Proficiency Bonus (Roll for Love Book 3) Kindle Edition
Jason Lu, star of Celestials, is stuck between a rock and a hard place. When the show is cancelled and his character pigeonholed into a homophobic ending, Jason must choose whether to fall in line or break ranks. But one misstep will mean bumping heads with some powerful people.
Teaming up with the very cute guy he met at Comic Con seems like a natural first step and now Lewis and Jason must choose between heartbreak and justice. As they forge ahead, they realise there are no bonuses for navigating life’s challenges, instead they’ll just have to fight for what they believe in.
But sometimes overcoming the biggest hurdles yields the best results.
Proficiency Bonus is a 79,000-word contemporary MM romance featuring plushies, Pokémon, and a fight for the perfect ending. It is book three in the Roll for Love series and can be read as a standalone.

About the author

Charlie lives in England with her husband and two cheeky dogs. She spends most of her days wrangling other people’s words in her day job and then trying to force her own onto the page in the evening.
She loves cute stories with a healthy dollop of fluff, plenty of delicious sex, and happily ever afters — because the world needs more of them.
Charlie has very little spare time, but what she does have she fills with baking, Dungeons and Dragons, reading and many other nerdy pursuits. She also thinks that everyone should have at least one favourite dinosaur…

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis series has easily become one of my all-time favorites. Lewis and Jason have both been in the background of this series since book one and I was so excited to get their story finally. Lewis is such a snarky and sweet character, finding the perfect balance of those two personality traits. His daily struggle between what he has to do and what his brain wants to do was eye opening and really helped me to understand what someone who has ADHD experiences everyday. I LOVE Lewis' giant, loud, crazy family so much and love that his parents still lived next door to each other with their partners. Jason is a hard character to read at first but once you learn more about him, it is easy to see how much Jason has been waiting for someone to see the real him, not just the fame that surrounds him. Seeing their friendship evolve over messaging was super sweet and I love that these two were able to build trust through friendship before they started a romantic relationship. I loved checking in with series regulars like Jay and Edward as well as side characters like Henry. As with all the books in the Roll for Love series, there is little angst, a lot of heart, and smoking hot sexy times! I loved the epilogue as we got to see Lewis and Jason several years in the future, still profoundly in love and building their life together. As Charlie Novak addresses in the author's note, I love that this book is essentially a love letter to any fan who has been disappointed with a series ending, providing hope that those stories that truly matter will get their happily ever after. I am so sad to see this series and but am looking forward to what is next from this amazing author. Charlie Novak's writing is top-notch (as it always is) and she has once again created a cast of characters I wish were friends. Cannot recommend this series and this author enough! I received an ARC for an honest and fair review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book has some of my favorite tropes in it: texting, friends to lovers, and a celebrity MC.
Both the MCs in this book balance each other out. Lewis needed someone to need him and be accepting of his ADHD and certain personality traits that come with that. Jason needed someone to want him enough to stay around and push him to stand up for what he believes in.
One of the best aspects of this book is that they had a texting relationship months before they met in person and decided to date. They really bonded together over liking similar shows like Pokémon, and they helped one another with their personal trials they were going through.
Lewis' huge family felt so comforting and wholesome and the same could be said for Jason and his brother. The family elements were great to read about because often times family is left out of queer novels and I loved that their families were both accepting of them and just wanted them both to succeed.
I've never read about a character with ADHD before but Lewis felt like a good representation of people who have that disorder I have in my own life. The way Jason just wanted to be accommodating and help Lewis in any way he needed was great to read about. Equally Lewis was there for Jason when he was struggling with big decisions in his career life and was ready to help him figure out how to tackle that situation.
Overall a great final book to this series. I'm really looking forward to upcoming books that follow Lewis' siblings.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was so sweet! I loved that Lewis and Jason bonded over Pokémon and gaming/fandom culture. I also really loved that we got some great ADHD rep in Lewis. And Jason was such an anxious bean. One of the other infinite things I absolutely adored about this book was that these two were so into each other that their chats/conversations were the best parts of their days before they started dating. It was just really sweet to see them go from friends to lovers. I also really liked the conversations that were happening around queer characters in film/tv that were being had in this book. It’s definitely something I would love to see happening in real life. Anyway! This book is getting a solid five stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLewis is a very interesting character and I enjoyed reading he and Jason's courtship. I also like that he has ADHD, as do many people in my family. I really relate to his struggles.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSwoony, sweet, steamy, delightful, charming. I feel like I say these a lot when it comes to this series, but Jason and Lewis just epitomize these concepts. As a long-time nerd of the fandom/con variety who has a host of relationships with those of the anime/gaming variety, I loved how the storyline embraces the culture without talking down to those in it OR to those unfamiliar with it. There’s a lot of love on these pages, and not just for the two MCs. Who are, by the way, adorable.
Jason and Lewis connect and move on, then reconnect, building an online friendship that is full of affection and respect and evolves into a relationship that strengthens both as they deal with other obstacles. The resolution of the external conflict is also immensely satisfying for anyone who has been a fan of a show in a similar circumstance. Anything more would be spoilery, but I had a big “if only” sigh during the big reveal scene.
I just loved it all. Definitely a stand-alone, but characters from past books show up and their stories are a blast, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis wasn’t as good as Charisma Check, the second book in this series, which precedes this one. I enjoyed the plot but thought Charisma’s was better. These characters were too full of self-doubt for me, and not being a Pokémon fan, I didn’t get a lot of the references this time. I completely skipped over the sex scenes, which were drab and unoriginal. This was a disappointing finale, which is kind of ironic, given the plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars They're playing for keeps.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBi/Gay MM romance, part of an ongoing series but reads well as a stand-alone. An easy to read story that had me hooked, page-turner. Jason and Lewis met at a Con where they were both working but neither knew who the other was at the time, it would be months before they would reconnect and some time before they would meet again in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, geeky romance
Format: KindleVerified Purchase4.5/5 This was delightful to read. It was fun to see Lewis and Jason meet over Pokémon and connect online. I liked the way this gave Lewis a chance to really get to know Jason (and vice versa) and not fall into the trap he usually does in relationships. The two of them are so sweet together, and it was lovely to see them support one another in big and little ways, as well as find a great, supportive group of friends in Lincoln. I loved seeing Jason fight for what he believed in and get the chance to be his authentic self, and it was wonderful to get an HEA for it—I wish it always went so well IRL. This is definitely where I’d like our world to get to.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite of the series!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLewis and Jason are a great couple. Loved their meet cute! Plus they're super sexy together...and the dirty talk...yeah, veeeery sexy. The way the issue with Jason's show was resolved made their happy ending even better. They were exactly who each other needed. Loved it!
