The Year I Met August Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 72 ratings

It was the summer before college and Murphy was ready to experience life, as any girl should. During an outing with her sister she meets August. He's older, and more experienced than she is.

She knew a relationship at this point was almost pointless. With an internship at the end of summer and then college in the fall. Her schedule was full.

Murphy told herself that she could walk away from August without any repercussions. If only her heart had listened.

Walking away at the end of the summer was difficult. But they agreed to keep in touch and see each other whenever possible. They still didn't put a label on their relationship.

Eventually August showed his true self. He was so ashamed, he hid his secret from her for as long as possible. Now that his secret was out, Murphy had no clue how to handle it.

Will she stay with him so they can deal with it together? Or will it be too much for her to take on?

This was so amazing that I cried a few tears through out the story . August and Murphy made a good couple and what ever they been through they seem to always get back together. Second chances don't come often for most people but the love that August and Murphy had was unconditional. Murphy made a decision that most women and young girls who get pregnant have to make because either they not ready to be a parent ,they don't have support or help from family/ spouse . Making the right choice to bring a child into the world is very hard . I commend the women to make scarifies to do so. I also was proud toward the end of the book at how long August was clean and wasn't on drugs . Addiction is hard to overcome what with the right help you can get through it . Amazing story ! I loved Gwen cool girl and best bff ever . Good job author

Murphy and August meet the summer after Murphy's high school graduation. It was essentially love at first sight for the two of them. Unfortunately, she is leaving in ten days to begin her medical internship, her heart set on becoming a doctor. Murphy and August struggle to keep their relationship going long distance but August is holding something back from Murphy about himself. Murphy finds out and of course ends her relationship with August. I won't tell you what the issue is, read the book. Can Murphy and August find their way back to each? Should they even try?

The story of Murphy and August hit close to home for me and I felt every emotion from the both of them. Relationships will not always be roses and sometimes you have to love someone through the situation they are in. Renea has written a book that will stay with me a long time.

OMG!!!. This is one of the best stories I have ever read. I bought the book this morning and I could not put it down until I finished it. The characters were people with real feelings and real faults in life. I have a grandson that has an addiction problem, so I could really relate to August. I totally appreciate this author' talent for writing a great story. I will continue to recommend and follow this author.

Overall I enjoyed the book. I love August. I love how he struggled and was open and caring as well. He was flawed and okay with that. I didn’t love Murphy so much. I didn’t like how when August said he wasn’t worthy of her she said nothing. I didn’t like how she was tough love about August but was lenient towards his sister for the same thing. She was hypocritical there on that end. She made decisions and didn’t think of anyone but herself in a lot of them. She was thinking she was perfect and that I took issue with. I think August helped balance her and bring her back down to reality.

The story overall is good. It is told more from Murphy’s POV but we do see August’s POV one or two times. I would have loved to see more of August POV. He was a good guy but lost. Murphy helped ground him. He was dealing with a lot and he was struggling with many things. You feel for him for he seems to have a lot on his shoulders. When he meets Murphy it is more surreal for him. He is kind, sweet and a gentlemen. In the ten days they spent together these two created a soulmate bond that when issues arose and they were apart they were still with each other. And issues did arise. Murphy went off to college and August was flawed. He was struggling and did some stupid things.

It was disheartening the way Murphy cut people out of her life and sadly August was almost one of them. We get a gap of five years where August is in a spiral from what he said and away from Murphy because she blocked him out. I would have liked to see those five years from his eyes and not just Murphy’s struggles because I think it would help understand him more and what he was going through and struggling. he was a forgiving and kind man and loved Murphy very much especially after she told him her decisions in those five years.

Murphy granted did grow in those five years and learn she isn’t as perfect as she thinks she is. She struggled as well but she did it with a lot of support and love. She does soften a lot over time and I would have been okay at the beginning with her if it wasn’t for her actions towards August when her sister was doing the same actions. That is where I had the issue.

The story was nicely paced and shows us what happens when tough decisions are made when you love someone and the fallout and consequences. A second change and patience story where when time is spent apart we grow and get stronger. Get the strength to be there for our loved ones no matter what even when they need to hit rock bottom and after the time apart Murphy was able to become this for August and this is what had me like her at the end. She became what August needed and found strength and neverending love to help him with his struggle. the story is heartbreaking at times but that heartbreak was necessary for both August and Murphy so they could get to the place they needed to to be good for each other. A nice but sometimes heartbreaking love story with a journey of finding oneself, growth and struggles before finding a happy ever after.

Murphy has it all together. She is headed to college to be the Doctor she should be, like her father. She's a total nerd and that is fine. She hasn't had a boyfriend. No time. However, like a handful of days before headed off, her whole world changes instantaneously. She met August. Too quickly, they fell in love and were all that before the ten days were up before she left for school. I didn't like August much. For five years older, he doesn't have things together enough for me. Also, not into drug use, so that was a killer. Anyway, secrets finally come out and then more secrets happen. Fast forward, secrets revealed again. Okay book, just not for me.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A down-to-earth romance

I feel awful giving a review when I didn't absolutely love a book. It had a solid story line, just not delivered greatly. Everything was coasted over. For me, not enough detail and not very organised.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable but predictable

There were a lot of things missing in this book. To start, I think it was maybe the pace that everything moved at and how the whole relationship starts in the space of 10 days, it was just too rushed and far too unrealistic. It was much more of a young infatuation rather than ‘love’ as no real connection between August and Murphy is developed or shown.
All the drama seemed to be predictable, and things happened for absolutely no reason or relevance, for example Gwen’s rape. Why was that a storyline? It seemed to just be mentioned and then forgotten about. The same with the death of August’s friend. If either one was discussed further and the effects of both these events shown, they would be useful plot points and explained things like August’s drug use because people would relate and learn about tough situations but to just be mentioned and then forgotten about makes them almost seem like they were added just for drama, which is not how they should be used.
Another weak plot point was Murphy’s family, they seemed very out of touch too and that was never explained really.
I think the main problem throughout the book was the lack of character development. All these things kept happening and it was never mentioned again or people acted in certain ways and there was no reason behind it. And because of this you felt no connection to any character, which meant that when things happened you didn’t really care.
Having said that, with a good edit I think this could be a good book, as long as some of the unnecessary drama is taken out, eg. Death of August’s friend and Gwen’s rape unless both are explored properly in a sensitive way.
