Archer

The year began great for me.

Became the starting quarterback for an NFL team - check.
Secured a multi-million-dollar contract - check.
Moved to LA and lived the glamorous life - check.

What could possibly cause me any issues?
Oh yeah, one more thing. I'm gay.

I was outed a couple of years ago to my former team and my family, but it hasn't been made public knowledge yet. Well, that is, until now. I'll be known as the first LGBTQ+ active player in the league's history. And if I stick to the conditions of my contract, it won't be a problem. The thing is, I'm not really a guy known for playing by the rules.

Most people think of my personality as the three B's: bold, brash, and blunt. My mouth has gotten me into more predicaments than I can count. Even my best friends have told me I'm stubborn as a mule and have the delicacy of a bull in a china shop. This presents a big problem for me because I have my eyes set on winning over the guy who stole my heart years ago, only he doesn't know it yet.

Getting his attention is going to be challenging. It's a good thing I'm tenacious.
Unfortunately, it's not great timing and could get me into a whole mess of trouble.
Why does falling for a guy need to be anyone's business but mine?

Kai

The past couple of years were a whirlwind of activity. My career took off after my guest shot appearance in Americana. I appeared in a few indie features and finally got a shot at my first major motion picture release. The work came as a great distraction from my personal life, which took a further nosedive after I found out the guy I was falling for had already fallen for someone else.

Why should I be surprised? He was another in a string of failed relationship attempts. I swore I wouldn't get involved with anyone else, choosing to stay focused on my career instead. That is, until the force of nature known as Archer McMillan came storming into my life.

To be the pursued instead of the pursuer was not in the cards. To top it off, he's everything I'm not. Yet, there's something to be said for a guy who can make you laugh when it's the last thing you want to be doing. I'll admit he's got a playful and determined spirit. Archer also has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I've ever known. Not the mention the cute way he… Hold on. What am I doing? We cannot be a thing. Nope. Not gonna happen. Ever. Right?

***

Follow Kai and Archer as they cross the lines as friends, partners-in-crime, and confidants, to discover a love beyond boundaries that needs no definition.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

T.L. always hated math, so it was a good thing she had a way with words. Since she was a shy and quirky kid; words were her best friends. She would imagine entire worlds in her head and talk to herself endlessly. Her mother wondered if she was speaking with ghosts for a while.

Her older sister was a voracious reader of trashy romance novels and would pass them down to her after she had finished them. T.L. was the only 10-year-old kid sitting in class reading "The Stud" by Jackie Collins during reading time. Oddly enough, she never got called out on it.

As she grew older, her tastes evolved, but one thing held fast; her undying attachment to love stories. One day out of the blue, she decided to write the love stories she always wanted to read instead of searching for her story. Since then, writing has been a dream fulfilled for her and she could not be happier.

She enjoys writing about love, regardless of gender and is a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community.

T.L. calls the Pacific Northwest her home and enjoys the quiet rural life of her little oceanside home with her playful/crazy husband and their giant dog Noah.

The romance is fun, kind of angsty, and the dancing is hot.
This is my first foray into the “The Young American” series. I really enjoyed it. The secondary characters are interesting and are a mix of rainbows. The romance is fun, kind of angsty, and the dancing is hot. StrangeLove can be read as a standalone. I received a free copy of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

StrangeLove is the third book in The Young Americans series. It can be read as a standalone, but it does follow closely from the events that occurred in books one and two. The first two books focused on another couple, Josh and Noah, and the main characters in this book were side characters in those two books. This book has a happy for now ending, but the overall plot has not been completely resolved. The two main characters, Archer and Kai, are together so there is a lot of romance and steamy moments. Unlike the first two books, I didn’t think this book was as angsty or as much of an emotional rollercoaster, which I really appreciated. There was still angst and drama, but it didn’t feel overdone. I really liked how Archer’s character really showed some personal growth and development without changing into a completely different person. He still had all the wonderful qualities that I fell in love with him for, but he did start to show a more mature side. I feel like we are still getting to know Kai – this book hinted that there was a lot of issues Kai was keeping hidden – and I suspect the next book in the series is where we will see Kai’s own growth.

