Prudence: A Regency Cinderella story (The Governess Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 433 ratings

A rags-to-riches Regency story that will keep you turning the pages! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Can Prudence find her forever home…?

1795, England

Miss Prudence Hursley, orphaned from a young age, has grown up at the Paddington Charitable Seminary for Indigent Young Ladies. Primed for service, she is now ready to take up a position as a governess.

Full of trepidation as she takes the stagecoach to meet her employer at Rookham Hall, Prudence is sad to be leaving Nell and Kitty – her childhood friends who have replaced the family she lost and become like sisters to her.

Prudence has been given a temporary position by Mr Julius Rookham to teach – or tame – his two young wards, who have so far had an unconventional upbringing.

But when Prudence meets Julius she finds his changeable moods disconcerting. And it will take more than a little patience to turn the two unruly girls into refined young women, ready to enter society.

With her future hanging in the balance, can Prudence make herself invaluable enough to secure a permanent position?

And can Nell and Kitty advise her on how to handle the mysterious Mr Rookham…?

PRUDENCE is the first book in the Governess Trilogy: heart-warming Regency romance novels with strong female lead characters.

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.

Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.

Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.

Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

Okay, it's another governess novel and you've read a thousand of those already. That's why it takes a skillful and innovative writer to create something interesting from such a well-used plot, and this author accomplished it!

This was so sweet and very clean but a lovely pace and wonderful characters including the twins gave it an interesting edge and warmth.
    Lovely reading!

Oh, such a relief to smile at both characters Rookham and his imprudent Prue. The story hummed along with naughty children and excessively kind servants and an impossibly kind governess. However, it was so reassuringly crafted that I enjoyed the ride. An experienced author is our Elisabeth Bailey who seldom disappoints. Nothing to regret here. We will not make the mistake of imagining "poor Prue's" future where a puff of inclement weather might knock her into kingdom come if she fails to discover a backbone. I am sure we will in the next book of the series when her friend Nell has her turn in the spotlight. But I liked this book it and smiled at the loveliness of the ending.

A very readable book with varying pace. This wouldn’t normally be an issue except the slow passages, of which there were quite a few, moved at a snail’s pace. They were tedious & filled with repetitive reflections of both Prudence & Julius. Mustn’t, shouldn’t, it’s wrong - over & over again. Cut those out & it’s a decent 4 star read.
