This touching erotic romance by Baker takes place in a paranormal universe where all types of beings live together in harmony and all types of love is accepted without question; highly recommended. -- Library Journal
Connoll Pack
Love sneaks in like a thief in the night.
Danny’s parents raised him to believe his wolf was a curse. He’s part of the wealthy and powerful Connoll Pack, but only nominally. He abandoned that world to volunteer with supernatural kids, and he isn’t looking for a mate….
Max is a shifter who is also a detective. He’s working a case that could make or break his career. Danny’s caught up in the case he’s on, and he’s also irresistible. They’re a bad match—Max, an Alpha having trouble with his new powers and Danny, who trusts Alphas as far as he could throw one. But they can’t get enough of each other, and they might bond before they even see it coming.
They could be amazing together, but they have to get past a few obstacles—especially since someone close to Danny might be involved in the thefts Max is investigating.

About the author

Bru Baker writes sophisticated gay romantic fiction with strong characters, real-world problems, and plenty of humor.
Bru spent fifteen years writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now balances her time between writing and working at a Midwestern library in the reference department. Whether it’s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else’s, there’s no denying that Bru is happiest when she’s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2023Just the most perfect M/M shifter romance. Plenty of family drama, pack drama, romance drama, and plot drama to keep you interested in the story. A little bit of insta love, if you hate that trope, but it was played so well that it was really believable and beautiful to watch these two people find each other. Also loved how normal the LGBTQ relationships were treated. There wasn't even a mention of coming-out, or even characters talking about sexuality. It was just not even part of the story. Some people were LGBTQ and some were not. Refreshing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2023An interesting storyline, built around an existing shifter worldview, supported by good character development and a decent plot. Ends on a promise for a future HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2023Overall pretty cutesy, but so much happened off page. The majority of the relationship development was told through recap in scenes that didn’t really feel important enough to read about—like I don’t need to read a whole scene about stakeouts and how Max’s partner has smelly farts, it makes more sense to actually show Max and Danny getting to know each other; it made the relationship/chemistry feel very forced. Also the words “alpha” and “mate” were used in like very paragraph, felt like author was trying to convince me instead of just saying how it is.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2019A little different spin on shifters. Not MPREG. And the focus is more on the characters and the developing relationships.
Really well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019This is the 4th book in this series by Bru Baker, though it’s the first book that doesn’t take place at Camp H.O.W.L. itself. This is also the first book that mentions paranormal characters (they are referred to collectively as “Supernaturals”) other than Werewolves. The publisher’s website lists this book as being both Book 4 in the “Camp H.O.W.L” world and book one in the “Connoll Pack” series – so I suspect that Bru may be starting an offshoot series. At any rate, in this book we learn that there are witches, and various types of fairies, as well as other magical beings. In this book any shifter that isn’t a werewolf is referred to simply as a shifter. The various different types of Supernaturals know about each other, but humans are NOT in the loop and it needs to STAY that way.
Max is a detective with the NYPD. He’s investigating a series of burglaries, a series which appears to be escalating in both audacity and willingness for hurting anyone who gets in the way. It’s probably the biggest case of Max’s career so far. He’s begun to suspect that that the crimes are being committed by Supernaturals, but of course he can’t tell anyone that since humans don’t know that Supernaturals exist. We learn roughly one-third to one-half of the way through the book what kind of shifter Max is and even further on we learn exactly what Max’s role in his pack is. Since both of those things play into how the relationship between Max and Danny unfolds, I’m not going to tell you. But Max IS a shifter, and while Danny doesn’t know what type of shifter Max is, Danny is aware right from the start that Max isn’t human. Max is likewise aware that Danny is a werewolf.
Danny is a werewolf. He went through his Turn during the first full moon after his 19th birthday. He’s part of Alpha Connoll’s pack, a pack that is large and powerful, and is known as being a good pack. Of course, even the best pack can have bad seeds, and unfortunately for Danny his parents are definitely bad seeds. Danny’s parents are wealthy, greedy, selfish, emotionally abusive, and believe that their wolf half is a family curse – almost like it’s an unfortunate genetic mutation that gets passed from generation to generation. Danny was raised with the expectation that he would one day take over his father’s real estate business – never mind what Danny wanted or what his passion was. Danny’s childhood taught him to respect authority and the hierarchy of the pack, but at the same time he SERIOUSLY distrusts it. Alpha Connoll is a good alpha, but he’s not omnipotent. Danny has had to deal with things pretty much on his own for most of his life.
