Slaughter Over Sicily: The Airborne Massacre (Forgotten Aspects of World War Two) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 136 ratings

The forgotten story of how one of the biggest aerial assaults in history ended in utter disaster.

Perfect for fans of Max Hastings, James Holland and Alex Kershaw.

Operation Husky initiated the bloody invasion of Italy and was kickstarted by a monumental airborne invasion.

The American 82nd and British 1st Airborne Division were planned to launch four drops of paratroopers, yet they all ended as catastrophes. Friendly fire destroyed aircraft before they even reached their destinations, gliders plunged into the Mediterranean, and paratroopers were dropped hundreds of miles away from their targets.

Charles Whiting draws upon information from many of the participants to provide a vivid narrative of this tragic assault. He uncovers how even from the planning stages the aerial attack was doomed, and it was only through the inspired leadership of those at and below battalion level that more American and British troops did not lose their lives.

Slaughter Over Sicily should be essential reading for all interested in learning more about the catastrophic beginnings of how the Allies invaded Europe in the summer of 1943.

Good book thoroughly enjoyed the way it was written and what it had to say. One puzzle was after all was said and done Who took the blame for the shooting down of all the 'friendliies?'

An interesting and informative book, well written. Like many actions during WW2 the whole truth was kept from the public, usually on the grounds that it would be bad for morale but in reality it seems more likely it was to protect reputations. People do make mistakes which in war leads to lives being lost. Whilst no-one is perfect you would hope that they learn from their mistakes but unfortunately time and time again in all services in all countries it is the leaders, military and political, egos that take precedence over lives.

I've been reading Charles Whiting for years but never managed to get this title. The airborne part of this campaign isn't mentioned much in general history. And it's easy to see why: it was an unmitigated disaster. This book tells you why it was considered, and the build up to the operation. Plenty of details and who did what. A good addition to the history lesson.

Not in the reading as such. No more it is in the tale that is told. Dreadful action causing horrendous casualties and no real lessons learnt.
