Review
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "The Science Fictionary is such a wonderful resource for fans of SF, fantasy, and horror. Incredibly useful, very well-written, and a lot of strange fun. Highly recommended!"—Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of Cave 13 and The Sleepers War
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "I have no doubt that The Science Fictionary will become a beloved classic in the world of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and I am proud to recommend it to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding and appreciation of these genres."—Taylor Grant, Two-Time Bram Stoker Finalist and Bestselling author of The Dark at the End of the Tunnel
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "From '3D Chess' to 'Zurg,' Robert W. Bly has you covered. The Science Fictionary is a must-have resource book for any speculative fiction fan."—James Aquilone, Bram Stoker Award nominated editor and writer of Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker - 50th Anniversary
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Robert W. Bly's The Science Fictionary manages to be incredibly informative, covering as it does several persons, places, and things in science fiction, fantasy, and horror, that have for too long been left out of such tomes as this, but as a bonus, Bly manages to sneak in a bit of very dry, very droll humor which if you blink, you miss. I found this not only informative, but actually, for me, illuminating (as in: I learned a few things I hadn't known before -- always a plus). Also, I had a damn good time reading it. Highly recommended."—7-time Bram Stoker Award recipient Gary A. Braunbeck
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "In this irresistible volume, Bob Bly draws on his vast knowledge of science and literature to define the concepts, characters, and creations in the sf, fantasy, and horror genres. He covers everything from the familiar to the obscure in clear, incisive prose. Once you get started, you can't stop reading. A must-have for both fans and the intellectually curious."—Robert Lerose
★ ★ ★ ★ "Having all that science fiction, fantasy, and horror information finally in one book, at your fingertips, may just be that exhilarating for you."—The Horror Zine

Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Very cool book, nothing else like it that I know of. Comprehensive facts about science fiction, horror works. Makes a great present for anyone into Sci Fi.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2023I did actually read each and every entry from "A" to "Z". For the most part an accurate and well researched reference. There is, however, some repetition here and there among the entries. There are a few mistakes, too. For example, the author states that Robocop takes place in Chicago but of course Robocop enforces the law in Detroit. Overall, I did enjoy the book and I do recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2023Have you ever been asked about a term used in a science fiction or fantasy or horror novel? I have and sometimes I know but can’t explain it to my satisfaction. That is frustrating to me and to the person I’m talking to. A example is: I wanted a a clearer explanation of an important science fictional idea, work, but couldn’t do it satisfactory to my 8th grade teacher who had read an Arthur C. Clarke book. Now I can find it here. I also was recently asked what a kelpie was from a friend who was reading for the first time a fantasy book. I knew that one and did explain what a kelpie is. I found myself reading and sometimes flipping the pages of “The Science Fictionary” as it reminded me of the hours of pleasurable reading, while lost in fantastic stories and worlds of imagination. It gave me science fiction, fantasy, and horror memories of books I had read but also gave me new books to read. It also took me back to those works I always meant to read but never got around to, and motivating me to reread those favorite novels I love. As I was growing up most females did not read anything but romance. Yes, I did read a few romantic novel but they usually didn’t keep my interest or at least I think so as I went back to reading my science fiction and horror. Fantasy books came to me when I was introduced to it by a guy. The first book was “The Hobbit.” These genres have always been and still are my first choice to read. I do read some other types of books but they are the minority. I now have been introduced to books I haven’t read or known about so my book list is getting longer! If you are a fan or a newbie, this is a book that should be in your bookcase. It will be in mine.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the publisher. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023This is a great addition to any speculative media fan's library.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2023I just wanted to let you know – as soon as I saw The Science Fictionary was on sale – I ran out and bought a copy to give to my wife for her birthday, which was yesterday. I have to tell you – she LOVES it! She’s a super-sci-fi aficionado, and she was so excited to have ALL THOSE DETAILS in one place for easy reference. It’s a gift that will keep on giving.
Thanks for all the hard work putting this book together. It’s great.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023I bought this book for two reasons: I know and respect the author, Bob Bly; my husband has been a fan of science fiction since he started reading. He loves this book! I'm going to recommend it to friends who have the same reading interest as my husband.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2023I enjoyed this book very much. I found a lot of info on my favorite horror and Sci-Fi books, and added a few to my tbr list. Interesting and entertaining, and very readable.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2023As a child who read the World Book Encyclopedia in the bathroom, this is the type of reference work that I really appreciate. It was a pleasure to go through the surprisingly extensive entries, detailing common and obscure definitions from novels, short stories and movies. I'll be keeping this one downloaded from now on. Five stars. Check it out.
