The Room Next Door Paperback – January 20, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Written between 2006 and 2018, this collection features short stories (and other weird writing) that find the strange in the mundane, or make the normal seem peculiar.
A dusty night across a sleeping city. A hole in a wall. Rooms next door and days at the office gone long.
Encounter artificial intelligences on the run and cold zombie landscapes.
Meet strangers that look somehow familiar, or people you knew but long ago lost.
See small acts of defiance.
Feel existential terror.
And look deep into the magic eight-ball of your soul.

About the author

Nicolas Papaconstantinou is a podcaster and author. He is co-creator of the podcasts We Have Issues and 2 Grown Men, and the creator and curator (and a contributing author) to the writing website Elephant Words, which from 2007 to 2016 was a home for daily prose by around fifty writers (but only six at a time).
He usually writes odd short things. They are often funny when he's trying to scare you, and unsettling when he wants you to laugh, and some of them are excellent.
(He is also a father, husband and dog owner, which makes him the fifth most exceptional person in a house of five. But none of them wrote anything, so they don't get an author page.)

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like 49 little books all in one!
I wouldn't say i dislike reading, but i don't have the time for it. As a concept, reading is brilliant - It was a huge revolution in the mass public's understanding of media and literature, and a communication skill not seen in any other creature, allowing huge advances in science and technology and social and educational development. But why spend 20 hours reading Starship Troopers, when the film is only 2 hours, and way better. I mean, have you read that book? It doesn't have anywhere near as many explosions as the film.
Usually when i read a book, i get through a couple of chapters, then the book sits on my bedside cabinet for years. Even after moving house, I put the book on the bedside cabinet again, never get back into it. It's effort. And then you find yourself reading the same paragraph over and over, as it doesn't go in, because it is telling you what colour the murdered person's shoes were, and what items are poking out of their bag, and that could be a 1 second shot on screen. Come on.
Anyway, this is where The Room Next Door really shines. It is actually 49 tiny little books, but all inside one physical book. Genius. Each mini-book is only about 5 or 6 pages long. Some are even less! This is what people want. It's practical. "Oh, i might read a book before bed tonight", 5 minutes later, done. Easy. And i think, being so short, you'd struggle to make them into films. They'd be adverts, if anything. So there's not even a choice to make. You can't say, "Should i read The Shining, or watch it?" - always a no-brainer, Jack Nicholson is brilliant. You HAVE to just read the short stories. And they're great! Descriptive, but with purpose - not just adding words with the intent of bulking out the book (looking at you, Emily Bronte...). Entertaining, and accessible. Loads of things going on. You never know what the next story is going to do. It's exciting, gets to the point, and leaves you thinking. It's relatable, or not. There are 49 stories! Covers all ground.
Would highly recommend. You get your money's worth and then some. And you won't ever have to skip back to chapter 4 to try and remember what Gordon's mother's middle name was because that is relevant in chapter 17 when he discovers some old letters addressed to Sarah, and he's like, "That couldn't be...", and you're thinking, "Couldn't be who?! I read that part of the book 4 weeks ago. A lot has happened in my life since then."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written
It’s rhythmic like a disjointed song. Dark, beautiful and grotesque at the same time. It’s a bumpy ride described with a smooth voice. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of stories
Each short story takes you in a different direction and kept my interest the whole time. There is no chance to get bored with this book! Definitely worth a read especially if you are looking for something compact to enjoy that will keep you guessing and get you thinking. A really interesting read. I really enjoyed it. Well worth it. I don't usually get along well with short stories but I recommend this to anyone looking for a new book to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected tales
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. Now I'm half-way through these short stories and still don't! Each one is compact, surprising, stand-alone and intriguing, many are wacky or off-the-wall but all so far are provoking, putting you slightly off balance. Even familiar things are seen through new eyes or from an unfamiliar angle. The more I read, the more I want to read. These are truly 'tales of the unexpected'!
