The Summoner and the Seer: Darklight Universe: Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

He murdered her family, she sentenced him to eternal torture. Now they have to work together to save the world from the coming darkness.

Radcliff was widely known as the most ruthless wizard of all time. Nicknamed Destroyer, his brutal actions forced even the most recalcitrant kingdoms to surrender. When the west defied him, he immolated their entire city and thousands died. But this action was the last straw for many. Betrayed by his lover, stripped of power and memory by his mentor, he was locked up and tortured for one thousand years.

Amira’s seer talent has always been unpredictable but accurate. So when it shows her the wizard responsible for slaughtering her friends and family is the key to saving the world, she has no choice but to rescue him. But Radcliff is no longer who he was and certainly not what she expected. It isn’t long before she regrets her part in his sentencing.

Radcliff doesn’t know he’s the most reviled person in history. In fact, he doesn’t know anything because when he wakes up each morning, he forgets his past. A journal lets him relearn basic spells, but it can’t help him build a relationship, and he’d really like one with his beautiful traveling companion.

Together, they must evade their enemies and restore Radcliff’s memory before the world is consumed in darkness. But bringing back the Destroyer may not be wise. It may also break Amira’s heart.

This can be read as a standalone fantasy novel set in the Darklight universe.

After retiring from a career of torturing software (perks of a software tester), she could no longer hold back the flow of ideas demanding to be written. This also let her unleash new torments on unsuspecting characters, though they got even by doing things not in her outlines!

She favors writing about the broken, the unusual, and the shades of grey between right and wrong. Her worlds are influenced by her background in electrical engineering, physics, and computer science as well as her love of authors like Barbara Hambly, Janny Wurts, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Love, love, loved this book. The author put some thought into it. Too much fantasy nowadays is about who has the biggest baddest sword and/or dragon.. There is enough fighting to satisfy the sword play crowd, but this book has an intricate plot that left me several times thinking "Well I didn't see that coming." A pleasure to read.

I got the first few chapters through BookFunnel and was sucked in.

The characters in this story are compelling. I guess it’s high fantasy since this is very character driven. The evil is terrifying.

I often get “distracted” from the book between 30% and 60%. And sometimes I never get back to it. Or. It takes me a long time. But this book… I read till 5 am one morning and only stopped because I needed to get *some* sleep.

But. I had to finish. And I’m so glad I did.

Very good story. Thank you, C. Gold for telling this tale.

Seven years on and where is book two in the series?
This is a mostly good offering in sword and sorcery, but where is the next book? Naming it book one in a series implies an assurance there will be a second. Even the author's website indicates there will be another. Where is it?
Too late. I've waited long enough. I give up wanting the next in the series, or anything else from this author.

This fantasy story is my first from both the author and narrator . The author wrote a story that it looks like she thought out very well. It has it all Action , mystery . It’s an full story .
Hero is Radcliff. Heroine is Amira’s.

Radcliffe is a wizard that was wicked and evil. He had no feelings about destroying a whole country or village . Radcliff is punished for a thousand years . His mentor can’t take any more , so he does something to Radcliffe he takes away Radcliffe memory .

Amira is the seer . When the world is threatened, she sees that it will be destroyed, there is only one way to save earth , she doesn’t want to team up with Radcliffe since he killed her parents but what choice does she have.

Does Amira and Radcliffe team up , do they save earth , does Radcliffe regret anything

First time I listened to Ulf. He has a very smooth voice , his tome for the characters were great. His voice is strong

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review." I enjoyed this audiobook and the narrator was excellent. The plot began 1,000 years ago between the summoner (wizard) and the seer. The seer helped sentence the summoner to an immense length of time in a fortress of a cell. The summoner managed to escape, and he and the seer slowly begin to understand each other's views. I did question how so many people who saw the trial were still alive a millenium later. However, this tidbit did not reduce my listening pleasure.

Great debut novel! Complex but easy to follow if you pay attention. That probably doesn't make much sense but I can't explain it any better. With many fantasy novels. you can skip ahead and not really miss anything important. Not so with the Summoner and the Seer. Like a fine wine, it's better taken slowly and savored to capture the complex notes and flavors versus chugged where it goes down fast but is never memorable. I found it by accident and am extremely glad I did. While C.Gold doesn't mention him as one of her influences, there are echoes of Jim butcher's Codex Alera - different books, different premise , very different protagonist but they feel like third or fourth cousins so far (removed but vaguely related). Anyway, enough blathering, if you like fantasy, you should give it a try - chances are it won't disappoint!
