Editorial Reviews

Review

I'm a big science fiction fan and the sub-genre of Space Opera is one of my favorites. Solitude's End: Book 1 of Echo's Way by Mike Waller with aliens, space ships, death, and survival did not disappoint. All in all, it's just a good fun read. The main characters, Echo and Ben and the alien Koll, are strong and well developed. The plot is solid and the story kept my attention. I can see many sequels in the future for the Echo's Way series. Very good book, I enjoyed it.

Mike Waller is a multi award-winning author and independent publisher who has written in some form or other for many years in relation to other occupations, and now in the writing of fiction. His books FALCON'S CALL and HAWK: HELLFIRE are B.R.A.G. Medallion Honorees in the genre of Science Fiction for 2019 and 2020, and have won several other awards besides.

Mike is a great believer in the idea that humankind will one day outgrow it's troubled childhood and reach for the stars. His great passion is to explore that possible future, not just from the scientific viewpoint, but from the lives of everyday normal people.

His stories generally feature strong, independent and powerful heroines and heroes, and have strong plot driven storylines with well developed main characters. His inclination is to write science fiction action/adventure stories in the Space Opera and Military Sci-Fi sub genres.

He currently lives in Queensland, Australia (beautiful one day, perfect the next), surrounded by blue sky, warm breezes and green trees (but no aliens, so far).

Really enjoyed this book! Keep writing, please!

Solitude's End is an evil alien holocaust story with the obligatory destruction of a human colony, leaving only one survivor, Echo, an amazingly adaptable woman who survives in the wilds of her home planet for several years before a human military mission arrives to evaluate the alien activity on her home world. The narrative and pacing reminded me of some of Andre Norton's young adult novels about transition to adulthood in a time of trial.

Its a good, readable, but short novel. Some typos slowed the flow ('of' instead of 'off' and similar errors ignored by spell checkers). Transitions from the alien commander's Point of View and back to the survivors' are often abrupt, and could have been avoided by paragraph spacing or a floating asterisk, etc. There are no blatant scientific errors or camouflaged magic cutting corners, but the emphasis is on survival and Echo's acclimation to another person after years of solitude.

Good book. I'm interested to read more in this series.

Liked the story. Well written, nice sci-fi. The book flowed well, Mike Waller's writing brought me into the world he made, and that's what I like in a story. A little light on character development, but it wasn't so much that kind of story. I believe the characters will become better developed in the continuing books in the series. Book one is more an introduction to the characters, storyline and how dangerous the universe may be when we finally really reach out there, and how humans will react. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

I love a well done sci-fi story that stars a string kick-a** heroine. Echo Bourke, the star of Mike Waller’s Echo's Way books, definitely fits that description. I just binge read the first three of these books, Solitude's End, Dark World and Enemy Ally. They are stand-alone stories but need to be read in sequence as the backstory in prior books adds to the enjoyment of each new book. It’s a total riot following as Echo grows from sole survivor on her colony world of Corros after a vicious attack by the alien race Tolleani through her escape to later adventures as she matured into one heck of a wicked warrior and leader. Plenty of twists and turns (especially in the whole premise of book 3) but uniformly excellent writing, great action-fueled plots and truly well-crafted characters. Total enjoyment is virtually guaranteed. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

I cannot in honesty give this novel a fifth star because it's simply not my cup of tea. However, I did find it surprisingly engaging and fresh. Though it does not copy from either genre, it felt like a hybrid of themes from Marsden's "Tomorrow" series and a good grade of romance novel - both in a sci-fi package with hints of mil-spec. Since I like the first and appreciate the qualities of the second, I imagine the novel (and presumably the series) could be enjoyed by fans of either. Writing craft is not brilliant, but fit for purpose.

A solid 4/5, readers with different interests might well rate it higher.

For readers like me who are new to Science Fiction literature, this is a great introduction to the genre. Although it takes place sometime in the future and on another planet (albeit with an atmosphere like that of the Earth), the title character, Echo, is very human and compelling.

Author Mike Waller combines rich botanical and rocket science terminology with credible and quaint neologisms morphed from English, some logically to create new scientific terms, and some innocently, like in Blue Lagoon when Emmeline Lestrange understandably mispronounces San Francisco as San Ferisco. A fitting analogy for the stranded 17-year-old of Solitude’s End.

That’s where the similarities end, however. Instead of children left alone in a strange but benevolent environment, Echo is the sole survivor of an alien attack on the only home she has ever known. She defies all odds and uses her advantage as a native of the harsh surroundings to outsmart the invading aliens, driven by an unwavering hope of being rescued. Not one to give away spoilers, I leave readers to find out who rescues whom.

Suffice it to say, Solitude’s End is a masterfully written futuristic, action, adventure, budding-romance novel not to be missed. I’m looking forward to book 2!

Echo is the sole survivor of an alien massacre. Alone for four years she thinks she is finally rescued when Ben & crew crash land, but they are captured. Ben escapes & during his escape meets Echo.
Echo has to rescue Ben as he is captured again just after fixing up a ship that they can escape in.
I found this novella to be ok but not enough to go on & read the next in the series, nothing awful about it. Just not my cup of tea!
