The Wallaces invite you into their home and lives and show you quite vividly that even though you are part of a family, there is still a lot to learn about each other.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2013If you don't want to read about family drama, this probably isn't the book for you. But, it may be worth a read if you liked the TV show "Brothers & Sisters". The drama in "Secrets" reminded me of that show, or maybe Ruth reminded me of Nora.
In any case, I agree with the other reviewers who couldn't stop reading; it was certainly enjoyable and left you hanging at the end of each chapter, wanting for more. Like others, the ending was rather disappointing. It felt very abrupt with the introduction of new characters, but more importantly, the handling of some of the main characters was unfortunate (trying not to spoil the story here). It's good to know that a sequel is in the works, because I would like to read more.
However, while the story was good, it was very difficult to follow, due to the massive number of characters. I think another reviewer said it right - you need a family tree - or a relationship diagram. I found myself frequently returning to previous pages just to figure out who was who. If there were fewer characters, I think there would have been more time to develop each of them in more depth. I was also left wondering about the oldest sister's (and her husband's) 'problem' in the first chapters, because it never came up again. It seemed as though that would have been a major part of their story, but it just quietly disappeared.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2012I love mysteries, so I rarely read books like this, but I have to say this one was great. Worth much more than the price. I found myself unable to put it down. If you like books about family life, this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2012I really liked this book from the beginning and I kept turning the pages with excitement despite it reminding me of a tv soap in the last third of the book. I actually got so involved in the storylines that I read the second half of the book in one afternoon's sitting. However, I really felt cheated with the ending which I won't give away here. I was so disappointed with the final pages and feel not only was I cheated but that the author betrayed and cheapened one of the characters I got to like very much.
Did I misunderstand the ending? Perhaps, but if I did I don't believe it's my fault. The ending spoilt the whole book for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2012Better than mediocre, but not exciting or spell-binding as others have made it sound. The book felt more like acts in a play than a continuous storyline. Character development is very good in some, lacking in others. For half the book, I kept having to go back to earlier pages and see who was who; I should have made a family tree to start with. The plot is drama between members of a family, basically each had some deep dark secret that had to be revealed and dealt with. Not a suspense/mystery novel.
Spoiler Alert: one of the issues dealt with in detail is homophobia, or rather a family's efforts at coming to grips with homosexuality. Mostly I felt it was handled quite well, but some people may appreciate being warned.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2012I could NOT put this book down. I LOVED it....until towards the very end! I kept thinking, "what am I missing here?" I felt I was left in the dark at the end regarding 3 characters and believe me, I was living, eating and breathing this book! I'm re-posting my review because the first one would have ruined everyone's ending.
I deplore reviews that give away the ending...and/or the entire plot. AFTER POSTING THE NEGATIVE REVIEW, REGARDING WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A 10 STAR BOOK **********, UNTIL THE END, Mr McCracken wrote me back! What a cool guy! He will be writing a sequel!!! YES, YES, YES... Now it makes sense! I will say, I love the honesty that was portrayed in this family full of secrets! I LOVED the Mother of this family and wished I were more like her!!! She was a ROCK through all the secrets and stress and unknown about her own children and their spouses! And she loved each of them unconditionally~~
Again, thanks Mr McCracken for replying to my review!!! More books like this need to be written because EVERY FAMILY, EVERY PERSON has a story to tell~~
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2012In every family gathering described in the book drama happens and secrets are revealed. The character development is mostly poor. The emotional and psychological impact the secret or drama has on the rest of the family is dealt with relatively superficial. From my perspective nothing is really dealt with in depth. This together with quite a number of editorial oversights make it feel like the book was written in a rush.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tissues at the ready!
Excellent book thank you. I cried my way though it, as certain events have happened to me so were a bit raw. The characters were very believable, who hasn't got some like them in their family? I know I have. This book had me gripped from start to finish, a 'couldn't put it down' book. Sat up til the wee hours reading it before being dragged away by tired hubby :-). Look forward to more reads by this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit aimless
The book overview sounds quite interesting. The characters are well drawn and the book is well written. But it really goes nowhere and depends on "revelations" that are only shocking in the context of middle America morality. A shame really, the author could do much better with a half decent plot.
