About the author

Life is a complex mix of dark and light, funny and sad. Sometimes they happen at the same time. I write about people with all their quirks and foibles. My stories are salt and sour, bitter and sweet because life's like that. I enjoy creating characters readers can relate to and I love being creative with the narrative scheme. Expect deeply emotional storylines.
My first novel, Patterns of Our Lives is a family saga. From a pre-war, industrial town in Yorkshire to the post war peace of the Norfolk countryside this dual timeline book follows Audrey Freeman's search for the truth about her mother. It's essentially a story about love and the sacrifices people make in its name.
My second novel is the multi-layered Trobairitz the Storyteller. Trobairitz were 12th century female troubadours. They sang and told stories about romantic love, traditions, current affairs and the place of women in society. My 21st century Trobairitz is Weed, 42 year old truck driver. At an overnight truck stop deep in the heart of Languedoc she tells a story. Her themes are those of the original Trobairitz but these are the very subjects which cause problems in her personal life. Will Trobairitz-the Storyteller be able to separate fact from fiction in time to save her own love life?
My third novel, The Sandman and Mrs Carter is a psychological mystery. Wendy Carter was only nine years old when the Sandman came to help her sleep. When her marriage falters in her forties who can she turn to? Five named characters tell Wendy's story; she never speaks for herself but there's a mystery narrator who seems to know everything about everybody.
My fourth novel, A Measured Man is a romantic comedy set in Norfolk. Aubrey Tennant, a bachelor in his fifties is still looking for his ideal woman. The trouble is, he has exacting requirements. He relies on rehearsed questions to extract from potential candidates what he needs to know. When he meets Lisa Miller on his annual trip to Torquay, he doesn't know she's already buried two husbands.
Mick Alec idlelife is a perfect anagram of my author name. His first collection of darkly comic short stories features ordinary people in extraordinary situations. How many words do you know ending a.r.s.e.? There aren't many in the English language. Mick has taken six as inspiration for his stories with a twist. Parse, Sparse, Enhearse, Coarse, Unrehearse(d) and Hearse. The title of his collection? Arse(d) Ends. His second collection is Queer as Folk, stories with unexpected twists and surprise endings.
My only non-fiction book is People Who Hurt - abusers and codependents looking for answers. My memoir explores the breakdown of a dysfunctional relationship and how much I had to learn about narcissistic patterns of behaviour.
After living in Languedoc for nine years I returned to Norfolk where I live surrounded by beautiful countryside and wildlife.
I'm ageing faster than I used, but I've still got ambitions.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2017Memorizing psychological suspense story! This is just one of those books that after reading, one needs some time to digest, contemplate on the message, search for hidden meanings, and even read over a passage or two again. What was so great about this book? First, Author Celia Micklefield's writing is so engaging, so easy to read that it's akin to sitting in a peaceful meadow watching a river flow by. Second, the characters are so deeply real, so...human; they have their personality disorders, flaws, and desires, just like we do. Wendy, a woman who is sad and lonely because her sons have grown and have gone off to college, her mother is nutty, and her husband ignores her, creates her own private world for a time. "But she had her little secret. it made her feel warm inside and just a little bit naughty. . . . She had her own lovely world to live in. A place where there were no troubles. . . . She'd found her escape in the arms of her tender visitor who knew exactly how she liked to be touched. She had rediscovered the joys of afternoon delight on cool sheets with the window open and fresh air blowing over her skin." Every character here had a reason to be here, in Wendy's life. And every character had a yearning, whether it is to go from lonely and forgotten to recognition, from a dull routine to a new exciting life, from a loveless marriage to a secret lover, from seeing something we've become accustomed to suddenly changes in front of our eyes. We've all been there. And often when you arrive at the other side, you may realize it's not any different. "You like to have a purpose for everything. But everything changes. Nothing stays the same."
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading psychological suspense.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021The author's understanding and simpatico with human nature is the source of this novel's satisfaction. The relationships are intriguing, the plot-lines absorbing and the situations unusual. Written from five different perspectives gives the story an extra level of interest as characters are seen differently by different narrators. I think this would be a great novel for book club reading as the different personalities would inevitably create a lot of discussion. I will be looking for more books by Celia Micklefield.

5.0 out of 5 stars A uniquely written physiological, mysterious drama, to be absorbed in.
I liked the sound of reading a novel with five different view points. I thought it would be an interesting read and a great challenge for the author to create such a variation of characters. A phycological drama was also a great draw for a change of genre for me. I’m off to an opening start with a (Listen) and yes, I had to do that to follow the gist of the story in its first instance. But it soon becomes clear as Celia Micklefield sets up the intriguing, suspense of what may lie ahead with so many narrators to get to know. Written in first person view point thankfully Mrs Carter led the way I think, or did she? Was she really indisposed? Marcus is next up, takes over and tells me about the small village of Compton by setting a wonderful descriptive scene where the Carters live, who are well know by everyone, which could easily be related to. As the story unfolds, I’m enjoying the clever way the author lets Joan takeover to tell her story and so on with other well fleshed out individual characters with their realistic traits. It sort of brings this story to life, as you would imagine in any village. I felt for Wendy having to cope with loneliness after her sons left for college and her husband seeming distant. Without too many spoilers I urge you to read this absorbing tale written in quite a unique style for yourself to discover if Wendy finds a way out of the situation, she is in. If you are looking for an easy to read story to get your teeth into and enjoy the suspense of a physiological mysterious drama with many great characters, this could be just up your street.
