Rings of Lust (Rings Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 134 ratings

Lucas

My parents had warned me a relationship would be a disaster for my gymnastics career, threatening to pull their financial support. So, I floated from one guy to the next for years.

And now, at the biggest event of my life, I found myself lonely and wanting more. And the one guy I wanted it with was Cam.

He went to the same college. He was on the same team. Just not my team.

Ugh...I had a crush on a straight guy.

Camden

''Maybe you just need to get laid?" my teammate had suggested.

Here I was, my first Olympics and all I could think about was sex. My first and only time was terrible to say the least and I was hesitant to try again. Hell, I wasn't even out of the closet either.

But the Olympic Village was pretty much a buffet of abs and glutes, and it was athletes only. Coach did tell us to loosen up. Maybe it was time to do just that...but like, naked and with another guy.

I can totally do this casual anonymous thing, right?

Rings of Lust is a full-length MM novel, the first in a trilogy, that has a CLIFFHANGER ending and an eventual HEA, just not in this book. Be prepared for third wheel sarcasm, platypus babies, rippling Olympian muscle, and college-age sexual escapades just behind the scenes at the world’s biggest athletic event.

Finn Dixon made a childhood dream come true and has worked in the zoological field since 2006. He’s taken care of everything from alligators to zebras, but his favorites will always be rhinos. Thus far, his MM romances have focused on contemporary stories that include jocks (and jockstraps), but fantasy, paranormal, and historical have been observed in the crystal ball of Finn’s future.

In his spare time, he likes watching gay films and shows with happy endings (giggity), playing Disney Dreamlight Valley, re-watching Jurassic Park and Clue, and traveling when he can afford it.

And yes, he likes jocks, but he promises all his books won’t be about them.

Or will they?

Steamy, fun budding romance at the Olympics.. with a cliffhanger
This book is an absolute treasure in MM romance! Luke and Cam participating in the Olympics in Gymnastics look for a bit fun and then find much more with each other throughout the games. I like sports romances, but usually what I read has some team sport like american football or hockey in it, so it was very refreshing to read a book about two gymnasts! I confess, I watched some videos from past Olympic Games to better picture their routines and looks. At first it started out as a regular college sports romance with one out and one closeted athlete falling for each other but then it became so much more. The book not only perfectly depicted the stress and high of the Olympics but it also showed two very sweet and loving guys trying to find their way to each other. And boy, there were some pretty sweet moments. And of course the heat was off the charts. At first, the intimate monents were bit much but it got interesting soon enough! Cam struggled with coming out but eventually realized how freeing it could be and went for it. But Luke's parents posed a bigger problem to the budding lovers. I really really wanted to punch them in the face and their controlling BS raise my hackles to no end. By the end, I got so emotional that I cried a little. And that ending? I knew it was a cliff-hanger, but really?? Really? What am I supposed to do now? When's the next book coming?

Boy, did this book deliver. All my feelings were brought out through Can and Luke's story. I love the Olympics' setting as the background. I loved their "meet cute". Wish I had been a fly on the wall when that door was opened and they saw who they were. Their story was sweet and tender. Luke couldn't be more compassionate to Cam, his closetedness and lack of experience. The touching little things they did for each other melted me. All the sub characters were a great boost to their story too.
Even though Luke was out, his story was even harder to endure. Once Cam came out to his Mom, it was going to be much simpler for him to come out when he decides. Poor Luke has such crappy, narcissistic parents. All they cared about were themselves and what Luke looked like in the public eye.
The ending broke my heart. I really hate Luke's parents and I have a feeling it's gonna get even worse.
That you Finn, for writing such a realistic book. I live in Orlando and would graciously let Luke stay with me. I'd adopt both as my grandsons.

This was a pretty good start to the series, with an interesting cast of characters led by two main characters who were easily likable. Camden and Lucas were nineteen and had a heck of a lot of pressure on them, what with being part of the men's gymnastics team at the Brisbane Summer Games and all. And of course, there was the whole matter of Cam being in the closet and Luke having the overbearing, disapproving parents that he had. The latter were portrayed as the villain in the romance between Cam and Luke, and I must admit that Mr. and Mrs. Rivera were a conundrum. They were financially supporting their son's gymnastics training, but they didn't seem all that enthusiastic about it either. I'm certainly curious to see how everything plays out in the second book. Although longer than expected, Rings of Lust was a pretty entertaining 3.5-starred read.

