Stone Wings: An M/M Paranormal Fake Boyfriend Monster Romance (The Gargoyles of Arrington Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,063 ratings

His curse can only be lifted with true love, but can true love come from a fake date?

Being the personal assistant to a trio of cursed gargoyle brothers who sleep for a hundred years and wake up for twenty-five wasn't a career proposed by Josh's high school guidance counselor, but it's a job that he’s eminently suited for. Not to mention a job his family has been doing for generations. The brothers are truly excellent bosses, but Josh is surprised when Drew offers to pretend to be his date for his high school reunion. And even more surprised by a supposedly fake kiss that feels as real as a kiss can get.

Drew and his brothers owe Josh and his family for watching over them each time they turn to stone for a hundred years, and for helping them reintegrate into the world when they wake up. The least he can do is pose as Josh's boyfriend for a night. Even though true love can break his curse, he knows he won't find it with Josh. Nothing that real can come from a lie. Or can it?

When the fake boyfriend situation stretches into two nights, and then more, Josh and Drew can’t fight the attraction blazing between them. There's no harm in exploring it, right? No expectations. But when paranormal danger comes to Arrington, Josh and Drew are going to have to battle for every moment of peace…and maybe a real happily ever after too.

STONE WINGS is a 50,000 word male/male paranormal romance featuring a mechanic who happens to have wings and is a literal monster in bed, a personal assistant who's always had a crush on him, stone skin or not, and a relationship that's going to take a leap of faith to give the fairytale a happy ending.

Three gargoyle brothers have been cursed to 100 years of sleep and 25 years of awakening. Their only hope of removing said curse to find true love. Three of the five brothers still suffer from this curse. Odhran had lost his gargoyle life by being destroyed while Finnian had found true love with Elizabeth. The major curse of finding true love was the loss of immorality. And this is the unique aspect of this series' theme. Stone Wings tells the tale of gargoyle Drew and the trio's caretaker Josh. Both have feelings for the other but each is reluctant to capitalize on those feelings. That is until Josh gets the announcement of his class reunion. Drew volunteers to step up to the task. As a consequence, Josh runs into his bullying ex "Brandon" and Drew defends Josh against Brandon's ever present bullying tactics. What I liked about this theme is that though Drew and Josh find each other, the sacrifice Drew makes for love is genuine.

Stone Wings is the first book in The Gargoyles of Arrington by Jenn Burke. A paranormal romance following three brothers cursed to be gargoyles till they find their one true loves.

Josh was a sweetheart and who fell easily and wore his heart on his sleeve. I loved his relationship with the brothers as a whole, with his parents and his best friend. Drew fell a little flat for me, but I still enjoyed him. Together they were cute though, and I loved how protective Drew was of Josh. I was pleasantly surprised by the steam in this one after Jenn Burke's previous series was on the much lower end of the steam scale. The intimacy between them is monster lovin' goodness, with the unique attributes of Drew in his stone form being highlighted.

Unfortunately I do I wish their powers had come more into play. Drew can literally manipulate metal, and he only does it once to crumble up a blade. If they were going to each have unique abilities attached to their curse, then highlight them. Otherwise they seem like an afterthought. It just seemed like a missed opportunity and I hope the other brothers actually use their powers more than Drew did.

Overall, Stone Wings by Jenn Burke was a solid start to a new paranormal series. I'm already attached to the other brothers and I am excited about the next book. I already have an idea of whom the final brother will be paired with and if I'm right it will be a great pairing. A set of quality main characters and lovable side characters set in a world with curses, magic , shifters, and witches. Drew and Josh's romance has the fake relationship trope, with a friends to lovers undertone, delicious steam, plenty of cuddles, and embracing their emotions.

I think I'm going to really enjoy this new series. I'm a sucker for gargoyle books, and I haven't seen many (if any?) MM gargoyle books so I was really excited when this one popped up. I enjoy that it has a pretty big overarching plot that seems like it will take it through the whole series, while focusing on one brother and their love interest per book. It was a solid start to a fun new series, and I'm excited to read the next one when it comes out.

