Right as Raine: An Aster Valley Novel Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 4,233 ratings

Tiller:

As the first openly gay professional football player, I can’t afford to make any mistakes, on or off the field. And the absolute biggest mistake I could make right now would be to fall for Mikey Vining, my best friend, employee and, more importantly, Coach’s baby boy. I might fantasize about Mikey at night-—every night—but actually touching him would be a serious personal foul.

And falling for him? That’s completely out of bounds.

Mikey:

I’ve learned my lesson about falling for one of my dad’s players. They’re a bunch of spoiled jocks with more muscles than brains. I’ve spent years learning to keep my eyes, and my hands, to myself. But resisting the temptation becomes nearly impossible when Tiller Raine and I end up together in a small cabin in a remote Colorado town.

Suddenly, there’s not much to do but look at each other. And talk. And hopefully, hopefully touch.

But what happens when our stay in Aster Valley is over and it’s time to return to the real world? Will Coach blow the whistle on our relationship? Or will Tiller admit there might actually be something he loves more than football after all?

The Quickest Way to an Athlete's Heart is Through His Stomach
Right as Raine (Aster Valley Book 1)Lucy Lennox2021276 pagesOverall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½MM Contemporary RomancePlot: Tiller Raine wasn’t born yesterday. He knows that his career as a receiver in the NFL has an expiration date, just like every other professional athlete out there. That’s why he’s determined to focus solely on football, soaking in every moment because he’ll never know when it might be his last. Part of his preparation for the game includes keeping his body in tip top shape, and for that he has Michael Vining. Mikey has a degree in nutrition and a passion for cooking as well as experience in working with high profile athletes. He’s also the head coach’s son, so Tiller knows he’s trustworthy. And strictly off-limits. He just didn't expect him to also be so delectable. As one of the first out football players in the league, Tiller knows all eyes are on him. The last thing he needs is a distraction— or worse, a boyfriend. The media has no business looking into his personal life because he doesn’t have one. And that’s by design. But there’s something about Mikey that makes him want to break all his own rules, especially when Tiller finds himself spending the Christmas holidays alone with Mikey deep in the picturesque, snow-capped mountains of Aster Valley. First Take: I think I was hoping this book would focus a little bit more on the sports. Sports romances are some of my favorites– there is just something about the high stakes excitement of the season plus the steamy romance that really gets me going. This story is less of a sports romance and more of a contemporary romance. That being said, I really enjoyed getting to know Tiller and Mikey. They spend most of their time in the kitchen, and I can’t deny that I’m a bit of a foodie, and men who can cook are very attractive. The romance itself was solid and well-paced. Characters: Tiller Raine is like a fine crème brûlée: beautiful to look at with firm muscles and hard edges on the outside, soft and squishy and melt-in-your-mouth sweetness on the inside. He is fiercely protective of his personal life as well as his assistant/chef/best friend Michael Vining. No one messes with his Mikey.Mikey is like a spinach and herb soufflé: super healthy and complex and organized, the kind of dish that blossoms when cooked with deft hands and infinite care. He is a talented chef with big dreams, he just lacks the confidence to make them come true. And the drive, lately. There is something about Tiller Raine that has him hanging around in a job that was meant to be temporary. A little bit nerdy and a lot organized, Mikey is the person keeping Tiller’s life running smoothly. And he’s really good at it. Praises: I appreciated how well Tiller and Mikey compliment each other. They are both dedicated friends and want to see the other succeed. Lucy Lennox has given us a couple that is well-matched and this is always pleasant to read about. The town of Aster Valley feels like a dream, and I am excited that we have several more books in the series that will allow us to spend more time there. The town and the characters who live there are a highlight for sure. Critiques: I don’t want to get all spoilery here, but there were a couple of things that confused me. First, we get a double prologue where Tiller and Mikey meet for the first time, and it really felt like we were setting up for a juicy enemies-to-lovers situation… but then by the first chapter five years have gone by and now they are best friends. It felt a little rushed, and made the prologue feel unnecessary. Additionally– and I’m not gonna go into much detail here because spoilers– the primary point of tension in this story just didn’t feel believable to me. There is an external force– in this case, a person– conspiring to keep our heroes apart, and this time I just didn’t really get it. It felt a little over-the-top and unlikely, and honestly, easily surmountable. Themes: Family, Identity, Justice, Loneliness, Man v Society, Sacrificial LoveOverall Tone: Only nominally a sports book, this is really a tale of two friends who just need a change of scenery to realize that together they already own a recipe for greatness.Prose: Dual POV, a first person perspective from both Tiller and Mikey. These two had some excellent banter and fun conversations. Prose is lighthearted and fills the food-lover’s soul. Steam: 💜💜💜💜 There is plenty of action in this one.Swear Jar: 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 A good bit of swear words in this novel.Cliffhanger: HEA, no cliffhanger, but there is a set up for the sequel.Memorable quotes:When my lips landed on his, I felt like I could breathe again. He felt incredible in my arms, underneath me, against all the parts of my body that had dreamed about pressing into him like this.“That’s not how it works,” he said. “If you love someone, you don’t set them free like a butterfly. You chain them to your bed and use your mouth to convince them to stay.”Worthy of a reread? I think so.Stand-Alones, Prequels, Sequels, & Tangents: Book one in the Aster Valley series. Each follows a different couple living in the same town. Best read in order, I think, since the next book’s couple is introduced in this novel. Next up: Sweet as Honey.

