★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Rich Hipson must be some kind of alien. He probed me in ways I never dreamed possible. When he was done, he knew more about me than I knew about myself. No one had ever been that thorough with me. Hell, I felt like having a cigarette and paying him for what he did to me."—Steve Wedel, Author of The Werewolf Saga, Seven Days in Benevolence, and Mother
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Richard is a great guy. I like him a lot. He is one of the few cat's I've met that have stuck in my mind. I mean he does email me quite often, but still he is one of the few journalists I feel I have connected with. I dig his passion and drive for his work and was quite impressed with the review/article he put together for THE LOST. I like people who work hard and take what they do seriously. If they happen to be a sensitive human being on top of that then that is a bonus and I want them as a friend and this is how I feel about Richard. Rock N Roll!!!"—Marc Senter, Star of THE LOST (Ray Pye), I KNOW WHO KILLED ME (student)
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "I wanted to say something like, Hipson's hip to what I do but that was too cute and then I thought, Hipson really knows his sh*t or, er...my sh*t but that was too much sh*t so I guess I'll just say you really oughta read this stuff. It's good. Good sh*t."—Jack Ketchum, Bram Stoker Award winning author of The Box, Off Season, and The Lost
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Richard Hipson conducts insightful and in depth interviews with authors, filmmakers and actors for Fear Zone (He asks probing questions and his subjects clearly appreciate the amount of interest he shows in their work. He takes his research seriously, and I know that creators respond when their interrogators have actually read their books and viewed their movies."—Greg Lamberson, Writer/Director of SLIME CITY, DRY BONES, and author of Johnny Gruesome and The Frenzy Way
★ ★ ★ ★ "A Reviewer's Guide to Writing Book Reviews will find a permanent place in my writing tool box."—Catherine Jordan, HorrorTree

About the author

Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2024You can trust Rick Hipson to give you the action on book reviewing. He speaks to the power of effective writing. He has an enticing way of describing his experiences and articulating his professional advice. He’s savvy, funny, and writes with a contagious enthusiasm. If you are serious about book reviewing, this is a jump-start in understanding not only the big picture as a business but also how to discover and/or rediscover book reviewing. Hipson informs the reader about writing an intriguing opening hook, discovering the core ingredients of the story, and capturing the closing pitch that will persuade readers to read the book (ace coaching here). And this is where showing vs. telling will make your reviews sparkle, says Hipson. He has a fascinating Stephen King story about “when you [writers] nail a scene” and the telepathy of that moment—a little bit of jolly transcendence happening between writer and reader and don’t you just love that? I’m a fiction writer and have been writing book reviews for several years on Amazon and Net Galley. Hipson’s book gave me another layer of literary criticism to explore, a keener eye on that landscape, and a delightful boost. A must-read for writers, reviewers, and aspiring critics.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2024The Reviewers Guide to
Reviewing books and Getting Paid for it
By Rick Hipson
Indie horror authors primarily rely on self promotion and online reviews to help drive sales so that they can continue to keep on writing the stories we all love, and to pay their bills. Those reviews on Facebook, Amazon and Goodreads really go a long way to help them out.
If you like to review new books and make everyone aware of just how much you loved them, you'll find this new guide by Rick Hipson to be an invaluable resource.
The book contains all kinds of information pertaining to reviews. It covers how to contact authors, how to find ARC's, as well as guidance on how to write an informative, entertaining review, and it's supported by examples of the authors' reviews before and after edits.
I get to read a lot of ARC copies of books that I've been looking forward to in exchange for leaving an honest review online. I'm not looking to make any money from reviewing books, but I always try to leave a clear, concise review that informs and entertains, and I've found this to be a great source of information.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2024If you read a good book what is the first thing you do? (Well, maybe second after mourning that the adventure has ended and you have to be to work in a few hours or less.) You tell people about it. What if you could get paid for it instead of just giving free advice? Rick Hipson’s new book A Reviewer’s Guide to Writing Book Reviews can help you get your foot in the door. Have you already been doing some reviews on the side? Hipson has you covered there as well. He has a little bit for everyone!
His friendly writing style explains the ins and outs of not only writing a good review but also how to expand your horizons in the field. Everything from where and how to get free books to read to where to send your finished piece. Hipson is more than qualified to help writer’s down the reviewing path with over 20 years of experience writing for such illuminaries such as Rue Morgue, Cemetery Dance as well as a ton of small press magazines and web sites.
In the book he goes through his career as a book reviewer explaining what he did and what he might have done differently. The guide starts with an introduction, not only to the author but to the art of reviewing. As the book goes on layers of knowledge are added, building your reviewing skills thus increasing your chances of payment as well as possibly reviewing one of your favorite authors. All in all a good reference to keep on your shelf.
You can order your copy at crystallakepub.com and don’t forget to leave your own review at sites like Goodreads, Amazon, your social media sites and wherever you think people will read it!
