The Story Keeper: Weaving the Threads of Time and Memory, A Memoir (Holocaust Survivor True Stories) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 171 ratings

A story ultimately without a time and ultimately without a place. It’s a memoir of families across generations of peace and of war, of homes that become lost and hopes that are kept, and a belief in a future that’s better than the present.

The book is a compelling and exhilarating experience exploring the threads of times now long gone and the memories that arose from them to generate the stories that lived on. In each family, a fundamental life event spawns ripples that sweep across time and generations that would fade forever without exploration and would otherwise shed all meaning. The key event in many lives is making the decision to leave home forever and to strike out not knowing if it leads to disaster or to a future and a better place. So many today around the world face the same uncertain decision – to stay or to go.

About the Author

Joe Barrett, an actor and Audie Award and Earphones Award-winning narrator, has appeared both on and off Broadway as well as in hundreds of radio and television commercials.

Fred Feldman was born near Baku, Azerbaijan, as his family was fleeing from the German army during World War II. After the war, as Holocaust survivors, they eventually escaped the Soviet Union, to refugee collection centers in Poland, and were transferred to several displaced persons camps in Austria, where they remained for three years trying to obtain visas to immigrate to the United States. He arrived at age seven with his family in the United States, unable to speak English, and went through public school systems from kindergarten through high school. Fred attended the University of Chicago as an undergraduate and Purdue University where he received a PhD in biochemistry. From the time Feldman was a child, he developed a passion for collecting stories and photographs of his extensive and exceptional family history. As an adult, and while fully engaged in his professional activities, he conducted myriad interviews of survivors and his family, and extensively documented all their photographs and history. Since retirement, he has produced a four DVD video documentary of his family's history and used that material as a basis for writing his book. While there are a number of historical fiction books describing events of this era, there are few authors remaining that survived these experiences that can describe them with such detail and veracity and relate them to current times. While he could have grown up to be a goat herder in Azerbaijan, his progression from those horrible times to becoming a top scientist adds an interesting and unusual thread to his story. Beyond expectations from his unique beginnings, Dr. Feldman worked in the pharmaceutical industry for thirty years, becoming a senior vice president and chief science officer with global responsibilities, and chairing an international world-class scientific advisory board. He has been invited and participated in industry conferences as a keynote speaker and presented in venues around the world.

This story changed how I teach and how I see love
This story resonates very deeply for me and my students spanning several years. I connected with the Feldman family by chance, and have gained personal insight to a story of hope, faith, and love. Mr. and Mrs. Feldman’s Holocaust story cards inexplicably find each other every year in my classroom during a lesson where I make the card pair ups as random as humanly possible. My students understand the depth of the horrors of that time, but also the hope in fellow man because of this story. This is a story that should be a staple in any history classroom. I am honored to be included in the ending of this book. Please check out this story for yourself and see how it uplifts you!

As a Jewish psychiatrist, part of my work is aiding my patients in helping them navigate life-altering decisions. In this absolutely talented piece of work written by Fred Feldman, he artfully explores the hardships, heartbreak, and set-backs of his family and their drive for survival despite all the difficulties placed in their path. A most inspiring story, and highly recommended during these trying times of which we must continue to be persistent and prevail.

Think of the music of Scheherazade of the Thousand and One Nights as you read the improbable, but true, stories of this family facing the terrors unleashed by the Holocaust, but always filled with the hope of survival and the dream of ultimately finding a time and a place that they could, once again, find home. The author skillfully weaves his stories within stories, of times within times, of loss of place and home, of danger and striving, of migration across vast distances, of always new beginnings. This is an epic tale, yet memoir, faced by one family, yet reminiscent of the stories of many displaced peoples today across the globe. The central theme, of remembrance, of family and unbroken ties across generations, warms your heart and gives you hope that today’s broken world can still be put back together.

I purchased this as a gift to my aunt. Her review follows:

Fred Feldman's The Story Keeper was a deeply thoughtful gift to me from my niece. Her father and his brother, my late husband, having lived through the emerging rise of Nazi Germany until their early teens, were rescued with their parents, arriving in England just three days before the war with Germany was announced from Buckingham Palace. With different details, this memoir tells the story of the Feldman family's journey to freedom.
I read with great admiration the amazingly researched details andlovingly saved pictures of Fred's family's wrenching circumstances fleeing from Sokolow, Poland to save their lives. With great persistence
over many years, he pulled their story together, chronicling how
finally after several harrowing years they were able to reach a
Displaced Persons camp near Vienna, prior to emigration that took them
    to South Bend, Indiana.
The thread of the story continues with the success of the young
family members through great determination and tremendous achievement.
It is a testament to what survivors from Nazi Germany were able to
    accomplish in America.
Fred Feldman's memoir is especially relevant today, when currents
of Nazi sentiments and white supremacy groups can tear a country apart.
The message of survival, determination and resilience are inspirational.
The book is especially relevant at this turbulent time in our country's
present turmoil. It is a journey through a family's personal history
that resonates with a message of hope for the future from the
devastation that can bring a country to disaster. Phyllis Heilbronner,
    Durham, N.H.

The Story Keeper is a readable and engrossing story about Fred's family from Sokolow to South Bend Indiana and beyond. Like many families around the world, they had to make the painful choice of whether to stay or to leave everything behind and go toward an uncertain future. This family's journey is told with love and sensitivity as their transformation evolves.

As a genealogy buff and Holocaust/WW2 history enthusiast, this book covers both areas in excellent detail. I felt the author uses common threads of the Feldman family tied together in many different ways, including chance meetings, decisions made and the value of faith and hard work. Truly a wonderful read!

This is a true story of a family escaping Poland when the Nazi's annexed the country. The author, Ephrayim, was born as far away as Azerbaijan where the family fled keeping just ahead of the Germans. After the war a slow return back to their land but now displaced. Eventually they arrive in USA. The author researches what happened to the families left behind who perished. A real tragedy.

The writer's parents fled Poland to Azerbijan, where Fred was born, to escape the Nazis. From a Displaced Person camp in Austria, they began anew in the US after a cousin sponsored them. The writer spent his "retirement" years ferreting out the "real" story of varioius family members' histories and gathers them into a rich multi-layered story - told in a video-documentary as well as finally a book. His empathy with the struggles of today's refugees fleeing for their lives in many places throughout the world point to the deep humanity and decency of Fred Feldman.
