Real Trouble (West Coast Forensics Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 927 ratings

Starting over leads them right back to their beginning. And straight into trouble.

Soren Jorgensen has just one regret - getting involved with bad boy Dany Petyr. Dany had warned him, but Soren let his heart take the lead and he'll never be the same.

A new job in a new town offers Soren a fresh start. He won't make the same mistake again. Then Dany shows up in the middle of a case, turning Soren's tidy world upside down.

Dany regrets hurting Soren. But if he could go back in time he'd make the same decision. His history is too toxic for a man like Soren. Piedras Island is the perfect place for Dany to hide out, until--well, possibly forever.

When a local man is murdered tensions on the island rise, and accusations fly. Will Dany run again, or can Soren convince him to stay this time and face the danger head-on, together?

Real Trouble is the first in the West Coast Forensics series and features second chance, redemption, and grumpy-sunshine tropes. Told in dual POV, Real Trouble follows Soren and Dany all the way to their HEA.

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.

It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.

Love at first binge read.

By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.

Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.

Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.

What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

Average mystery with average love story
3.5 stars for this M/M romantic suspense. In Real Trouble Danylo Petyr, son of a mob family trying to escape that life starts over in the island of Piedras where his uncle was arrested and he thinks his family cannot catch up with him. Soren Jorgensen also looks for a fresh start on the island as a police officer.Neither thinks they would see each other again, not on a small island, not after Dany ran away almost three years ago.Their unexpected reunion stirs up old feelings in both of them that neither seem to be able to resist. And while they are trying to figure out what's up with them a series of arsons and murder upends the peace of the little island. And Dany is right in the middle of it with Soren on the other side of the law trying to figure out what happened. The story itself was actually quite interesting. It did not steal my breath or anything but the mystery and suspense were decent. The side characters I think were part of another bookish universe and the author built a lot on that while writing this standalone which made it a little confusing. Also, we got to know nothing about Soren and Dany's past which was basically the foundation of thier connection. I didn't feel the romantic spark between them as they always said the time they spent together years ago was the beginning of their love and they just basically picked up now years later where they left off. BUT WE GOT TO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEIR PAST TOGETHER. For me it was a serious miss. I know that it's part of the suspense but it would've been nice to actually see how they first met.Despite the lack of sparks and the average mystery I quite enjoyed this story. It was fast paced, the connection between our heros was scorching hot and the investigation part was nice enough!

I am so excited for this new series set in the Veiled Intentions world! Soren has been a background character to many books in both the Shielded Hearts and Veiled Intentions series and I am so happy to finally see him get his HEA. Even in their brief meeting three years ago, Dany and Soren have an immediate connection and amazing chemistry but they both are cautious about restarting a possible relationship based on the events of their past. After everything Dany's family has put him through, it was heartbreaking to see him still trying to make amends for the actions of a family he is nothing like. Both Dany and Soren have a shared history of horrible family members but I love how Soren is able to help Dany see that he is nothing like them and that it is not his job to pay for others mistakes. Though Soren has been in several previous books, we have never really learned much about him other than he is a good cop and very private. It was amazing to see Soren open up, not only to Dany but also to friends and co-workers. As always with an Elle Keaton book, the storyline was suspense, full of interesting characters, and extremely well written. I am really looking forward to more books in the West Coast Forensics series and cannot wait to see what is in store for Shay and Ryder! Though not essential to the story, there is a bonus novella about Kim and Win thatbis a fun read as both characters have significant roles in Real Trouble. Elle Keaton is a must read author for me and I can't recommend her books enough! I received an ARC for an honest and fair review.

Soren and Dany used to date before something happened which resulted in Dany running away believing he was doing the right thing to keep Soren safe. It broke Soren’s heart being ghosted by a man he was coming to love but he picked himself up and attempted to move on. Several years later he has moved to Piedras Island and has made a life for himself as a police officer there, runs into Dany who completely by chance, has moved to the island looking for a fresh start himself. Unfortunately that fresh start is looking hard to come by as he finds himself being investigated by Soren in an official capacity.

I do not know if their prior storyline played out in an earlier series/book but it felt like their background was something I should have been aware of prior to ‘Real Trouble’ where they got the focus and their HEA.

