Spotted Pony Casino Mystery Book 1

Dela Alvaro is a disabled veteran who grew up on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation. When an IED in Iraq ended her military career, she came home to reassess her life and landed a job in security at the Indian run casino on the reservation.

Not even a year into being the assistant to the head of security, Dela is promoted on a trial basis. When one of the casino employees is found stabbed and stuffed in a laundry chute, she knows she can kiss head of security good-bye if she doesn’t find the killer before the media gets hold of the story.

While she is in over her head, she can’t decide if the FBI Special Agent called in to help is a blessing or a curse. It’s a man she ran across in Iraq who overrode her authority. When a second casino employee is killed, Dela has to decide if she can trust the special agent with not only keeping her job but keeping the rest of the casino employees safe.

Lots of action, suspense & a couple of dead bodies show up in this varied cast of believable characters. The MC is a wounded Iraqi war veteran handling security at the Spotted Pony Casino on the reservation land of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla. Her 17 yrs in the Army & being given a medical discharge for losing part of her leg has changed her career plans but not her spirit of treating others fairly & doing an honest day’s work. A good read!

I enjoyed the twist and turns of coming to the solution of the main crime, as well as all the by play solving of all the other crimes that are woven into the solution.

This is a great beginning to a new series... The story is full of twists and turns, great characters, and enough mysterious circumstances to take you on a wild journey to find the killer!

I love Ms Jager's stories. She has strong lead characters who have history. They are very human, and they have many concerns. Dela is a military veteran recovering from her past. She is working as acting head of casino security. She worries that people will think less of her if they know about the extent of her injury. She even rescues a dog who ends up with a similar situation!

The author writes sensitively of Dela's condition, but she is given strength and determination to keep going until they catch the suspect. We also learn more of Native American culture as well as casino life. Too, we see how things sometimes are "meant to be".

What more can I say? This story takes us in a new direction! It's a great read with the promise of even better things to come! Read it! You'll be glad that you did!

Easy read. Interesting area in the PACNW to learn about.

Disabled war veteran Dela is acting head of security for the Spotted Pony casino on the Umatilla Reservation. When a guest of the casino’s hotel is found murdered in the laundry shoot, Dela has to solve the crime and apprehend the killer if she ever hopes to be appointed head of security permanently. Dela is assisted by FBI Special Agent Quinn, who seems especially solicitous of Dela, a behavior Dela is uncomfortable with, despite being attracted to him. Together they work their way through a long and complicated array of suspects. An interesting story that is highly recommended.

I like many of this author's books but this one needed help and seemed rushed at the end.

The story itself was interesting but the book really needed an editor. There are redundancies, grammatical errors, and plot swamps which make following the solution muddled. I am still not sure which "she" was being referred to in some places.
