Savages: A dark dystopian horror romance (Badlands Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,005 ratings

I made a deal with the devil and there's only one thing he wants in return...

Me.

They say he's a psychopath.
He is completely deranged.

I heard he was born with madness pumping through his veins.

But I think all those things make him beautiful.
They might be why I fell so hard.

You see, I'm a little fucked in the head myself.
And together, him and I, we're Savages.

Forewarning if you couldn't already tell, our story is not for the faint of heart. Check the CW and be prepared to leave your morals at the door.

I loved the world we 're thrown into and I honestly didn't want to leave.
Savages is an in your face, sick, twisted, demented read. And I loved every minute of it. I'm left with my mouth wide open and my brain screaming for more. I'm not even sure how to review this book. I want you to have the same feelings I had while reading it. Calista grew up in a sick and depraved community. When she finally leaves she realizes she has a very twisted and unhinged mind and she isn't sure how she feels about it. Romero fully embraces every sick twisted thing he does. He loves every minute of it. Put them both together and they are basically king and queen of every demented and disturbed thought you could think of.I loved the world we are thrown into and I honestly didn't want to leave. Natalie Bennett has a way with words that makes you cringe yet love every thing she writes. The characters were disturbed in all the right ways. This will be one book I urge everyone to read. I'm not a lover of dark reads, I am a lover of Savages and the Badlands. Take the journey and find out who Calista and Romero are. You may be just as shocked as I am about how good it is, and how utterly unbalanced it leaves you. But in a good way.

Natalie Bennett does not hold back in her 'Badlands' series, and this book is the start of all the dark and forbidden! Written in a time of eat-or-be-eaten (sometimes literally), 'Savages' shows human nature in all their primal forms. A dark, obsessive...love story? Well, love comes in all forms, and sometimes we have to accept that it can be twisted, dirty, and totally drool-worthy! Characters personalities are beautifully intricate, and there are so many questions answered that the reader doesn't even know they exist until they are revealed! I love a good story that is not predictive, and this is it. Beware the triggers and craziness, they are what makes this book (series) so amazing to read!
I originally read on Kindle Unlimited and ended up having to buy the books so I can re-read this series. If you like dark, twisted, unpredictable plot developments, and just plain "WTH did I just read" stories, definitely check this series out!

Wow, I don't know where to begin. This is a dark story, brutal, painful, yet it works. I am not sure how this story is working for me, only that it is. This review is difficult for me because I feel like I could write two seperate review each with a different rating. If I were to rate this story on the differet aspects (characters, plot, editing, etc.), I would rate is at 3 stars; but rating it as an experience (how it flows, makes me feel, etc.) I would give it 4 or 4.5 stars. Details below.

Rating by breaking down the different elements of the story: 3 stars.

The characters are interesing, broken, but well fitted to each other. The story flows well and keeps me interested in what will happen next; there are a lit of details mussing. I feel like I have been given the bare amount if information to make this story flow/work. The world that is created is dark, gritty, almost post apocalyptic with a cult twist. I have many questions that are not anwsered and feel like I have read the middle section of a story. I am missing the build up, and important plot related details.

Rating as a reading experience: 4.5 stars.

The story both flows and is addictive, before I knew it, the story was over. There are a few scenes that felt like they were written for pure shock value rather then story enhancement, but overall I really enjoyed this story. The characters were interesing and they pulled me into the story. I found myself asking them questions each time they did something, I was involved, participating. I want more of the secondary characters as well.

I am interested in this world and want more, but I have so many questions I am a bit frustrated with the ending... BIG cliffhanger. I was not aware of this and am disappointed it was not better marked. Will I read book two? Yes, eventually; I am not dying to read it the second it is released.

Not bad it's fast paced, there is more "spice" than the actual story. I don't know If I will read the next one.

I love these characters with all their excessive damage and flaws...especially their brand of crazy with side of insanity. I love the chemistry between Cali and Rome. The concept of a fanatical cult and its antithesis totally grabbed my attention.

This book was exhilarating. Despite all the gory violence and hateful vengeance brewing in the background, there's this sense of foreboding lurking.

I want to know their backstories. I want to see how it all plays out. This series has so much potential. Yes, bring me the darkness.

Is Rome really the devil? What kind of dystopian hell do they live in? What happened? And what was that bit about her being under his compulsion?

From what I can tell there are no good guys so far. I want to know more!

Trigger warnings- just pick another book if you have any. This is a rollercoaster of triggers for those who may be sensitive.

This is my first book by this author and it sure will not be my last. I was sucked in from the start...
I have to question myself because I am sure I wasn’t meant to love this book but I have to say I loved it a bit too much... it is seriously twisted and intense, I started it last night and read through the night I didn’t want to put it down..

The characters are all great, twisted and crazy!!! but great!!

I love Calista at first I felt a bit sorry for her to start with, but hell I do not by the end she can take care of herself that is for sure, what a character she is, I really like her.
Romero well what can I say about him... he is very dark. Romero & Calista are totally messed up together.. but are also hot as hell at the same time..

    Fast-paced. Messed up. FANTASTIC!

This is a book unlike anything I have ever read before. Its got enough crazy to fill an asylum with a hot dose of sexy to mix it all up. We've got cultists, cannibals and satanists, a little something for everyone. This was hard to put down it was so addictive a story that I read it in one sitting.

What can you do when the devil is so alluring? Lots of twists, a dash of mystery, a plot thicker than a bloodbath and characters that made my head spin. Romero is one crazy man and not afraid to admit it. Poor Calista so tortured by her past that shes all but indifferent to everything until Romero hits the scene. Two twisted souls entwining together in the midst of insanity. I loved it all!

I'm really interested to see how Romero and Cali's story will progress, what will be in store for us next. Will we get to find out their secrets or will they stay buried so deep that they will never be uncovered. Book 2 cannot come quick enough.
