Spitfire Command: A Fighter Pilot’s Memoir of Fighting from Dunkirk to D-Day (Memoirs of World War Two in the Air Book 1) Kindle Edition
Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, the Channel Dash, North Africa, Sicily, Dieppe, D-Day, and the fight against the V1 menace — Group Captain Bobby Oxspring saw action in many of the most famous battles of the Second World War.
His memoir of time as a Spitfire fighter is the perfect book for fans of First Light by Geoffrey Wellum, Samurai! by Saburo Sakai, and The First and the Last by Adolf Galland.
Beginning in 66 Squadron, by the end of the Battle of Britain, he was already an ace with eight enemy aircraft destroyed: three Heinkel 111s, one Dornier 17, one Me110, and three Me109s. He then went on to become flight commander in No. 41 Squadron RAF and later took command of three more squadrons, leading his men through some of the most ferocious air battles of the war.
His memoir, Spitfire Command, is a remarkable account of life as one of The Few, charting his journey through the war, flying all marks of the Spitfire — from the Mk I to the Mk XIV — right through to when he ended operational duty just a week before the war ended. Written vividly, Oxspring provides an authentic insight into the lives of the men who fought in the air. It is a fascinating and inspiring story of bravery, good humour, and sacrifice.
‘Group Captain “Bobby” Oxspring, DFC and two Bars, was one of that select band of fighter pilots who flew throughout the Second World War, and in his excellent book he writes of the splendid characters he knew in the fighter squadrons.’ Air Vice Marshal ‘Johnnie’ Johnson CB, CBE, DSO (Two Bars), DFC (and Bar), DL

- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2025A true warrior in the sky who survived is years of fighter dog fights. Sprinkled with some Bright humor too boot.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2025I have read a lot of ww2 historical novels. A first person taking you on a tour gives it a whole different spin. The bravery and sacrifice of these pilots is amazing. Reality enjoyed his recounting of the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Story of WW2 flying
Extremely good account from an RAF officer who despite all odds survived the entire conflict from pilot officer to senior rank flying numerous types of aircraft in several theatres of war
Testiment of his ability flying against the cream of the German airforce and coming out on top

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, loved the day to day action that the author experienced.
Easy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars remarkably dispassionate record
Given the amount of action the author saw, his dispassionate recording of his experiences has a degree of logic. How does one go through these experiences and stay sane? Only the ability to remain at arm’s length from the ongoing losses of friends and comrades offers its own explanation. Somehow Oxbring survived both mentally and physically 6 years of action, with periodic intervals, and managed to remission more or less healthy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Authentic account of the RAF heroes
Well written and very readable. Would have given 5 stars but rather too many extraneous details of identification numbers and little known hierarchy figures that I ended up skipping.