One of the things I love about Lucy Lennox is that I never really know what to expect. I have stopped reading her blurbs and just read whatever she writes. Lucy’s new one, Right as Raine (Aster Valley #1/KU), is an excellent start to a new series!! I FREAKING FLOVED THIS STORY!!! It is such a beautifully written, organic, friends to lovers, boss/employee tale between 2 completely opposite men. Tiller, the openly gay, star football player and the off limits, coach’s son Mikey, who is an openly gay, personal chef/nutritionist. A one sitting, did not leave the couch even to pee read , I fell head over heals for Tiller and Mikey’s “do not go there” love story! Although they are both out, there are big internal and external barriers they must break through in order to be together. I was rooting so hard for them!! I have to say it’s been a while since I’ve read a story that gave me the leaky eyes and made my gut ache, something I love so much. There is one part in particular that surprised me in the most unexpected of ways (no spoilers) and left me with all the warm and fuzzies (actually, there are a lot of warm and fuzzy moments LOL) and another that literally had me holding my breath!! ALL THE FEELS!! Everything about this book is spot on..the flow, pace, character development, world building, smoking hot chemistry, OUTSTANDING dialogue and the LOVE story! *LE SIGH*. I fell in love with the town of Aster Valley and the people who live there and can not wait for the next one!!! I will be grabbing the audible ASAP too! Hurry up Lucy with #2!!! LOL Go forth and click!!!

I really loved Tiller and Mikey! The dynamic between them was fantastic! I loved that Mikey had a crush on him for a long time and ended up working for him. And even better was that Tiller developed his own crush over time. They were so cute together and really cared about one another as friends. This story was entertaining, and I loved Aster Valley as much as they did.

I will read any book written by this woman! Lucy Lennox has such a flair for character creation and writes such wonderful stories! I have loved her through Wildes and Marians and now we have a new town to love! I loved this book and look forward to more in this new series. Aster Valley, CO is a small town in the heart of the Rockies just far enough away from Denver to be off the beaten path. It is a defunct ski town that manages to charm people who come to visit, many of whom choose to stay. There is a prequel short story that I suggest you look up, Winter Waites, but it isn’t necessary to read before this. It just gives you background on the OT you meet in this book as well as some of the other colorful guys around town. Both MCs, Tiller and Mikey, have a lot of stuff to work through in this book. They are both openly gay but it is amazing how your family can still manage to pull you down. I was ready to punch Coach V and I hope that our main characters can make him see some sense in the future. I seriously enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more. These guys are so adorable and easy to get invested in. Tiller is an openly gay NFL wide receiver and Mickey is a personal chef and assistant to Tiller (and also the coach’s son.) Talk about a bad idea in the making but what starts out as forced friendship can quickly turn into more, despite how badly everyone wants to deny it. A rich story, just like we would expect from this author. This is not a sports romance, the main character just happens to play football. (Not that there's anything wrong with a sports romance. There isn’t. I have read some awesome ones.) I highly recommend it!

