★ ★ ★ ★ "The Science Fictionary by Robert W. Bly is a needed addition to the reference shelf with essential tidbits, descriptions and definitions across its pages, fostering those neat nostalgic flashbacks or wonderful new explorations into the many threads that weave the fabric of our literary and cinematic cultures. The strength of Mr. Bly's work is that he has the temerity to include horror and fantasy along with the science fiction."—The Horror Zine

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "The Science Fictionary
is such a wonderful resource for fans of SF, fantasy, and horror. Incredibly useful, very well-written, and a lot of strange fun. Highly recommended!"—Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of Cave 13 and The Sleepers War

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "
I have no doubt that The Science Fictionary will become a beloved classic in the world of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and I am proud to recommend it to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding and appreciation of these genres."Taylor Grant, Two-Time Bram Stoker Finalist and Bestselling author of The Dark at the End of the Tunnel

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "
From '3D Chess' to 'Zurg,' Robert W. Bly has you covered. The Science Fictionary is a must-have resource book for any speculative fiction fan."—James Aquilone, Bram Stoker Award nominated editor and writer of Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker - 50th Anniversary

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "
Robert W. Bly's The Science Fictionary manages to be incredibly informative, covering as it does several persons, places, and things in science fiction, fantasy, and horror, that have for too long been left out of such tomes as this, but as a bonus, Bly manages to sneak in a bit of very dry, very droll humor which if you blink, you miss. I found this not only informative, but actually, for me, illuminating (as in: I learned a few things I hadn't known before -- always a plus). Also, I had a damn good time reading it. Highly recommended."—7-time Bram Stoker Award recipient Gary A. Braunbeck

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "
In this irresistible volume, Bob Bly draws on his vast knowledge of science and literature to define the concepts, characters, and creations in the sf, fantasy, and horror genres. He covers everything from the familiar to the obscure in clear, incisive prose. Once you get started, you can't stop reading. A must-have for both fans and the intellectually curious."—Robert Lerose

"Having all that science fiction, fantasy, and horror information finally in one book, at your fingertips, may just be that exhilarating for you."—The Horror Zine

The who’s who, where’s where - and Dr.Who’s whats - from science fiction of the past 175 years!

The who’s who, where’s where - and Dr.Who’s whats - from science fiction of the past 175 years!
Bly’s collection is, for the most part, a running list of the who’s who, where’s where - and even Dr.Who’s whats - found throughout the best science fiction of the past 175 years*. (* See William Wilson reference, page 5, The Science Fictionary) With The Science Fictionary, readers hold in their hands a guide to fantastic ideas, and the words authors invented just to describe what they were trying to say. Flipping the tome over, the back cover says it all - Now, get your sci-fi “fix” here! While mainstream writers have readers, only science fiction authors can claim rabid fans. The Science Fictionary is a massive reference guide to science fiction terminology. The dictionary-like entries are clear and accessible. These science fiction words — from bionics and black holes, to warp factors and wormholes - were selected with care by one who knows the genres well. “THE SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY, AND HORROR DICTIONARY A THROUGH Z” Ahhh! Just reading those words gives fans of the genre a warm tingly feeling all over. The rush of overloaded neurons exploding with vivid memories, cross-galactic imagery, and spirit-lifting insights is enough to make one catatonic with glee. Hold still. Look right at this neuralizer. There, that should help calm you down. (* See Neuralizer entry, page 136, The Science Fictionary) Robert W. Bly sets out to achieve three things with this collection of words and their definitions. The first is to provide readers a clear explanation of foundational science fiction ideas, works, authors, or concepts. Almost all of them can be found here. He also provides an enjoyable warp-speed* passage along memory lane. The nostalgic appeal of thumbing through pages of names, locations, and objects, for lifelong speculative fiction fans, is hard to resist. The work provides hours of entertaining reading, even when each entry ping-pongs the reader to another entry elsewhere in the collection. (* See Warp Factor entry, page 211, The Science Fictionary) Finally, Bly realizes there are those fans for whom science fiction, and the related genres of fantasy and horror, are more than entertainment. The lifestyle demands an almost Borg*-like acquisition of all knowledge for the mastery of science fiction trivia. These entries act as both a springboard to discovering new works and new authors, as well as a reminder of classic gems readers would like to revisit. (* See Bog entry, page 30, The Science Fictionary) At the time period in which you are reading this review it may still not be possible to perform a complete Consciousness Download*. If that is the case, please access Robert W. Bly’s mind through the alternative method - a copy of his book, The Science Fictionary. (* See Consciousness Download entry, page 44, The Science Fictionary) Robert W. Bly, a full-time freelance writer since 1982, is the author of over eighty-five books, including The Ultimate Unauthorized Star Trek Quiz Book and The Science in Science Fiction. Bly holds a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Rochester and has published more than one hundred articles in numerous periodicals, including Cosmopolitan and Writer’s Digest.

Very cool book, nothing else like it that I know of. Comprehensive facts about science fiction, horror works. Makes a great present for anyone into Sci Fi.

I did actually read each and every entry from "A" to "Z". For the most part an accurate and well researched reference. There is, however, some repetition here and there among the entries. There are a few mistakes, too. For example, the author states that Robocop takes place in Chicago but of course Robocop enforces the law in Detroit. Overall, I did enjoy the book and I do recommend it.

Have you ever been asked about a term used in a science fiction or fantasy or horror novel? I have and sometimes I know but can’t explain it to my satisfaction. That is frustrating to me and to the person I’m talking to. A example is: I wanted a a clearer explanation of an important science fictional idea, work, but couldn’t do it satisfactory to my 8th grade teacher who had read an Arthur C. Clarke book. Now I can find it here. I also was recently asked what a kelpie was from a friend who was reading for the first time a fantasy book. I knew that one and did explain what a kelpie is. I found myself reading and sometimes flipping the pages of “The Science Fictionary” as it reminded me of the hours of pleasurable reading, while lost in fantastic stories and worlds of imagination. It gave me science fiction, fantasy, and horror memories of books I had read but also gave me new books to read. It also took me back to those works I always meant to read but never got around to, and motivating me to reread those favorite novels I love. As I was growing up most females did not read anything but romance. Yes, I did read a few romantic novel but they usually didn’t keep my interest or at least I think so as I went back to reading my science fiction and horror. Fantasy books came to me when I was introduced to it by a guy. The first book was “The Hobbit.” These genres have always been and still are my first choice to read. I do read some other types of books but they are the minority. I now have been introduced to books I haven’t read or known about so my book list is getting longer! If you are a fan or a newbie, this is a book that should be in your bookcase. It will be in mine.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the publisher. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

I just wanted to let you know – as soon as I saw The Science Fictionary was on sale – I ran out and bought a copy to give to my wife for her birthday, which was yesterday. I have to tell you – she LOVES it! She’s a super-sci-fi aficionado, and she was so excited to have ALL THOSE DETAILS in one place for easy reference. It’s a gift that will keep on giving.
Thanks for all the hard work putting this book together. It’s great.

I bought this book for two reasons: I know and respect the author, Bob Bly; my husband has been a fan of science fiction since he started reading. He loves this book! I'm going to recommend it to friends who have the same reading interest as my husband.

As a child who read the World Book Encyclopedia in the bathroom, this is the type of reference work that I really appreciate. It was a pleasure to go through the surprisingly extensive entries, detailing common and obscure definitions from novels, short stories and movies. I'll be keeping this one downloaded from now on. Five stars. Check it out.
