Shaded Ember: Wolf Shifters of Norse Lore (The Vargr Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

The belief in the old gods of Norse mythology may have been suppressed by Christianity, but that doesn’t mean the races of old didn’t survive. Like the Vargr wolves.

The Alphas of all meet the battles they’ve risen to take on, but the embers of the story-time bonfire haven’t even settled before one important fact stands clear. One story was not told.

As Matt continues to learn to work with the Völsung born in him, he gathers knowledge, power, and the resources needed to secure the North.

For every battle he meets head-on, another is fought within. If not for Hati’s ember, crying out for his support, Sköll wouldn’t stand a chance.

Pack Alpha Steffen has promised to stand by his pup until whatever lies ahead has been seen through. Doubt whether he’s capable nags him as the pup shows off just how powerful Sköll has risen to become.

Meraki P. Lyhne, real name Martin, is a Danish author spanning multiple genres and pseudonyms. Meraki P. Lyhne mainly writes contemporary paranormal LGBT fiction with various degrees of romantic heat, some with a HEA, some with a HFN, and some with white-knuckling cliffhangers. Mostly, he writes long series with focus on worldbuilding, action, and something epic.

To make sure no one is ever confused about what kind of book they're about to pick up, the surname will guide you.

Lyhne writes gay fiction (with various degrees of heat).

If the surname is mirrored on the cover, it is het-fiction (with various degrees of heat).

If both are on the cover (like the logo), it is bi-fiction (with various degrees of heat).

Other than that, he’s a single dad to a teenage boy, the happy companion to a Rottweiler, and he lives in a very small village next to nowhere.

This is book 7 in the series, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. The author has created an incredibly intricate world. Using the legends of the old Norse gods as the basis. Many would consider a book with 15 to 20 main and secondary characters a full plate. This author has created an entire village/ society. A character you meet over a dozen pages in one book suddenly becomes a key player several books later. Or has an ever increasing roll in future cameo appearances.

There is so much going on that I know subsequent readings of the series ( something I rarely do) will reveal many details I missed the first time around.

The story is fast-paced with plenty of action and incredible characters.

I highly recommend the entire series.

I thought Varg6 was great...but SHADED EMBERS is so far becoming my favorite.
We got to see the Alphas of All rising higher as a team. Matty/Sköll is one helluva warlord and damn good at what he is doing.
We get a fair amount of surprises, and lots of action.well done and fleshed out characters and side chatacters.. and a world building only a certain author masters with top grades...

I can't wait for the next book! I do hope there is more progress on the city by then. Ugh dumb word requirements.

This series is still very good and enjoyable to read. But, from a reader perspective, the lore and storyline has gotten massive and a trifle unwieldy trying to mentally slot everything into place. Matt really has grown into his strength and his ability to balance himself and the needs of everyone is admirable.

Matt wants all the clans to flourish. He has gained information from all and views everyone as equals. History and the present has made Matt yearn for more knowledge. So much is happening, the teamwork of the alphas, the inclusion of the Volsung and Matt’s leadership abilities. There is still plenty of action. This series is amazing, and one that will stay as one of my favorites.

I really enjoy watching Matt continue to develop and grow into the person he's meant to be. The world building absolutely brings the story to life and keeps me coming back for more. This is another fantastic addition to the Vargr series.

I had a suspicion in the last book of where Lyhne was going with his story, but this story still surprised me quite a bit. After the encounter with the Volsung at the end of the last story, Matt upends the Vargr with his actions, basically starting a Volsung pack under his authority with a pregnant Volsung female and her pups.

It's an action that has a lot of ramifications in this novel, and sets the story in motion, as Matt comes to believe that the only way to achieve peace with the Volsung is to help them achieve their goal, the restoration of their ancient homeland. Just as the various races have had their paradigms shifted in the previous entries in the series, so it is in this one as they learn that they must learn to live with the Volsung in order to be successful. But in a sense he must blow up the expectations of all the different societies that he is a part of while he continues to wage war, only now he is trying to gather Volsung onto his side of a unity coalition while still fighting those resistant. A fair number of new characters come to the fore, including Patina and Thorlief, both very interesting.

It's a daring move but makes sense in the context of the series so far, which hasn't been shy about mixing myth and legend with a healthy dose of politics and philosophy. Every time I read one of these books I find myself thinking along with the characters as they reexamine beliefs and viewpoints in light of new information. Even if at times one disagrees with their conclusions, it's a healthy debate and fascinating, nonetheless.

If anything frustrated me about this entry it was just that it seemed to end a bit too soon, in the middle of an overall campaign being waged by Matt/Skoll. I don't know how patiently I'll wait for the next installment, but I suppose wait I must.

Vargr return in the seventh book in this amazing series. Humans may have forgotten about Norse Mythology but circumstances are bringing it back. Matt continues to grow into his role as the legendary Sköll, leaving his Pack Alpha Steffen plagued by doubts. Matt gathers knowledge and backers but with every battle fought, more is coming. He has to fight for Hati who was injured and he finds an usual (to them) way of helping to aid healing. He has the ability to plan and strategize and believes in unity. Preparing to unite everyone will take everyone’s cooperation.

The Alphas of all, Sköll, Hati, Freki and Geri, definitely practice what they preach. They present ideas and listen to ideas. They ask for help and suggestions all the time. This way everyone has a part and a chance to be heard. Matt and his three other Alphas of all are preparing for a uniting run. Among the ideas and speeches, there are some amazing nuggets that we can take away for ourselves. This is an amazing series but it must be read from the beginning. It is well worth your time as it is incredibly captivating. Your emotions will be pulled by many of this rich array of characters in these stories.
