Be ready for the heartbreak and cliff hanger
“No matter how hard we try in life, there is no guarantee of a perfect ending. Living is the greatest adventure there is, and it would be a great shame for you to miss it.” . . This book continues the journey of Dyna and her companions towards Mount Ida. However, before their journey can continue, Dyna has to get free from her captors. If that isn’t enough, the guardians also have to track down Lucenna, deal with the High King’s summons, and cross the Troll Bridge before it’s too late. . . “All my life, I had been searching for something, never knowing what it was…until now. My soul was waiting for you.” . . The character development throughout this book is incredible. Dyna really came into her own and learned to fight for herself. While her time with Tarn wasn’t ideal, he did ensure she was trained to defend herself. Lucenna learned to stop running away and that she could trust Rawn, Zev, Cassiel, and Dyna. No one’s character development was as pronounced as Zev finally coming to an understanding with himself. I also really enjoyed all the plot twists and surprises that were great for keeping me as a reader engaged throughout such a long novel (minus the ending - how could you Beck!!! 😭😭) . . “I know it hurts right now, but whatever you face, good or bad, all of it passes in time. Sometimes life seems like a hopeless and endless storm, but the clouds will part. Don’t give up. Keep going. Keep living. Whatever hardships come, continue onward, even if one day your path veers in a direction you didn’t expect. Everything will be all right. Live. And one day, you will create your own happiness.” . . The only real critique I have of this book is at times it felt a little slow. However, by the end, all of the little details helped to build the larger picture, and you were able to understand why all the extra detail or scenes were necessary. . . “Life will never be easy, but don’t let that stop you from what you want. Even if it seems impossible to reach. For what good are wings without the courage to fly?” . . Before you start reading, make sure you’re mentally prepared. You’re going to laugh, cry, and want to throw something sometimes within the course of a few pages. . . “Where do you find the strength to be this strong?” “We are women. The strength finds us.”

Wow! This is some of the best writing available on Kindle Unlimited. The story is interesting, the characters are richly developed, and the world is complex and immersive.

I LOVED what Beck Michaels was able to do in a longer format and I am so excited to read the next one. The character development for Dyna and what the next book holds for her is so exciting. I love strong and confident FMC’s and Dyna is growing into her power with radical compassion. We will see what the next book holds for her journey….

Just a couple editing issues that I could not figure out how to mark. Nothing at all that took away from the story just some letter swaps that you could read through to understand the meaning. Maybe only 3 or so of those throughout the entire book.

Divided into three parts, Book 3 of The Guardian of the Maiden series picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of Book 2 and the action does not stop for the entirety of the novel.

One of the challenges of epic fantasy is that there is a lot going on in terms of characters and conflicts, and I think Beck has done an excellent job of giving all of her characters compelling storylines with really good growth arcs. Dyna, especially, becomes an even greater FMC, learning more about her magic and her personal strength. Cassiel faces so many trials and surprises, and while a lot of questions from the first two books are answered, there are still plenty of mysteries to be explored as the series continues.

And the romance? Oh. My. Goodness. The slow-burn romance pay-off is almost too hot handle! The content still stays in mostly fade-to-black territory, but seriously, readers will not be disappointed. Dyna and Cassiel experience a lot of individual growth that just fuels their growth as a couple, and their relationship just keeps getting better and better.

Even though Dyna and Cassiel take center stage in this book, the rest of the Guardians are just as present, and with multiple-POV chapters, readers get to see plenty of Zev, Rawn, Lucenna and Von. Readers are going to love Tarn, our resident mysterious villain, AND JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU MEET KLYDE. OH MY GOSH.

Because there is so much that happens in this book, it is impossible to choose a favorite part or scene. I basically loved everything. And I don’t even want to talk about that ending. I believe my exact messages to Beck were, “HOW DARE YOU!” and “I NEED BOOK 4 NOW!”

Shattered Souls is Beck’s biggest and most ambitious novel yet, and she has definitely succeeded in creating an exciting, romantic, action-packed installment for her 7-book series!