I have read many spinoff series without having read the series that birthed it but this spinoff left me completely confused at first as there seemed to be an assumption by the author that the reader will have read what has come before. As someone who was brand new to the world Elle Keaton created, it took me a large chunk of the story before I finally settled into it as I gradually figured out all the familial/friendship connections between the MCs as well as the myriad of side characters. Because of this I felt like I couldn’t fully immerse myself in the story until more than 50% through despite enjoying watching the relationship build and deepen between Soren and Dany as now all their secrets and vulnerabilities have already been laid bare and they are hoping to be able to successfully move forward in their second chance at love. I did enjoy the story very much and will be going back to read what has come before and then I will re-read and move forward with the rest of the series.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I really liked this 2nd chance romance. There was just the right amout f external drama with almost no internal drama. obviously there had to be some internal push pull with the couple, but Dany and Soren didn't stay angsty and melodramtic for long. And it really made me happy that the people in Dany's life didn't hold his famiy against him and he was able to make a real fresh start. Elle Keaton was a new to me author and this book only made me want to read all her books, lol

This is modern mystery romance, the first book in the “West Coast forensics” series and should be read in order. This book had a great build up of mystery.fantastic character development, and great world building. Danylo and Soren run into each other after having not seen each other for three years. What happens next is bad luck after bad luck as the community is looking for an arsonist and a murderer; their eyes turn to Danylo as the newcomer to town. What a great start to a mystery series!

OK, it’s kind of funny, because West Coast forensics book one is not about anyone who works for West Coast forensics.
Soren is the new deputy on Piedras
island who has his hands full while Matt and Niall are on their honeymoon .
Dany is a chef who is trying hard to distance himself from his mafia crime family.
Dany and Soren had a thing a few years ago and when they see each other, realize that it’s not over.
    Enjoyable mystery romance book .

I have to admit, there were times I just wanted to skip Dany’s chapters and the emotional angst therein, but I was afraid I’d miss something important to the actual plot, so I read them anyway. Dany just struck me as annoying. He flaked on Soren three years ago and is all in position to flake again. He wasn’t very likable and I couldn’t work up any sympathy for his angst. The mystery was more satisfying than her earlier Piedras Island series, as all the pieces were set up rather than the killer showing up randomly at the end. It also seemed to have little to do with the actual West Coast Forensics.

I got this book through a give away and what a treat it is! Characters with a history and with individual depth. I like the romance/crime combo and this book hits all the notes.
Even though this is book one of a series it seems to be populated by characters from the authors earlier series which I have not read. I had no problem enjoying this read without knowing everyone's HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this pair!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2022
This was a brilliant start to the West Coast Forensics series, especially because it had so many familiar faces throughout that meant the world building was already strong (and I was familiar with it). This book follows new deputy Soren and his past flame Dany - otherwise known as Danylo Petyr. Everyone on the island was just so accepting and the pair together had series chemistry. I loved how there was the initial frustration and resentment but this didn't drag on; it felt more realistic and was an enjoyable journey to go on with the pair of them. There were funny moments, steamy ones and all of that surrounded by a bit of mystery with the two cases Soren was working on (and Dany was, of course, surrounded by too). Overall, a great read I'd recommend to others - especially if you've read other Elle Keaton books set on Piedras Island!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pasts Never Far Away.

MM romance told with dual POV, can be read as a stand-alone, HEA. An easy to read page-turner full of intrigue and passion. Dany and Soren haven't seen each other for nearly three years and neither of them expected to meet again on Piedras Island, they are both there for a fresh start but they didn't expect to find it with each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2022
This had potential to be a 5 star but was sometimes lacking depth of emotion. The storyline was good but being a romance book the police investigation took over. There was sexual chemistry and the romance scenes were good. Lots of characters introduced that show potential for future books.

4.0 out of 5 stars New series ❤️
Reviewed in Canada on June 1, 2021
    New series?? Lets gooo!

I wanted to read this originally for the mystery aspect but ended up enjoying a lot more than that! Dany and Soren were complex main characters with different backgrounds and personalities. They had intense chemistry, (super hot) and also history between them.

I was a little confused about their history but the story blended out seamlessly to tie everything together.

The plot was good and the mystery interesting as well! I love the added danger and the whole running from the past part of the story.

This was a super solid read and id love to read more! 4 stars!
