I didn’t originally think Albert and David would be considered two people likely to connect and develop a lasting relationship. Albert comes from money with a capital M, is usually confident, quiet, self-assured in his actions, organized, methodical, and very responsible for his decisions, but with some hidden sides as well. David is more the nerd type, focused on his studies, with his end goal down the road firmly in mind, but also civic minded enough to help try to solve a possible problem relating to the Boyfriend Cafe just off campus. He does some research, then approaches Albert, but is turned away when Albert assures him he has it under control. He actually doesn’t, but David persists, and a different type of connection is made, one which involves Albert’s bedroom and some crazy toys, keeping both occupied until it becomes necessary to work together to save the cafe.
I found the two main characters fascinating because they were so different in temperament and mannerisms, Albert being so controlled and rigid while David struck me as having a broader outlook on things, goal oriented but with a sense of humor and just more open and better able to handle life events. Even though Albert is only a year older than David, he seems much older to me, probably due to a fairly structured, goal-oriented childhood aimed at following in the family footsteps. It was surprising to me that David was so willing to submit to Albert’s more dominant side with little or no question when it didn’t seem to be a normal facet of his personality, but it led to him learning new things about himself and opening up in unexpected ways.
I am a big fan of this author’s Rock Jocks series, and the Boyfriend Cafe series is quickly becoming another favorite. Setting up the tea and company with boyfriends cafe reminded of my collage years during the 1960s when some friends and I set up a coffee shop just off campus, only we had folk music and coffee. Brings back great memories of college friends and unique experiences. There were lots of parallels between then and this series, so it struck me as pretty realistic from my standpoint. The characters are unique and memorable, too, not misfits, but not the average college student either, maybe a bit more depth to them, with imagination and a charisma of their own. I have enjoyed both books in the series, and look forward to number 3 and 4 in the future.
