Stubborn as a Mule (The Sex and Sweet Tea Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 492 ratings

Down in Whynot, NC, there are three things that hold true: 1) life moves just a little bit slower, 2) family means everything, and 3) you don’t mess with history.

When his family decides to sell a home that’s been part of their history for over a century, Lowe Mancinkus is madder than a hornet. To add insult to injury, the woman who purchased it is some fancy pants, city girl looking to fix it up and sell it off. Doesn’t matter that she’s sexy as hell or that just being near her gets his blood racing like never before. That home belongs to his family, or at least it did until she came to town.

Well that just won’t do, now will it?

From the moment that she laid eyes on the historical home in rural North Carolina, Melinda Rothschild knew Mainer House was something special. The perfect escape from life in New York City, Melinda signed the papers and set to work restoring the house to its natural beauty. That is until an angry Lowe showed up on her doorstep one day. With a scowl on his handsome, chiseled face. And a shotgun in his strong, muscular arms.

Is it getting hot in here?

Melinda’s about to get a lesson on life in the south, but Lowe is about to learn a lesson of his own – this city girl doesn’t back down from a fight.

SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!!

SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!!
I finally met Author Sawyer Bennett's alter ego, Juliette Poe, and oh was this a different side of Sawyer! Where Sawyer Bennett's books are hot and heated, Juliette Poe's are more sensual, soft, and slow. Juliette Poe's latest sensation transports you to the sweet, small-town South where tradition, history, grace, manners, and more rule. Stubborn as a Mule is SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!! Beautiful Meli is a wealthy New Yorker relocates to a small North Carolina town to chase down her past and slow down her life. I loved her smartness and sass! Meli never thought she'd encounter a roadblock and very unwelcoming party in the form of hot, Southern man candy, Lowe. I could not help but chuckle at their heated and humorous banter. Meli and Lowe are Yankee ice meets Southern heat who MELT together! What's not to like about a man who shuts a woman up with his lips? These opposites can't help but attract, and oh did connection ignite like fireworks! "What are you interested in?" "Not what," he says without pausing in his stride or looking back at me. Yet, his words are meant only for me as he adds on, "Who." Lowe, this Southern gentleman, made me both blush and swoon! I LOVED Lowe!!! I could not help but read his lines with a Southern accent, one way stronger than my slight one. Stubborn as a Mule SWEPT ME AWAY! I LOVED the softer side of Sawyer Bennett writing as Juliette Poe. ENCHANTING and ENDEARING, this love story is the perfect Summer romance! Stubborn as a Mule is a SLOW BURN of SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!! This Southern gal approves!!! ❤️ "I don't question what we've got, only what we're going to do with it. And I'm here to tell you, we're going to do something with it."

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read STUBBORN AS A MULE, because I knew it was going to be about Lowe and I really disliked him in the previous book. He was rude, bitter and angry, and I just couldn’t see him redeeming himself. Well, it doesn’t happen very often, but I’m happy to say that I was wrong. Very wrong. Once you get inside his head and hear why he was so upset, it is very easy to understand and forgive his behavior. I ended up liking him a lot, especially his sense of humor.

I can’t say much about Melinda, other than the town (including Lowe) judges her a little unfairly simply because she’s an outsider with money. She can be just as stubborn as Lowe, which was why their relationship was so volatile in the beginning. Despite their rocky start, they were both able to quickly calm down and act like grown ups, and I liked watching their affection for each other grow. I loved Morris D—Melinda’s gay, drag queen best friend—and the pranks between him and Lowe were hilarious.

STUBBORN AS A MULE is a very quick and enjoyable read, and I loved how the first chapter really drew me into the story and the battle between Lowe and Melinda. If you’re looking for a steamy read, you won’t find it here because all the action happens behind closed doors. My only complaint is that the conflict towards the end was easily predicted at the halfway mark, so I spent the rest of the book hoping to be surprised, but ultimately not.