I have enjoyed this entire series so far, mainly because of the devotion between Cassiel and Dyna. Therefore, the ending of this book did exactly what the title insinuated and shattered my soul. I felt such anger at what was happening, but maybe that is the definition of a good book when it can elicit strong emotions from the reader.

So I’ll be waiting impatiently for the next book so my soul can recover. Hopefully.

This book had a lot going on. The different viewpoints meant that we learn a lot of back story and feeling from the other characters. Many details that are beginning to pull the story together we’re revealed. Each character has their own story line going, with love interests, history and their reasons for being a part of the Guardians. Beck Michaels did a superb job of pulling all of that in and weaving it together.

SS is book 3 in the Guardians of The Maiden, a NA, multi POV, epic fantasy series. I love this series so much and this book was one of my highly anticipated books of 2022!

SS starts off right where Bonded Fate ends (yes, each book has ended on a cliffhanger). The first half is all "Where Is My Wife?!" and getting to know our villain better. The second half was focused on Dyna's and Cassiel's relationship while diving into kingdom politics.

Now, I gave this 5 stars even though I was big mad at the ending. Just pissed. A couple things has made my thoughts clearer, though. First, time. It's been a week or so since I finished this and my emotions have calmed down. The ending, while shocking and heartbreaking, doesn't change the fact that the rest of the book was fantastic. And two, the Michaels recently posted on IG saying she will not apologize for this ending. Her characters are young and dumb and they will make stupid decisions. And that hit me hard with the Get Over It stick. Dyna and Cassiel are teenagers! I forgot that with everything they've been through and knowing what they will go through.

Read this if you like: Throne of Glass and LOTR, fated mates, The Chosen One, multi POV, journey stories, prophecies, touch her and you d¡e

CW's: kidnapping, violence, death, grief, betrayal

The beginning of this book already had me emotional. The way Beck Michaels can describe such pain in such a way that breaks my heart. The world even to the trees or the earth is described in such a beautiful way. The world and the characters have a depth that is captivating.

In this edition, we get to see Dyna become stronger. In the past books, it was almost as if everyone was taking care of her but she holds her own with determination. It was great to see her character’s growth. She goes through a lot which shapes her to become a character with a hardness by the end of the book.

We also get so many surprises with Cassiel’s past and also get to see a change in his character.

Because of the multiple POVs we also get to see Avon’s story and the other Guardian’s self discovery and overcoming demons.

Can I also say this book is full of action, romance satisfying, tear jerkers, and pain.

This high fantasy series is one of my favorites and Shatteted Souls is by far my favorite read of the year.

Reviewed in Italy on February 28, 2023

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised by the way the story was heading!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2022
I'm not sure whether I liked or hated this book. The story itself was well thought out and you can tell it was preparing the reader for the fourth book. In some ways, this book was more difficult to read. There are scenes that are heartbreaking and at times I felt I couldn't help but feel for the characters. When reading books, I tend to avoid perspectives or storylines relating to the antagonist (I usually find them boring), but I was pleasantly surprised when reading about Tarn and Von's pasts and it put them both in a new perspective for me. I am looking forward to how all of this is pulled together in the fourth book, but I have a feeling it will get harder before it gets easier to read... I do love the main characters, but I'm not sure how I feel about some of them by the end of Shattered Souls.

The only downside I have to this book is the grammatical and editorial errors. Like the first two books, there are numerous spelling mistakes or add/missing words. I was provided with an ARC before reading the official release, so this may have changed half way, but I still noticed errors halfway through the official version and I wonder how so many slip through. Thankfully, it's not so many that you can't even make sense of a sentence.

Alert: Anguish filled ending! This series continues to be fabulous. It’s a lot darker than the earlier ones but is a compelling gritty tale.
There are supposed to be 6 (or 7) books in the series, one to be released every year… so that’s still 3+ years to wait for the finale… I don’t know if I can hold out that long. But the journey is well worth the read.
