Review
The children in my beginners' English class had such fun doing your free skit 'Ready Steady Go!' They were begging me for a skit. 'The Robot' was perfect and so simple to do. It really helped the kids build confidence in their ability to speak English. Thanks for making us look good!Becky Good, Battambang, Cambodia
I did the skit about going on the bus last week and we all loved it! Never have I had so many kids speaking in english so much and so quickly!Tim McGuire, Florence, Italy
The parents were surprised and delighted.
We did our final English show of this education year and we used your short plays. Children enjoyed their roles and we had big applause from parents. We used 'Story Time', 'Quiet Time', 'In the Library' and 'Doctor Doctor'. The parents were surprised and delighted by what I did. Although they couldn't understand us, they didn't get bored, because plays are both short and very enjoyable.
Thanks for everything. Your ideas, ways of teaching a new language and techniques are really very helpful, thank u so much again.

The parents marvel at the kids' confidence during their performance
It has been three years or more since I have been using your materials. They are GREAT and have been producing FANTASTIC results with kids as young as 3 and as old as 18 - or even older!
My success as an English language drama teacher to Czech children is in large part down to YOU and your wonderful plays. I have staged five performances in the past year, and the kids and their parents are ALWAYS delighted. The parents marvel at the kids' confidence during their performance. Not to mention the complex structures they are able to use in a foreign language! Thank you again!!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014I have tried four of these plays so far and they were all a total success with the kids asking to do them over and over again.
I found the skits particularly useful for my mixed ability class where I could give the bigger roles to my better students and group shy ones together for more basic roles. The beauty of it though was that nearly all the kids knew all the lines, and not just their own by the time the play was ready for performance. The success of these skits is down to their simplicity, the phrases that are repeated over and over again, and the touch of humour always present.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2022This book is full of great ideas to use games with ESL students. I would highly recommend this book for anyone working with ESL students. Great and excellent resource!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2014My first comment is that this should obviously have been published in A4 format for ease of copying (it's A5) and with a font large enough to make it legible for children so that they could read it and learn the scripts. Also, keeping individual texts to one or two discrete pages bordered by an attractive motif to give children a visual clue of the theme would have been smart. The first script is highly sexist (the girls chant that they don't want to be astronauts and the boys that they don't want to be dancers.) We're invited to change those themes if we like, but this is the 21st century, such gender stereo-typing should be a thing of the past.
On the plus side if you're teaching British English this is a resource which uses familiar vocabulary for the most part.
There are links to a website which has supplementary materials apparently, though I haven't explored these.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2014This book will help you gain ideas to make children want to speak the language.(even the shy ones and not so young) With all the plays and skits included, you are sure to have a classroom full of children eager to participate in the listening and speaking process of the new language. It will sure make your classroom come alive!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2018Good esl books are hard to come by, so consider yourself lucky if you find this. The skits are great for any level because They start simple and can be made more difficult. I am planning to use these skits for 3rd graders in Japan with upper-beginner English language abilty but would also feel comfortable using these with junior high students as well.
The book has great ideas about how to prepare students and teach them the vocabulary and lines.
As for customer service, Shelley is OUTSTANDING! Very responsive to emails and helpful. Willing to answer questions or quickly resolve issues if any should pop up.
I have bought two of her other books and plan to use them and possibly buy more in the future. Highly recommend to any esl teacher in Japan or the USA.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2013We have had GREAT success at the theatre festival in Prague, the capital of the Czech republic, with some of these sketches. We were given the Spectator's Award yesterday! Thank you very much!

Shelley feel free to use this testimonial for your website.
Here bellow there are some more information about the event and our club:
link of the festival. [...]
English Theatre Club has been working at Elementary School in Mostek since 2005.
We have decided for the show consisting of a series of short sketches in English this year. The performance has originated from "Fun Plays for Children Learning English" published by Shelley Ann Vernon ([...] The performance was named after one of the games Ready, Steady, Go! You can also watch other sketches such as: Red, Yellow, Green, The Robot, The Best Restaurant, ZOO Talk and In the Library. In the performances you can see pupils from the 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th classes. Each of the sketches is focused on practising a particular part of vocabulary or a specific piece of grammar. In The Robot students train parts of the body and greetings, in ZOO Talk parts of the body again and also names of animals and food, in The Best Restaurant they learn how to order a meal in the restaurant, names of the meals and also names of insects. Children play, have fun and so they learn a foreign language naturally.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2018I purchased this book over the summer to prepare for the upcoming school year. I teach drama to 25 different classes once a week. My school is predominantly ESL, these skits are just perfect for my students. Each skit is focused on a different topic which will help my students learn important vocabulary.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017This book has been a joy to use in the classroom and out!
The children love it, even the older ones and its particularly useful for shy children who have never spoken much in the past to feel more confident in speaking whilst playing a role.
The plays are fun and innovative as are all of Shelley's resources. They are simple to use, to build upon and easy to do with little or no props.
Thank you once again Shelley for introducing me to a fantastic and effective way of teaching English!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic asset in the primary classroom
I've used these role-plays with 7-10 year olds - some of them had not had a single English lesson before. Two weeks later they were greeting me in the corridor with "Hello, how are you feeling today?" It felt completely natural. The results have been great with all my groups - the children spend almost the whole lesson speaking English and having fun. It can get a bit loud but as long as they're being loud in English, I don't mind. Even the ones who are reluctant to answer questions or speak in class are much more confident after performing a sketch or two with the classmates.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good.
First time English Teacher here.
It was good, but I felt like it was slightly over hyped. It was the first book I bought and gave me some good ideas, but it didn’t blow me away.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for anybody wanting to make their lessons more fun and really speed up language aquisition at the same time
This book can be used alone or to complement a whole host of other books written by Shelley Vernon. It offers fun plays of varying lengths for young learners . Each play is based on a particular language theme such as colours, animals, shopping etc. You are sure to find something useful for your class. The book is clearly written and easy to follow with lots of advice and handy tips for teachers who are new to creative play work.
An excellent book for both new and experienced teachers who want to liven up their lessons and really get children speaking in English .
