The Girl He Used to Know: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 5,333 ratings

New York Times bestselling author of On the Island, Tracey Garvis Graves, presents the compelling, hopelessly romantic novel of unconditional love.

Annika Rose is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess.

Jonathan Hoffman joined the chess club and lost his first game—and his heart—to the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires her ability to be true to herself, quirks and all, and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. Jonathan and Annika bring out the best in each other, finding the confidence and courage within themselves to plan a future together. What follows is a tumultuous yet tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that forces them apart, shattering their connection and leaving them to navigate their lives alone.

Now, a decade later, fate reunites Annika and Jonathan in Chicago. She's living the life she wanted as a librarian. He's a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce and seeking a fresh start. The attraction and strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled, but until they confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart, their second chance will end before it truly begins.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Careful to balance the emotional and intellectual power between Annika and Jonathan, Graves creates a believable love affair in which Annika is not infantilized but rather fully realized as simply different. And her differences become her strengths when catastrophe strikes, compelling Annika to take the lead for the first time in her life. A heartwarming, neurodiverse love story. " - Kirkus

“Tracey Garvis-Graves has written a beautiful novel that goes far beyond the classic boy meets girl. Annika is a unique character who will stay with you long after the last page and the ending will have you cheering and reaching for a box of tissues at the same time. A true love story for the ages. -
Anita Hughes, author of California Summer

“On the surface, this book might appear to be a girl-meets-boy, girl-loses-boy, girl-gets-boy-back-years-later type of story. But dig a little and you'll find so much more. The girl in question is not your usual heroine: she's somewhere on the autism spectrum. And the boy isn't typical either--he's not trying to take advantage of her, he's trying to heal too. Both a touching love story and an interesting insight into life on the spectrum, I raced through this in a day and felt all the feels when life intervened in a way that might have kept them apart forever. I recommend it.” -
Catherine McKenzie, bestselling author of Hidden and The Good Liar

“This wonderful novel deals with life and love on the spectrum with captivating and heart-warming characters who will stay with you long after you’ve finished. Memorable, and remarkable, Tracey Garvis Graves has written another winner.” -
Kaira Rouda, bestselling author, Best Day Ever and What Comes Around

Good read!! Annika likes to keep to herself, avoids having friends, doesn’t like crowds, etc. It’s crazy how much I relate to her on these things. 😬

Sometimes a book slips through the cracks and it takes years to discover it, but I’m so glad I picked this one up on sale this week. Most of my book buddy’s had read it years before and gave it raving reviews so I was excited to get started, but also a little worried it might not live up to the hype. I’m happy to say, I’m jumping on the bandwagon that this book is a must read.

It centers around two students who first meet up in their senior year at the weekly chess game. Jonathan is instantly attracted to Annika in more ways than one. It is not the average college romance and the story is told in the current era with flashbacks to their university days together. Annika’s character felt so authentic and it was an eye opener to think like her and understanding her way of thinking and how she deals with certain situations and aspects of her life. It takes a phenomenal person to be patient to learn why Annika thinks the way she does and not hold it against her or take advantage of her, and Jonathan was that guy. He made my romantic heart so happy with the way he was with Annika. It’s sad to think that it should be this way at all times but unfortunately it’s not the case. I also loved how Annika learns of her diagnosis and finds an inner peace and comfort with it all. She had tremendous courage and growth throughout the book, especially towards the end. And that is my only gripe with this book, the ending. I didn’t get a full HEA feeling and I needed just a little more to definitely know everyone was going to be ok and be fulfilled. It might just be me needing it all wrapped up in a bow, but that’s how I like it. I now need to go back and see what other books from this author I’ve missed out on.

My Thoughts: The Girl He Used to Know takes the reader back and forth in time, between 2001, when Annika and Jonathan serendipitously reconnected, to 1991 when they were in college.

Annika’s social anxiety and other issues seemed to trigger the protective, nurturing aspects in Jonathan. But were they destined to fail back then? Can they sort through the issues and do better this time?

As Annika and Jonathan alternately tell their story, we learn more about them and the events that separated them in the past. Moving forward, with the help of a therapist for Annika, we come to understand her struggles and how she has worked to overcome them, and how the two of them have grown and changed.

August 2001 was a significant time period for them to reconnect, as something traumatic loomed on the horizon for them that would require all of their strength to overcome. An emotional ending kept me turning pages as I could not help but root for the two of them. 4.5 stars.

I had this book on my TBR since I started this account.

I fell in love with the cover but doubted if I was going to like it because of the reviews I read.

Now that I've finished it I regret not reading it sooner.

It is wonderful from beginning to end. The plot has left me wanting to read more about Annika and how she faces the world from her perspective.

Review : The end when we found out that Jonathan was in the South Tower on 9/11 got me a bit choked up. Although the story and Annika's autism should have been handled in a different way, the discovery of her autism wasn't a surprise to me and found it out around Chap. 10. Got my expectations too high.

The lead characters are inspirational and I recommend this to anyone that enjoys a book of substance. 5 stars! On the island by this author is an absolute favourite 5 star read of mine that I've read so many times I've worn out the words.
