Seed Savers-Heirloom Paperback – January 3, 2019

"Impressively original."--Midwest Book Review
It’s late in the twenty-first century and large corporations have merged with U.S. government agencies to control the nation’s food supply. Not only is gardening and seed ownership illegal, but fresh food is unheard of by the masses who are fed the processed food groups of Vitees, Proteins, Carbos, Snacks, and Sweeties.
Thirteen-year-old Clare and her brother Dante have escaped to Canada where the old ways still exist. There that they make friends with the roguish Jason and learn the political history of their own country’s decline of freedoms.
Meanwhile, Lily, the friend who was left behind, begins a journey to find the father she never met—a former leader in the ill-fated Seed Savers rebellion of fifteen years earlier. From Florida to the Smoky Mountains, Lily follows the signs in search of her father and is helped along the way by the quirky characters she meets. Not to mention the attractive Arturo who shows up midway to “protect” her.
Heirloom seamlessly weaves the gentle agrarian story of Clare and Dante together with the swiftly-paced adventure of Lily and Arturo. Themes of family, empowerment, and politics meet in this futuristic tale nostalgic for the past. Heirloom is a hopeful dystopia in today’s current sea of post-apocalyptic literature.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"The concept of gardening being an illegal activity in this country is an interesting one, particularly in light of the growing use of processed and genetically modified foods in our diet. The concept becomes even more intriguing when a powerful company begins to systematically eliminate real food from the palates of American citizens.
The dual storylines are intriguing and alternate nicely throughout the book. Lily's story is the more exciting of the two as it involves her being on the run, learning to listen to her gut, trust her friends and learn about herself. Clare's story parallels Lily's in that she learns more about herself as she learns to grow food. They also start discovering boys in a refreshingly innocent way. Both girls work to find their place in the world and in the revolution that they have chosen to participate in.
The book is engaging and keeps up a nice pace. The characters are well-developed and will be endearing to readers. The book unveils secrets nicely and sets up more for the next installment in the series . . . Seed Savers-Heirloom is a satisfying dystopian novel that younger fans of sci-fi will enjoy." --Portland Book Review
"Extremely fascinating. A wonderful book centered on faith, friendship, and independence, it's also a stern warning for people to wake up and pay attention to what's going on today with our food. This is probably the most plausible premise for a dystopian novel I have read yet, (the parallels between Nipungyo and Monsanto are undeniable) and I got so absorbed in the story that I read it all in one sitting. Heirloom is a fantastic book written for MG/YA (though I'm an adult and thoroughly enjoyed it!). It has a lot to teach kids about being strong, the importance of friendships, and standing up for what's right. It even teaches you a little bit about gardening (how cool is that?). If you are looking for a gripping dystopian with a twist, look no further. Highly recommended!" --Epic Book Quest blog
"Seed Savers-Heirloom, even more than the other two in the series, is full of interesting facts about how a society would get from where it was in the 1980's to what it is in Smith's novels. In a time when we are debating GMOs, organics, seeds, and patents, this book is a must have to help middle grade students grasp all the political nuances decisions of today will have on tomorrow. I love that Smith was able to take an intense political topic and weave it into a fascinating (and fun) story."--Andi Klemm, Anakalian Whims blog

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019These books are awesome. When Lily, Clare & Dante find out that their food comes from plants and not just packages, and that there is a rebellion to save fresh food called the seed savers, the kids go on adventures to other places where they can grow food legally. Along the way, they meet new friends, cross paths with spies, and much much more.
I can relate to these stories. When Lily’s love interest knows his way around nature, he clearly has a internal compass. That made me realize that everyone has one, you just have to train it. I love nature, & fresh food means so so much to me.
The story is kind of scary because kids might not know where their food comes from in the future. It is very possible that this will happen. It will most likely happen, since in some ways it is already happening. That is so scary, but that S.Smith realized this & wrote an entire book series about it inspired me to try to make a change by growing my own fresh food. And it can for you too.
I suggest these books to kids who are just starting to read more chapter books to people in the late 60s or 70s for most interest, and also for school teachers & students because these books are very educational. They are great for people who care about the planet, friends and fresh food and like exciting adventure stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2019God bless Canada for being the go to country for Americans fleeing from whatever. You heard talk of it during the last Presidential election, it's present in The Handmaids Tale, and now our young friends are there to learn about gardening in a place with out fear of arrest. Of course there are so many cool discoveries along the way for Lily and Aturo, but Clare and Dante are already there involved in garden school, where they also learn about the history of how it all came to be a life without growing your own food. I shudder when I wonder how much of this is truth or near truth and love that the author included it. It all starts coming together in Ch. 27, Connecting the Dots. James Gardener as the Keeper, Lily and Arturo have met Chief Morningstar and learn that he knows her father. This is the part that gets so exciting because we are picturing what's going to happen next. Back to the title of the book, Heirloom. There are family heirlooms and there are heirloom seeds. Read more about that on p. 51. This Thanksgiving season I am going to reflect on what my heirlooms are, my things with stories. And you can bet some of them revolve around gardening and treasured family memories.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2013I enjoyed the first two of this series and was excited to read this one. It was nice following Dante and Clare in Seed Savers and Lily in Lily. I was expecting for their lives to come back together, but alas they did not. They were each on their own separate paths that were each started by becoming Seed Savers. Both were featured equally, but I feel Lily's story was a bit stronger than Clare's.
Clare and Dante made it safely to Canada and now they are in classes to learn more about gardening, the movement, and plants in general. It was hard for me to follow their story because it seemed to primarily be lectures about how they got to that point-in history and politically. I didn't connect with them as much as I did in their fist installment.
Lily left at the end of Lily and this essentially picks up where it leaves off. It was nice seeing her learn more about herself and realize good things in the world. She is able to connect with people even after the previous betrayals. It did seem to be a pretty happy ending for her which was nice. I feel hopeful that things worked out for her.
Overall it was good. I did enjoy it and flew through it. I wish there were less lectures/history lessons when we follow Clare's story, but that was only a portion of this installment. I do feel that there is more to her story and feel let down we didn't see much growth from her. Lily's story seems to be pretty complete and she did make a complete journey. The plot worked and it is something that could happen in our future. Definitely a series to give a shot!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2019In this third book of the Seed Savers series readers learn that Lily was on the hunt to find her dad. Readers will also learn what Clare and Dante have been doing in Canada. They’ve been assigned to a couple who have been teaching them about vegetables and canning.
In Lily’s travels she meets a couple, Abner and Evelyn who worked for the government and are allowed to grow a garden as long as they don’t sell or share what they produce. They tell her they knew her dad, J.H. Jiminez. She also learned that the Seed Saver network was massive and there was hope that GRIM could be eliminated. As the story of these three kids unfolds the question is will they ever get together with their families again or will they have to continue to hide from GRIM?
Readers who love adventure, mystery and learning about gardening will enjoy this series. The characters are brave and relatable. This what-if world will leave readers pondering what they would do if they were in this situation. This series would be perfect for classroom discussion about secret societies, government overreach, runaways and even breaking the law.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2014Andrea Toren here. Each Seed Savers book has kept me turning pages, wondering what will happen next. While they are fiction, these books are timely, considering the current patenting and control that international corporations are increasingly exerting over the seeds that growers depend on to produce food. The characters are interesting and their story lines are compelling. The only part I don't care for, being grandma age myself, is that the kids have run away and are surviving apart from their mothers. But if you want to have high drama for a kid, going solo (or with a sibling) is a way to get it! Very well written and edited. Although they are written for a much younger audience, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see what will happen!