The audiobook was narrated by Corey H. Benson and he did a pretty good job. I was impressed with how he kept so many character voices distinct and different from each other. The audiobook production was nicely done.

2.5 stars rounded up and all of them are for Archer.

Despite the fact that the writer goes out of her way (or so it seems) to make Archer McMillan appear to be a mostly foolish, often arrogant, and totally unsophisticated country bumpkin, I rooted for him from the beginning. Everyone else at one time or another, and some people ALL the time, take potshots at him, attack him, scorn and sneer at him, and generally do their best to make him feel like hell. Archer has to fight for every scrap of acceptance, affection, and friendship from everyone in his life aside from Chloe and Josh.

In general, I dislike most of Josh's "friend circle" as much as they dislike Archer, who is only there because of his connection to Josh. They barely tolerate him and use every chance they have to reiterate how little they care for him. Josh's husband Noah has my special irritation and even though I know there are things I don't understand about this story, I'm not really interested in reading the first two to find out why he's such a huge jerk to Archer. He's just awful, and if he can find someone to tolerate his awful behavior, Archer at least deserves the same chance.

Kai Anderson leaves me mostly cold, sadly. To each his own, so Archer gets to love who he loves, but it certainly takes Kai long enough to decide he's willing to take a chance on Archer. What could have been a really powerful story of interracial love became a tedious back-and-forth between a guy longing for acceptance and love and the chance to be himself openly and a guy with trust and commitment issues. Archer isn't perfect by any means, but he's not the terrible risk that even Kai's mother and grandmother want him to think he is. Not that Archer's family is any better; in fact, both their families are quite awful. I hate that Kai takes so long to fully believe in Archer. I understand and empathize with the difficulties they both face in having a relationship with each other, but I can't help but feel sad for Archer, who starts the story with a handicap that just seems to get larger throughout the novel., because EVERYONE dumps on him almost ALL THE TIME.

PS I REALLY don't get how some of what these young people say to or about each other in the name of "just kidding" is funny in any way. Must be my advanced years...

Kai and Archer captured my heart. I need to know the next part of their journey together. This story touched on many emotional issues. I would love to see their story in a movie. This is a special series. It started out good and keeps getting better.

    3.5 Stars

So, StrangeLove had some things I really liked and others I didn't like so much. I found the paying a bit odd for me, sometimes I felt the story was dragging and other times it was full steam ahead. It is a long audiobook, at over 14 hours, I'm not sure if it would have been better to read it myself, the narrator did an ok job but there were many times I didn't know who was talking as they all started to sound the same.

There were a lot of themes that the author has tried to put into this story, racism, homophobia, bi-racial relationships, the plight of coloured people, and more sometimes I felt like it was all a bit too much.

I liked Archer a lot, and Kai, well I liked him some of the time and others I didn't like the way he treated Archer.

As for their friends, they came across as a lot younger than they were and I can't say I was a fan of any of them, though Josh and Noah were the best of the bunch and the guy (whose name escapes me) who was crashing with Kai grew on me by the end of the book.

I really liked the romance and the growth of the relationship between Archer and Kai and I really hope things work out between them, there is another book coming that I will need to read to see how their relationship turns out.

I love this series and completely enjoyed this book. Kai and Archer were total opposites. Archer is such a big-hearted guy who was treated poorly by a lot of people that it was heart breaking at times. Kai was so stand-offish and reluctant about starting a relationship with Archer that it made it hard to truly like him at first. I don’t think that it’s necessary to read the first two books in this series, but I highly recommend doing so as they are really well done.

Listened on Audible. I didn’t care for either of the MCs at first, but they grew on me as the book went along. I did not realize it was NOT a HEA, and there were some kinda major things left unresolved that I guess will be addressed in the next book? Overall I liked it, but not sure if I will continue to follow the series.
