4.5 stars. Kara Sullivan and Ryan Thompson had that all consuming love once upon a time, about 10 years ago. It also ended on a dramatic note, leaving both parties wounded and walking away scarred (metaphorically). When Kara's best friend marries a groom whose long time childhood friend is Ryan, these two meet again. Kara is a romance author who is full of wit, charm and quips that had me laughing several times. She's stuck in a rut with severe writer's block, but it seems that being around Ryan channels her inner muse and gets the inspirational juices flowing again. Kara cannot stop the momentum and with a tight deadline around the corner, decides that she needs to continue to spend time around Ryan so she can finish the book. Never mind what he does to her heart and body and if she should even risk putting herself in that situation again. I loved the dynamic between these two. They are hilarious with how they quickly pick up on each other's banter and despite their resistance, they fall under each other's spell. Not to mention that Ryan has a way of looking at Kara like she is the most interesting and fascinating person on the planet. They both thought playing it safe and stable would be the way to go, but there's no denying they can't be any other way besides all in. Then there's the game changer moment where everything falls apart. I wasn't loving that particular angle because of how it portrays Ryan, but I still empathized with him because despite the colossally bad decision, he went in with his whole heart. What follows afterwards wound up being just right for the new stage to be set and the happiness they deserved. I couldn't put this book down and while I realize the game changing aspect isn't for everyone, I thought this hit all the checkboxes for angst, humor, chemistry, dialogue, surprises, fun secondary characters and character growth.

Never have I ever read a book where I did not care for the relationship, like I was actively rooting for the couple to end up with other people BUT I loved everything else about the book. I will say that I was not rooting for them to end up with other people until very close to the end. I was really liking Ryan (even though I knew there was something shady going on with him), the banter, and the second chance aspect of this book until we get to Ryan's secret. But like I said I did really like everything else about this book. I liked Kara as the heroine; there were so many times that she felt relatable and like a real person. I love that she is a romance author and I love that we got to see pages of her book as she was writing. I really enjoyed the premise, Duke the dog, there were so many relatable and laugh out loud moments. I honestly was hooked from the first page and was entertained throughout. I just think Kara deserved better lol. I loved the introduction of Liam and was so excited to see that he has a book. I had never read from this author before so I wasn't sure what to expect, but in the end it definitely hit all of my romance boxes. Sweet, swoony, steamy and funny.

The book was a good read that kept me captivated from the moment I picked it up, however I was able to guess ahead on different parts of the plot twists. The main two characters, Kara and Ryan, were entertaining to follow along throughout the book. I was not as impressed with some of the others though they were well written for their own parts in the story. It was fun while it lasted, but it is not a book for me that I would personally consider ever reading again. Still I would definitely recommend the book to those who enjoy rom-coms or those like me that hardly read them. Everyone needs a Duke. If you don't get it then what are you waiting for? Kara is a romance writer that enjoys experiencing love through the pages of the novels she writes as well as those that she reads. Maid of honor comes with duties heightened with the natural stress of the wedding being a week away then the deadline of her next novel is days after the wedding, but she hasn't written a single word. It wouldn't be a small world after all if her ex-boyfriend and first love wasn't didn't show up at the wedding party. Awkward. Tension. Stress. All the emotions come to the forefront for Kara. How is she going to handle the wedding with him around and the novel deadline? Will her love life expanded past the covers of novels? Will her novel get completed by the deadline?

Kara is maid-of-honor at her best friend's wedding when she learns at the pre-wedding dinner a groomsman is her ex-boyfriend from college, Ryan. Things did not end well then and this night is seeming to be the same way. Cristina, the bride, sets up Kara and Ryan the next night and things then start slowly changing especially when Ryan gets thrown out of his hotel room because of his dog's destruction on the room. He moves in to Kara's apartment and things really start changing until the wedding day. Kara then spends six months in Italy where she has time to sort her feelings and makes decisions for her future.

I liked this story. I liked Kara. Ryan needed a swift kick where the sun don't shine. I enjoyed Kara's trip to Italy where she met Liam who opened her eyes to what she wanted. I liked Kara's friends. Her mom needed to chill out. I am glad Kara made peace with her dad. Her advice to Ryan was good in regards to his dad. The snarkiness between Kara and Ryan was fun.

This is a good beach read. I did finish it in one day. It is that good!

I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting and I think I put it down twice for a food break. Literally obsessed...this book was like a warm hug on a rainy day let me tell ya.

The dialogue was some of my favourite i've read. It was funny, witty, flirty...I loved how the character's bounced off each other - I laughed out loud multiple times whilst reading lol.

Also, one of my fave things was all the bookish references - it was cool to read a book about a modern day writer where bookstagram and tropes exist. I felt I could really connect with Kara and it made the whole read really enjoyable. The way Kate wrote, it made you feel as though Kara was your best friend.

I found it to be really relatable as well with the relationship problems, but also with a healthy dose of love, romance and steam, too. What more could you want, really?

Go and read this book now, thank me later!
Kate Bromley's debut novel was amazing and I can't wait to read more of her books!
