Royal Service (Royals of Danovar Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 426 ratings

King Phillip is a real life Prince Charming. Golden haired with a Danovian accent, and a solid gold crown sitting on his head, he’s every girl’s daydream. He’s a good man and an even better king, but the one thing he’s been terrible at is choosing a royal wife -- fearing a marriage that’s more about policy than passion. But when his mother invites all the eligible maidens to The Summer House Party, Phillip is trapped in a real-life Bachelor where he won’t have the option of quietly splitting from the girl after the party is over -- he’ll be wed to her for life.

Ella Fernstone is tired of being the family servant. After her father died, Ella was receded to the basement as her stepmother began a full court press to cultivate her own daughters. Ella’s ready to escape the hot mess of a home that she grew up in by finally pursuing her dream of competitive riding: something she’s been preparing her whole life to do. All she has to do is marry one of her step sisters off to the King of Danovar to finally find her freedom. It couldn’t be that hard right?

That was until Ella was the first to fall for the King’s dashing good looks and an offer to ride off with him into the sunset. Ella is hesitant -- a Queen’s life was still one of servitude, but it’s hard to ignore the pull of a handwritten love letter and a skillfully delivered kiss. Phillip too is caught up in seducing what he never expected to find: an eligible woman he might just learn to love. But when the reality of a royal marriage comes crashing down, Phillip and Ella must decide if they can risk their hearts, or their freedoms, on the chance of true love.

New to Leslie? Dive into 'The Bossy One'—a sidesplitting grumpy bosshole rom-com that’s guaranteed to tickle your funny bone!

Leslie North is a USA Today Bestselling pen name for a mysterious author who spins romantic comedies and contemporary romances like a boss (a very bossy one, at that). The cloak of anonymity lets her unleash her wildest creativity, especially in those steamy, swoon-worthy scenes that’ll make you blush.

Leslie’s affair with romance began when she stumbled upon a dog-eared romance novel in her local library. She started writing shortly after and, as they say, the rest was a hysterical, heartwarming history. Now, she lives in a cozy cottage on the British coast, where she takes long, leisurely walks with her two Dalmatians, George and Fergie, who are as mischievous as they sound.

Fun fact: Leslie loves her alter-ego more than her real-life self! Her books are jam-packed with feisty laugh-out-loud characters, especially women who aren’t afraid to take on a grumpy bosszilla. And the humor? Let's just say you'll need to warn people around you about the sudden outbursts of laughter.

She’s head-over-heels for reader feedback, so if you’ve got something to say, don’t be shy—reach out and make her day!

I really enjoyed this story. King Phillip needs to marry by the time he is 30 and he doesn't even have a girlfriend. His mother invites all the eligible girls she could find to have him pick one. Ella is eligible but is too busy helping her stepsisters to compete. He sees her the first day and is very interested but thinks she is just a maid or assistant. When he learns she is nobility, he pursues her harder. Once he wins her, he forgets to treat her as his love and more like it's a job. She leaves and he learns a valuable lesson. I got this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book. The first chapters kept my attention , especially with the development of Phillip & Ella's character. Ella's role in assisting Phillip find a bride was unique.
I would have wanted to see strengthening of the past time adventures along with the Vegas wedding & then the return to Danovar. Unless that is in a future book?

I thought "Royal Service" was okay. Set in the fictional country of Danovar, King Phillip needs to find a wife by the age of thirty to inherit the throne. He has three months left, and his mother, the Queen, has invited all of the eligible (nobility) single women to a month-long selection party/process. Phillip has reluctantly acquiesced to the process, but is hoping to marry for love as well as duty. When he first meets Ella, he is dressed as a mechanic and she is preoccupied with her step-sisters' luggage, so she doesn't recognize him. He is intrigued by her, but disappointed that she is not nobility, and therefore not marriage material. She shares his attraction, and agrees to a fling with him before she returns to America. They send romantic and increasingly erotic letters back and forth, but have a difficult time finding ways to be alone. Phillip prides duty to his country and service to the citizens above all else. Ella is tired of being at her step-mother's beck and call. She figures she'll steer Phillip in the direction of one of her step-sisters, and will then be free to pursue the life she's always dreamed about having. When it is discovered that Ella is nobility after all, Phillip asks her to throw her hat in the ring and become eligible for marriage. Ella is overwhelmed by her feelings for Phillip, but is wary of a life of duty and service to an entire country. Will she agree to be a candidate for Queen? Having played second fiddle her whole life, can she marry the king and find balance between duty and her own dreams?

This was a cute story and a quick read. It's one of those insta-love stories that tries a little too hard to justify Phillip's and Ella's strong emotions in a short time. Ella is an interesting character, torn between her duty to her family and her feelings for Phillip. Phillip is a little too blinded by his duties as King to see and appreciate Ella for who she is, and not just what she can do for his country. The story's largest problem is that Ms. North can't seem to decide if Ella's step-mother treats Ella as a servant because she is cruel, misguided, or simply clueless. You never really get a sense of the step-sister's until close to the end of the book, where the reader is past caring about their role in Ella's life. There is one nice scene between Ella and her step-sister Anna, but again - too little, too late. The closest you get to a good supporting player is the king's brother, who pops in and out of the story as needed to give the storyline a push, and the head of the King's security who remains mostly a mystery through the book. So without strong secondary characters, carrying the story is left to Phillip and Ella. Phillip is single-minded in his prurpose and therefore a little one-dimensional. Ella is a bit wishy-washy as she tries to decide whether loving Phillip is enough for her to give up her own dreams. It all becomes a little repetitive. Overall, it's not a bad book, it just isn't a great one either. But it will suffice for a quick, cute read. (I received an Advanced Reader Copy, and this is my voluntary and honest review.)