Oh the feels in this book - one minute I was laughing, the next I was swooning, then gasping, and then I was crying. The way the main characters’ feelings for each other were portrayed was palpable and heart warming. Tiller Raine is a star football player who is also gay. Mikey Vining has been Tiller’s personal chef and assistant for five years. He’s also gay. Despite having feelings for each other neither one acts on it until they spend time out of state together because Tiller is injured. Thus the beautiful dance toward their HEA is finally started. There is a lot of past stuff and hurdles that they both have to unpack on the way and this is portrayed perfectly with witty dialogue, characters with depth, and an engaging storyline. This was a swoony, fun, sweet, steamy, heart warming story with low angst. I am adoring this wonderful town and this series. I cannot wait to read about the next Aster Valley couple.

This was book 1 in the "Aster Valley" series. Tiller Raine is first openly gay professional football player. Mikey Vining is a chef and he is also the coaches son. As a rookie Tiller passes out one time too many and the coach recommends he get a nutritionist so he hires Mikey. This was a pretty good read these two really get along great. When Tiller is hurt during a game they take a trip to Aster Valley and stay at a house that used to be a resort Tiller is from Colorado. Mikey doesn't have a good relationship with his parents his father is a piece of work he doesn't have a problem with Tiller being gay as long as he is not in a relationship. I really liked both of these characters Mikey was really sweet he just wants to be loved. Tiller has done what everyone else wants him to do his father told him not to get into a relationship it would be time for that when he retires so he didn't he has been celibate for years in fact he has never had sex and he is 27 years old. Mikey had sex with his former boss until his dad found out and traded him. I couldn't believe his father blackmailed him into leaving Tiller. I liked that Tiller and Mikey became friends with Gent and Winter who knows a thing or two about being a celebrity that's out. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I also love Michael Dean's narration. I am looking forward to reading and listening to the next book in this series.

It was the third Lucy Lennox’s book I read and surprisingly for me, already a fan, she somehow managed to upper her talented writing and her infinite creativity.

This book is simply adorable. It mixes lightness and deep characters personalities constructions, steamy scenes and incredibly heart warming ones.

It’s that kind of book to be read by the warmth of a fireplace.

Oh wow! I just wanna swoon all over the place over this book! Gush a little too, please excuse me but pheewwww these two!!

Loved them both from the off. Sucked in, wrung dry, left in a big puddle of gooey loveliness!

Tiller, the openly gay football star. Which by the way was wonderful! I loved how he was out already. No hiding just him being him! He was so great. So kind and humble even though he was a huge star he was down to earth and shined like a star on the field but his nutrition was causing a problem. His coach told him to ask his son for help and although you don't see it you know he fell there and then for the bossy cutie pie Mikey.

Mikey... my Mikey as he is now known, had been burned before by a Football star and knew he had to tread carefully where Tiller Raine was concerned. Not only to protect his heart but to keep the Coach, his Dad off his back. He reluctantly accepts a job as Tiller's personal chef and over the years suceeds at keeping a wall between him and Tiller. 5 years getting to know each other and a one off chance at time actually alone together and that wall crumbles.

This story is so so good! I loved it all! The build up over the years is not really seen but somehow you feel it. It's like they've been in a relationship that whole time but not really knew it until the physical aspect finally comes into play! I loved them so much. Both were willing to do anything for each other, i fell whole heartedly for them because of that. There were a lot of circumstances and reasons for them not to get involved and i felt the angst of that pouring off the pages but nothing, i mean absolutely nothing could of stopped the inevitable. Goodness once the floodgates opened they couldn't keep their hands off each other! It was hot hot hot!! Phewww! But it wasn't just that you felt. Those 5 years were like they'd built the foundation and it was solid and dependable. I'm gushing i know but this book hit all the spots for me. Little angst, bit of drama, lots of heat, and bucket loads of sweet gooey love!

Brilliant! I'm now gonna go pack my bags and move to Aster Valley. I'm gonna grab a seat at the Diner window and watch as the rest of the series unfolds. Here comes Truman... with Sam hot on his trail! I can't wait!!!!
