England, 1952
Marie Beaumont has returned to the ruins of Treasonfield House where she was taken in by her Aunt Giselle as a child.

She finds out that Ned worked with the intelligence services during the First World War and he has far more secrets to share about Treasonfield House than she could ever have imagined.
Ned’s story begins in February 1918: an intricate plot involving German soldiers, English spies and secret identities.
But what does it all mean for Marie? Can Ned give her the answers she craves? Will she learn the truth about her family history?
And can she finally put to rest the secrets that still lurk at Treasonfield House?

5.0 out of 5 stars Spies Among Us
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is the third book written by the author set during WW1 and, once again, the fighting at the front merely provides a backdrop to the story. In this instance, espionage and a different sort of danger are to the fore.
The beginning and the end of the book are set in 1952 so the tale is told in retrospect to a woman, Marie, who is trying to establish why her childhood seemed so unhappy at Treasonfield House in Westmoreland.
The two main protagonists are a woman ambulance driver, Claire, and a soldier, Matthew, both of whom are wounded and unable to fully perform their duties and so are enlisted to the British intelligence network to gather information on their German counterparts. Marie is sent to Geneva and Matthew back to Treasonfield where it is believed that there had been German sympathisers and spies for many years who were reporting back to their masters in Berlin. Some had fled to Geneva, hence Claire's posting.
Dangers lurk in every corner; in every hotel and bar. And although both Claire and Matthew are new to the spy game, they quickly become accustomed to trusting no one. However, the Germans have managed to plant a mole in British intelligence itself and the race is eventually on to track him down once he becomes aware that his cover has been blown. A ruthless individual who will stop at nothing to advance the German cause.
This is an excellent yarn, fast paced and wonderfully researched. The ending has a twist in the tale that I wasn't expecting. Always a good thing! I also thought there was a touch of the Dr Zhivago about things in the way in which the book opens and closes. The explanation given to Marie by her Uncle Ned book-ending the action.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great spy story set in WW1
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA third book set in WW1 and this one is a complex and absorbing spy story, which takes ambulance driver Claire from the horror of the front lines to spy-riddled Geneva. The spies in question all have links to Treasonfield House and connections to Germany from before the war. The level of detail about espionage is first class, and the characters are all people you can root for - ordinary people drawn to the extraordinary by their very ordinariness, their ability to hide in plain sight. This will have you gripped by the plot and also by the sheer amount of research that backs it up. Entertaining and educational - thoroughly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life and death - at war and beyond
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThere was a huge fire at the big house in the village.
"They'd had to wait through days of rain until the firemen declared it safe to search. Ned had been astonished by Giselle's composure. Her husband was dead, and she hadn't seemed surprised.
"It had better be an accident," she had said."
Gripping - and intriguing.
Oh, yes. This story is a proper mystery, and on several levels. From family intrigues to world war horrors, JC Briggs brings all her skill and empathy - and, it has to be said, an admirable level of research and instinct for the speech patterns of the era - into this complex deep dive into the chaos and courage, the tragic timelessness of war.
Claire is an ambulance driver in the midst of the battlefields of war. Connections from England have their place in determining her wartime experiences, from family friends and relations in Europe and then - suddenly beside her at the Front and beyond. Behind the lines this is a Europe obsessed with spies and spying, a war within a war, and both to be experienced and endured. With Claire sucked into more than she could ever imagine.
This remarkable tale moves from the Great War - build up to aftermath - even the aftermath of both world wars, when in 1952 Marie comes to the ruins of fire ravaged Treasonfield House to discover the secrets of her lonely and disjointed childhood, her link to Claire - and discover all there is to know about her severe and enigmatic aunt Giselle.
This a haunting story and rings so very true, a life and death game of consequences and the part one brave young girl played in it. The rich and very real characters in this book and their dilemmas will linger in the mind long after reading. And will say everything there is to say about the horrors of war, and the tragedies of survival that continue afterwards, yet still determined by those years of war that changed worlds, and lives, forever after.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was going to be very in gentlemanly and write, bloody hell! But I won't! I'll just say that this is an absolutely amazing story of a war that should never have happened and have been a war to end all wars. The plot is fascinating and the characters touch your heart. Well done once again dear lady
