About the authors
Renata McMann is the pen name of someone who likes to rewrite public domain works. She is fond of thinking "What if?"
Summer Hanford writes gripping Epic Fantasy, swashbuckling Historical Romance, and best-selling Pride and Prejudice retellings. She lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cat. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, has been trying, and failing, for six years to gain acceptance from the cat, but is adored by the humans.
Since the moment she read her first novel, Summer’s passion has always been writing. As a child growing up on a dairy farm, she built castles made of hay and wielded swords made of fence posts. She is also passionate about animals, travel, and organizing her closet. Nothing pleases her more than a row of tops broken down by sleeve length and ordered by color…except working on her latest novel with her cat in her lap, her dog lounging on the rug dreaming of squirrels, and a cup of tea at hand.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2025I really thought this was excellent. I had trouble every now and then following the dialogue but it was an impressive story that on the surface shouldn’t have worked but surely did.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2023Three stars and a half rounded to 4 stars for this variation. It has too little of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, yet enough to touch on their love affair in the most satisfying way. There is much focus on the Bennet girls’ stepmother, Lady Augusta, who is quite detestable and horrid, and who is referred to in the title. Hence, it’s but natural to have a large chunk of the story about her.
This also features a most surprising Anne de Bourgh and a endearingly sweet Georgiana.
A turnoff is how Elizabeth Bennet is altered in her reason for marrying yet unchanged in other matter. Seems a tad mercenary but her reason is understandable.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022Mr Bennet remarried after his wife died and the second Mrs Bennet is absolutely horrible to her step daughters. They are verbally abused and punished for even minor issues such as not drawing a good enough picture or not being proficient with a new piece of music. She's given Mr Bennet 2 sons and dotes on them. The Bennet girls quickly marry to get away from her...Jane to Bingley, Elizabeth to Darcy, Mary to a minister. Mr Wickham isn't in the picture to corrupt Lydia so her marriage is to Colonel Forster.
Much of the story revolves around Mrs Bennet and her relationship with Darcy's cousin the Viscount when they were 16 years old. They had a child together but he refused to marry her ( searching for a bigger dowry) and the child was placed in a loving home. The interactions between the characters is interesting - Anne becomes good friends with Elizabeth and meets different people and lives on the money from her father rather than stay with Lady Catherine.
The story highlights the fact that just because the Ton are very rich, and titled it doesn't make them decent or respectable individuals. I enjoyed reading this even though I didn't understand some portions - the fight over Mrs Bennet's money from the Earl after his son refused to marry her was confusing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2024This is one of those P & P variations I enjoy most. It’s well written, keeps most of the basic characters, tosses in some new ones, but completely upends the plot line. I liked this version of Anne as an independent character who finds delight in children. The cleverness of the Earl of Matlock in his machinations to right the wrongs of the viscount was delicious. And, last, but not least, Darcy’s slow, but fruitful path to understanding himself, Elizabeth, and what she really brought to their marriage was painful, but ultimately successful. As it turns out, the story, to me at least, wasn’t as much about the scandalous stepmother as it was about the changes she wrought in the lives of others.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2015Well I did enjoy this different take on our old favorite, that Elizabeth and Darcy managed a HEA made me say "thank god". Seriously the ending was a little quick and if it had been fleshed out slightly I might have given this more stars. I loved that the book was still all about Elizabeth and Darcy and in saying that I was a little unsure especially after reading the sample. All in all a well written and interesting variation.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024I do appreciate the originality of this story, focusing more on a branch of Darcy’s family line. My only complaint is that the sentence structure is at times awkward, and there are some misspelled or misplaced words that detract from the telling of this tale. Some closer scrutiny and editing is called for.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2015This was a very different plot for a P&P. What I enjoyed the most was the growing love between Darcy and Elizabeth. Also, that Darcy finally woke up to the fact that he was missing some things in regard to his wife and what he needed to do about that.
I did enjoy this book but not quite as much as I did 'Caroline and the Footman' by these same authors. I did like it well enough to buy a copy to add to my library.
All in all, books by Ms. McMann and Ms. Hanford are well written, clean, non-violent and contain romance without being graphic. I will continue to enjoy them and look forward to their next offering. Keep up the good work, Ladies.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2015Enjoyed this. Smoothly executed, though I wished for more of a detailed resolution between D&E. It had some beautiful moments. I've read one other story where Elizabeth must deal with Darcy's overweening pride after their marriage, and this on top of not loving him going into it, and I certainly preferred this approach.
I still felt Elizabeth was herself- strong and kind despite her situation. I was left slightly with the feeling of loose ends but maybe that was intentional? Maybe for lack of confrontation- or at least earnest discussion- btwn Elizabeth and Darcy or Elizabeth and Lady Bennet. Not that Elizabeth and Darcy don't argue at one point, leading to a better understanding, but after the blow up there was no unity. But then, rather abruptly, there was. And as for the stepmother, we don't deal with her character at all except to understand how she effects past and future events. She's static, and almost a plot device.
But there aren't many variations so well-executed. And my complaints are small- I'll certainly reread this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une variation divertissante

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely read
There's some high drama, but not between Darcy and Elizabeth. This is an enjoyable tale of growing realisation and affection.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total Rubbish
Don’t waste your money. Arrogant and distasteful Darcy with absolutely no redeeming qualities . Coupled with a confusing and senseless sub plot that was convoluted and meaningless. If I could give a book a minus mark I would !
