The Curse of the Winged Wight Kindle Edition
As the Dark Witch's most valued and gifted dressmaker, sixteen-year-old Rosanna Mapleven knows all there is to know about the finest silks, the best stitches, and the most flattering patterns.
What she doesn't know is how to evict the evil fairy that possesses her or how to stop seeing the ghostly apparitions of long-ago murdered girls.
But Rosanna must find a way to succeed in both areas; else she will die, and the Curse of the Winged Wight will never be broken.
Madeline Dyer's new young adult story, a gothic fairy tale inspired by Charles Perrault's "The Sleeping Beauty" (1697), is perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer, Robin McKinley, and Alethea Kontis.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you follow my blog you know I’m a huge fan of Madeline Dyer and her dystopian series, Untamed. When The Curse of the Winged Wight released I had to make time to read it.
Rosanna Mapleven is possessed by an evil fairy who speaks to her and shows her images she can’t banish from her mind. No one in town will come near her because of the curse she carries, no one but Felix who is pledged to marry her cousin on the birthday she shares with Rosanna. Can she break the curse in time to change the future, or is her destiny in a different direction? Will she find a place where she belongs or will she forever be an outcast.
The thing with fairy tales is that they hit us in the feels but only if we really think about them. We’ve all been that one who was closed out because something about us was different. Sure, maybe I wasn’t cursed by a dark fairy and shunned by society at large, but I know how it feels to want to belong. Fairy tales, old and new, help us see that we are not alone.
I loved this dark fairy tale, a new angle on an old story. As it unfolded I saw where it had grown from, and you will too. I promise you will enjoy this story. And, as a bonus, at the end Madeline lets us in on how she came about to write it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMadeline Dyer has become one of my go-to indie authors thanks to her work on the YA dystopian Untamed series. A lot of those threads are present here as well in the short story The Curse of the Winged Wight, a retelling of the fairy tale The Sleeping Beauty.
I must confess a certain ignorance when it comes to fairy tales and modern retellings. Even still, this story was easy to follow along with, and Dyer's present-tense, first-person writing style perfectly suited the narrative. Even as Dyer spreads her metaphorical wings, it's clear she hasn't strayed too far from her dystopian and gothic influences.
The Curse of the Winged Wight is an engrossing, entertaining read. If you're a fan of fairy tale retellings, Dyer's work, or you're just looking for something new to try, this is a highly recommended read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was not what I expected to read. It gives some viewpoints from both the good side and the dark side of a fairy tale. I don’t know the original story that inspired this but now I am interested in reading it.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2019Format: KindleWonderful descriptive language and absolutely hooked me in from the Prologue. It's a dark retelling of traditional fairytales that lives up to the genre perfectly. You will not guess the ending.
