as the Dean will be over. But never has that secret ever been close to being revealed until Aoife came into his life. When Raine’s brother Simon shows up to his room one night with an unconscious female in his arms, Raine’s primal instinct to protect kicks in. He can’t let anything especially this female to interfere with his life and his secret.

Aoife, a mermaid has been held captive by the Black Castle for over 55 years, she is broken and afraid to go home in case Brother Peadar finds her and her family. She keeps her secret of being held prisoner and everything that has happened to herself, she doesn’t want anyone especially Raine to know about it.

When the Academy goes into lockdown after a Sluagh is made. With no where for Aoife to go she must stay at the academy. With the lockdown in place Raine and Aoife spend more time with each other, and their attraction for each other grows. Both fight their instincts to claim each other as their mates/anamchara.

This was a really good book, I really enjoyed the storyline, the characters and the different Fae species. The character development and growth was fantastic and well paced throughout the book.

One thing I am a little upset about is that yes technically Raine and Aoife got a HEA but there is still the case of who is the “Mistress”?
    What does she want?
Will Raine be able to continue working at the academy?
Will Raine and Aoife stay together?
Will Raine go to visit his mother?
What will happen now that Raine’s secret is revealed?
So many questions that I guess I’ll never find out, as the next book in the series follows a different character. Hopefully Raine and Aoife will make appearances.