I so enjoyed this love letter to US men's gymnastics in the form of a sweet and steamy coming-out romance between Olympic teammates.

The mutual secret crushes between closeted gymnast Cam and his publicly-out teammate Luke, as well as their playful (but all too brief) mistaken identity texting leading up to their first hookup, pulled me into the story from the start. The teammates' agreed-upon, down-low Olympics fling deepens surprisingly quickly from there, as they build a real relationship while discreetly hooking up at every opportunity and not losing sight of achieving their dreams.

This is an engaging and surprisingly low-angst read with enough sports action and team bonding time to reasonably balance out all the smexy times (of which there's a-plenty - this book lives up to its title), and it captured the excitement of experiencing the Olympics as an athlete. Delving into Cam and Luke's competition mindsets was also an interesting touch, and overall they are well-developed characters - as are their fun and supportive friends/teammates - who make an adorable couple to root for in and out of the gym.

Being the first in an overarching trilogy, this book ends on a cliffhanger (and an emotional one at that), and I eagerly await their continuing story in Book 2. I received an advance reading e-copy of this book and have left this honest review voluntarily. (Also read in KU.) [Story: 4.5 Stars]

As honest as this review is, I’ll own that I’m not entirely sure it’s “fair”.

I struggled off and on while reading Rings of Lust. The characters are likable enough and I enjoyed the Olympic setting. However, I went into this book excited for a sports romance with gymnasts, and I sadly found Rings of Lust to be lighter on the sport, competition, and training details than I expected. I wanted to feel immersed and that wasn’t the case, especially when there were an overwhelming amount of details about seemingly innocuous things in the book—zoo animals and experiences, a resort experience, food, clothing, etc. Maybe it’s simply a case of this author’s style not gelling with my expectations.

The “not working for me” feeling was compounded by my perception of Cameron and Lucas. Despite being a sweet, young couple I was rooting for, their immaturity and sex-addled interactions caused my interest to flag, especially as the book progressed. I kept feeling as though I’d walked in on my young teenage son’s conversations. Yes, I understand these are young adult characters (19), and while I can appreciate this is likely a fair representation of the age group, I couldn’t help but feel like skimming when the boys would talk about “pitching tents” or the like.

I went into Rings of Lust hoping the sports and Olympic competitive aspect would override the youth of the characters, but instead, the reverse was true for me. Add in that the story seemed to drag at moments and get caught on secondary plotlines, possible set-ups for the remainder of the trilogy, and inconsequential details, and it was clear that this isn’t the series for me.

I’m not usually one for sports books…but was recommended this by a friend and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved the chemistry not only from the MC but the whole supporting cast. The closeness of the team and coaches.
It was steamy and sweet. It does have a little bit of a cliffhanger ending. That makes you want to read book two.
Overall it was written beautifully and I’m going straight for book 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome debut novel!

Great debut novel! A rare find - M/M written by a gay man. Thankyou Finn Dixon! There is definitely a difference! As much as I love M/M written by women there is often just a little something missing which could make it even better. Finn Dixon has a done a marvellous job with this first book. I’ll admit I wasn’t too sure of the writing in the first chapter or so but I was sucked in quickly and devoured this book and the next in 2 days. These are nice long books, nothing was missed out and I ended up loving the writing and all the characters.

I like books that give you all the details, I often feel thrown out when they miss days or weeks and you don’t know what’s happened between the characters in those gaps. I love it that we get to see every day of the Olympics here and all the interactions these guys get together and with their teammates and families. The ratio of Olympics/relationship was great. I got my fix of both.

You need book 2 on hand to jump straight into. I like how the author has done this story - think of this like the prequel. Also I think the title made me think this was going to be all gay erotica - it was definitely way more than that! This a lovely story with emotions, great characters and a good amount of really well written sex scenes.