STUBBORN AS A MULE is told not just in Lowe’s and Melinda’s POV, but also in the POVs of several of Whynot’s residents, which gives a little extra kick to the story. While it’s part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone as it comes with a HEA for Lowe and Melinda. I’m looking forward to reading BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE, the next book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series.

Stubborn as a Mule (Sex & Sweet Tea #2) by Juliette Poe
    4 stars!!!

“I am not, however going to make this a pleasant experience for Miss Rothschild…I’m not going to make this easy on her.”

I love Sawyer Bennett and have totally fallen in love with her alter ego, Juliette Poe. Juliette Poe is the lighter, softer side to Sawyer Bennett’s writing and with this series has delivered some honest, real, swoon worthy romances and Stubborn as a Mule is no different. After reading the first book in this series, Ain’t He Precious, I was already intrigued with Lowe Mancinkus and knew that his story would undoubtedly be a good one, and it was. With small town folk, a couple to die for, and a New York drag queen, Juliette Poe delivered something for everyone, hilarious, a little angst, a gorgeous romance all delivered with beautiful writing that will keep the reader invested from the very beginning.

“I mean, what’s not to like about the kind of man who shuts a woman up with his lips?”

From Ain’t He Precious we knew all about Lowe’s love affair with the old family residence, Mainer House. Now that the beloved property is in new hands Lowe is finding it hard to let go of the house and the history that goes hand in hand with it. Having been sentenced to hours and hours of labour to rectify the damage he had caused on his one man crusade, it isn’t long before he finds himself having to spend more and more time with his arch enemy, the new owner, Melinda Rothschild.

Melinda Rothschild is an extremely wealthy woman, but rather than the trust fund that her family has given her she loves to make her own money flipping houses and through her own well established interior design company. Mainer House is her most recent purchase and most would have been put off by the less than stellar welcome that she has been given, but Melinda is made of stronger stuff. Mainer House is more than just a flip though and as this book progresses I couldn’t help but love Melinda. Melinda is way more than the society rich girl that everyone assumes she is, she is just a normal woman trying to do something for herself. Yes, she could be hard headed, but only when needed and when she thought that someone was doing her wrong. Melinda was incredibly motivated, was a true and reliable friend and was just simply adorable.

Lowe was everything I expected and a whole lot more. Lowe was a hard worker, fiercely loyal and a good ole Southern momma’s boy. What I loved the most though was that he held his hands up when he realised he had made a mistake. The more and more time that he spent in Melinda’s company it was apparent that his first impressions were definitely the wrong ones.

“…I kiss a woman who I am pretty sure was brought into my life for a reason other than taking something away from me. I think I’m actually getting a lot more than I lost.”

These two sizzled on the pages, the chemistry was one that gobbles you up as you become invested in that initial game of push and pull. There is a fine line between love and hate and with these two their constant bickering was just the precursor or starter before the main course. The dialogue and banter as ever was on point and it is this that really injected that spark into the pages. The dialogue flowed with such honesty that I could picture myself in the little town of Whynot totally submersed with the secondary characters, the gossip and all the little businesses that kept this town thriving.

“I’m only here because Lowe is here, and I want to see him. End of story. Or beginning.”

Juliette Poe delivers a slow burn, cute, love/hate romance with fantastic secondary characters, family values, nosey neighbours in a stunning small town setting. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, everything you expect in a romance. This one ticked a lot of boxes and was a book I couldn’t put down once I had started. Loved it!

The second book in the series, though there are brief references to events in the first book, I feel this can be read as a standalone. Reading the series in order would probably add to the enjoyment, however.

An enemies to lovers story, both Mely and Lowe are interesting and intelligent characters, and I enjoyed the sweet, slow (in book terms, though not in time) build-up of their relationship. This book is full of great characters, in fact, and I mean characters in all senses of the word.

The small town setting was used well as part of the plot; the author cleverly used small town gossip to drive the plot in a way I hadn't seen before but very much enjoyed. I did find the crisis a little predictable, but the characters and stories are so light and funny, it didn't detract from the book for me at all.

