Research Practice: Perspectives from UX researchers in a changing field
Purchase options and add-ons
This book is not an argument for doing user research. Nor is it a tutorial or toolkit for common methodologies. It won’t show you how to run a usability session or recruit users remotely.
Research Practice captures the day-to-day of the practice of user research—what it looks like to work with peers and stakeholders, to raise awareness of research, to make tradeoffs, and to build a larger team. This book takes you inside the field of applied user research through the stories and experiences of the people doing the work. Each chapter explores a specific theme:
Finding a way in presents the various pathways people take to this field. You’ll learn how practitioners navigated from schools, the social sciences, fine arts, and beyond to a career that satisfies and rewards a passion for understanding people.
Getting started in a new role demystifies why organizations hire researchers, how to assess a role, the hiring process, and how to start when you land a new job.
Building momentum describes the different roles and teams a user researcher might work with, how to build and navigate relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and the best place within an organization for researchers to make an impact.
Sharing the work unpacks what researchers really share by exploring how practitioners build an awareness of research, teach research methodologies, and—yes—disseminate research findings with their teams and organizations.
Expanding your practice covers how to navigate growth in both influence and headcount for practitioners, from what research leadership means to how to hire a team to when to operationalize a practice.
Overcoming challenges exposes the hard parts that no one tells you about user research, from the loneliness of being a team of one to battling imposter syndrome to advocating for change to taking an ethical stand.
Where to go next charts the pathways of a research career through an examination of possible career ladders, perspectives on when it’s time to leave a role, and thoughts on where a research leader goes when there isn’t a clear next step.
If you’re in school or considering a career switch, you'll learn what a job in user research might look like. If you’re new to the field, you'll see where your career might go and know how to get there. And if you’re expanding the size or reach of a practice, you'll understand how others have approached it.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022I’ve been readying a career shift into user research for a few months and like any sizable life change, it’s been scary. Nonetheless, this book has been a true beacon of encouragement. The narratives are from researchers who have arrived from a myriad of backgrounds, where they muse on their motive for the shift and explicate their path, and how they converted their professional currency into user research.
There are many excellent books that explore methodologies and practice. This book is unique in how it focuses on the stories of the people who study people.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2021This was one of my favorite books of 2021. It's so good that I actually delayed finishing it a couple of times... because I didn't want it to end!
Gregg Bernstein used storytelling to structure the content and share conversations with other UX researchers. It felt personal, like authentically meeting with colleagues from the industry. Each chapter is full of learnings as well as stories and experiences that feel so relatable.
I highly recommend the reading to established researchers, aspiring researchers, and anyone interested in the UX Research field.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2022I got this book to get a perspective as an outsider looking in on the world of UX and UX research. I’m enjoying the anecdotes and some of the advice, but you’d be just as well served to schedule online chats for free with mentors on ADPList or check out blog posts on Medium. I’m in the industry now and so grateful for all the free content and community support online that got me here.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2021I was told about this book from a UX research networking group. Every chapter I found something valuable. I am currently transitioning and I feel that this book is the key to finding where I belong. Thank you for writing such and amazing book for researchers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2021This is a great read and reference for ux researchers at all stages. It's a great to hear perspectives of other experienced researchers on questions and topics that come up frequently.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2024Rather than a research how-to, Research Practice is about how to be a researcher, how to work with teams, how to work in an organization, how to work with stakeholders. Gregg Bernstein collected the lessons that take years to learn as you're working as a researcher. It's like having a community of excellent researchers from around the industry in your back pocket.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021Useful information delivered in short essays from experienced practitioners particularly aimed at junior to mid-career researchers.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022I wish I had this book when I left academia and became a practicing researcher. At that time, there were a lot of books on running large research organizations, but there was almost nothing about how to get started as a solo researcher or as a member of a small research team. This book does a great job of explaining how to build a research culture, which isn't just about doing great research – it's about the soft skills of navigating an organization and building trust.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for anybody in UX Research
Gregg has done a fantastic job in bringing together some of the brightest minds in the ever-evolving field of UX Research to give an open, informative, and thought-provoking view of the discipline as it stands. Gregg leverages his own rich experience to kick off each chapter before sharing thought pieces and open conversations on topics such as entering the field of UX Research, types of research roles, engaging stakeholders, championing research within your organisation and much more.
Whilst you won't find detailed 'how to' information of research methods and UX practices, you will get a unique take on the field and come away with some excellent insights on the realities of life as a UX Researcher. Highly recommend and I'm sure I'll be referring back to this throughout my career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone interested in UX.
Really enjoyed reading this book - there is a nice collection of interviews from established researchers with themed sections and full transcripts at the end. Some really good conversations around getting buy-in from organisations, overcoming imposter syndrome and growing in the field. It inspired me to improve my own practices.

I had the opportunity to speak to the author, and soon after I purchased the book. It's a treasure trove of thought provoking perspectives, and it's a staple in any UX library.