The premise of the book is quite interesting, and the story isn't awful. I have a tendency to want things spelled out and explained; not a fan of odd things that happen "just because." How exactly does a 500 year old man with no current identity becaome a police officer? I know there's mention of a name change, but is it the responsibility of Josh's family to procure documents for the brothers? I know, I know, It's fiction lady, lay off. But this bugs me. I'm also sad that breaking the curse reverts the brother to a full-on human, frail and breakable. At least let them retain their ability to become stone for safety, especially if they are engaged in battle with a scary witch. With all that being said, it's still worth a read, and I will be reading the rest of the series, because I absolutely have to know what happens next.

Yay! A series by Jenn Burke and its got gargoyles! It does have other PNR folks, shifters, fae but the main characters are gargoyles and humans except for a handful are oblivious. Love it! And this series will be definite than the last two, a different relationship each book with an over arcing mystery/suspense. So the story goes several centuries ago, five brothers were cursed into gargoyles, "sleeping" for 100 years, "awake" for 25 years. The only way the curse can be broken is true love (Beauty and the Beast/Sleeping Beauty, anyone?). One brother has found true love, many years ago. Another brother was destroyed while sleeping. Josh's family have watched over the gargoyles while sleeping and serving as PA's while they are awake. So there's a lot of world building in this first story but it does not bog it down. Drew and Josh's story is up first and it's lovely. Come on, we all know how it will end but the journey is so wonderful. Josh and Drew struggle with the fact there's a definite deadline on their relationship. Josh watching Drew sleep as a gargoyle, Drew knowing Josh will not be there when he wakes, I can't imagine! In bewteen this, we get sexy times, scary times with mountain lion shifters and a crazed fae, alliance making with wolf shifters, fun times with the brothers. Based on the last chapter, Rian's story is next. And it should be good!

Hard, soft, tender, sweet, wishful, sad, and oh so lonely.

Three gargoyle brothers are looked after by Josh. The brothers were cursed decades ago and are forced to sleep for extended periods of time (100 years) after which they are only awake for a few years (25). Their only chance at breaking the curse is to find their true love.

When a gang of bikers ride into town and begin to wreck havoc on their small idyllic town, Josh and Drew are forced to confront their feelings for each other, and maybe they have a chance of an HEA!

All those Disney movies have nothing over on this romantic tale.

Good start to this series introducing the 3 gargoyle brothers cursed to sleep every 100 years.
Josh is a sweet small town guy who is proud of his job and life working as the brother’s PA even after being repeatedly shamed by his peers for not having the right ambitions.
Drew is a interesting mix of protective/ laid back living in the moment. a
Always in the back of his mind is the deadline of his curse. They work well together as we learn more about the brothers the curse attached to them and the beginning of a story arch that’ll hopefully continue in book two. Liked having a different kind of paranormal. Enjoyed and will reread.

5.0 out of 5 stars This has it all! Fake dating, gargoyles, and mysterious curses!
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2023
Fake dating is one of my favourite romance tropes, while gargoyle MCs are totally new to me—this book appealed as soon as I saw the cover! I loved the mixture of blood family and found family with the eventual reveal of all the details of the curse—along with the added uncertainty of not being quite sure if everything was still the same this time around. There was plenty of drama and external forces along with two (sometimes dumb) boys figuring out what they really felt for one another. A fun, action-packed read.

Another winner by Jenn Burke, and a great start to a new series. The main characters are very likeable with plenty of interesting supporting characters … lots of potential storylines to explore! I admit the premise was odd to me at first, but once I learned the back story it was really quite fascinating.
    I really enjoyed this one.

    - etc ....
Aucun cliché ne nous est épargné. Je ne lirai pas la suite.

Fun shifter romance with a difference.

3 brothers, cursed to be gargoyles, awakening for 25 years at a time knowing that finding love is the only way to break the curse. And their human PA that looks after them, as his parents did before him.

This was a really fun read and the gargoyle aspect makes it stand out from the sea of shifter books.

✨ MM romance with some spice
    ✨ Gargoyle shifters
    ✨ Werewolf shifters
    ✨ Supernatural age gap

    ✨ Friends to lovers
    ✨ A fae curse