Danny was to all extents and purposes disowned when he used the trust fund left him by his grandmother (which dear old mom and dad had no control over) matured at Danny’s 21st birthday. Why was Danny pretty much kicked to the curb? Because instead of doing what he was expected to do Danny started a foundation for Supernatural kids that wound up in the foster system. Since the only Supernaturals who don’t have their full abilities until adulthood are the werewolves, being a Supernatural kid in a human world has extra challenges. Danny’s foundation works to identify foster kids that might not be human, and finds ways to get them the extra support they need without their paranormal abilities getting found out.
In chapter one of the book Danny discovers that his apartment in Brooklyn has been broken into. Max, through a misunderstanding on Danny’s part, is the first NYPD officer to respond and take the initial reports about the break-in. Neither realizes right from the start that Danny’s burglary is in fact part of the series Max is investigating, but Max puts things together based on certain factors about the crime scene. Max, being a shifter himself, also realizes how emotionally cut-off Danny is and knows that it’s not healthy. Max is drawn to Danny in way that he doesn’t understand, and isn’t entirely comfortable with.
This story is a bit It was different from the other Camp H.O.W.L books. While characters from previous books are mentioned or make cameos, neither Danny or Max have any real direct connection to them. The story really IS just about Max and Danny. Book one of the series establishes the back story as to what Camp H.O.W.L is and how werewolves are basically human until 19. Beyond that though, this book really could be a stand-alone since you don’t have to know who the other previous characters were for the story to make sense. If this is actually the first book in an offshoot series based on the Camp H.O.W.L books, that makes a lot of sense.
Max and Danny both have hiccups and hang-ups that affect them getting together. Never fear though, since Max and Danny both seem to decide early on that it’s worth whatever bumps there might be in the road. After all, this is a work from Bru Baker, so HEA (or at the very least HFN) pretty much a given.
Bottom line – 4.5 stars out of 5, rounded up to 5. If you ask why only 4.5 stars, the answer is this – I wanted MORE. This could have been the length of War and Peace and I’d have been just as happy with it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2019I was given this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is set in the Camp HOWL world and although it's a stand-alone book, it adds to the HOWL world. I really like being able to see more of the world outside of Camp HOWL and getting to see how supernaturals in the real world deal with things. It's not always easy, especially for teenagers, and it can be dangerous.
I really liked Danny as a character. His parents tried to control his life, although he's nearly 30, and he's given up his family money and status to do what he loves, helping teenage supers that are troubled and can't find a good home. He works hard with his foundation, cares a lot about every kid and will give up everything just to make sure the kids end up with a happy life. This can, of course, come back to bite him in the backside.
I like Max as a character too. He's struggling, trying to come to grips with being made the Alpha of his pack and then he meets Danny and things go even more out of control for him. He has to fight his instincts because he knows that, that could chase Danny off and he wants, needs, him in his life. He also has to balance his job as a cop and his very large, boisterous, loving family and pack. It's not easy but he's managing and when he falls for Danny, he realizes that he has someone in his corner now that he can rely on.
Things aren't easy for the two. Danny's father is someone that you really dislike, and for good reason, and you fall in love with Max's family and want to be a part of them. Danny and Max make a good couple, strong where the other needs it, letting the other be strong when they need it. The only thing is that this happens so fast, you have to wonder if they really can call it love since they've really only known each other a few days. Granted, the author does have a good explanation for it, but I really wish authors wouldn't use insta-love in their stories. I like watching the characters fall in love over time, figure things out, try to make things work for each other. Insta-love seems to bypass all the hardship that a real relationship goes through.
Even still, I do really like watching Danny and Max together. They really look out for each other and both of them are strong even when the other isn't around, which is always nice to see. The tension that happens is good, though it seemed to get resolved a bit too fast, but it was still worth seeing Danny learn to fight back against his father and stand up for himself more.
Overall, this is a really good story and a nice addition to the series. I hope the author continues writing in this world, I really want to see more of the supernaturals, maybe a story that doesn't involve shifters? It'd be fun to see something involving selkies or some of the other kinds of supers.