If you're looking for down and dirty, this isn't the story for you (though I loved the passing reference to the Wicked Horse, btw!), but if you're looking for a very funny, sweet and fast read, this is a wonderfully well-written, fun story. 5 stars

I so wanted to give this more than 3 Stars. But I feel 3 Stars is fair. I really enjoyed Ain't He Precious. But this one missed the mark for me. I was highly disappointed in the lack of intimate moments. I was really looking forward to their first time. But unfortunately there was none. Just the fact that it "happened 3 times". I think it would have been highly appropriate after all the build up.

The story itself was really great. Another sweet read. I liked the premise. I loved the practical jokes. They actually made me laugh out loud. There was some drama but I'm so glad it was squashed quickly. Lowe was a great guy. A real gentleman. Mely was a bit childish. Though I loved the frustration they both gave each other (starts in Ain't He Precious). It really made the build up exciting.

I'm sadden that I didn't love this book. It was good. But it was just too PG-13 for me.

I’m so glad I dove straight into Stubborn as a Mule - book 2 in Juliette Poe’s Sex and Sweet Tea series - as I was so keen to read about Lowe and his feud with New Yorker Melinda. This is a fabulous slow burn romance that was realistic, sweet and sexy.

I loved seeing Lowe’s transformation from a stubborn man sad to lose a piece of family history, to an understanding soul who came to accept that perhaps losing a house meant gaining so much more. And that more was in the shape of one sassy, intelligent, sweet woman: Melinda - Mely - Rothschild. The chemistry between these two was plain to see from early on - even if they both denied it - and I loved watching their budding relationship blossom. They don’t have an easy time, but Lowe’s Southern gentlemanly manners and Mely’s cautious but willing to try anything attitude sure makes for an interesting story.

Yet again, it was the other inhabitants living in Whynot that totally won me over. I was thrilled that we got a couple of Paps POV chapters and I loved the gossip mill chapters - a fabulously realistic look into life in a small town and the way that gossip can both help and hinder interpersonal relations. And I have to mention Mely’s BFF Morrie D - what a breath of fresh air to bring this character into Whynot and prove that there is so much more to this town then it’s redneck, Bible Belt reputation. Plus the pranks between Morrie and Lowe had me laughing out loud with tears in my eyes (doughnut anyone? shower perhaps? 😂😂). Also, knowing a bit more about the Mancinkus parents in Gerry and Catherine was very much appreciated as well.

Stubborn as a Mule is another great small town romance that I’ll be sure to recommend. The history that was woven into this story proves that it’s more than just a simple tale of love and I came away with a little more knowledge about the history of the USA. And as someone who loves a book that teaches me something as well as gives me a swoon-worthy romance, I definitely loved this book!

Wow. I totally loved this book. I thought at first that Mely was really going to be hard to like, and I also was a little unsure about Lowe, what with his stubborn and hard-headed ways in the first book.

But once the story started and I got to know bother characters, I really loved them. The banter between them at the beginning was absolutely hilarious and I was grinning at my kindle like a mad woman.

Lowe and Mely both having a connection to the house is really cool, and oh man some of those Lowe moments made me swoon. Particularly a certain camping trip by the lake. Oh man, I'm a city girl with country at the heart, and oh yeah if that wasn't something I would've totally loved to do myself. Oh Lowe, can I have you?

Morri is a pretty cool character in this one too, and his moments with Lowe were so hilarious and then later as they got to know each other, they were heartwarming too. And seeing more of the towns people was cool too, particularly Floyd. I quite liked him by the end as well.

There were so many things in this book that made me laugh, like I said, grinning at my kindle like a mad woman over here, and this book was so much fun to read.

I really like that there's not a lot of angst in these books either. I could see coming a mile away what the issue was that caused the little bit of angst we did get, if you could even call it angst, but all in all this is a really fun and fast read.

Highly recommend, looking forward to the next one!
